(AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Supreme Court has turned down an appeal by a Mandan man who claims undisclosed DNA evidence would clear him of manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-130 Component-p-0-2-121\">Rodney Friesz, 56, was convicted of manslaughter and arson in 2016, but acquitted of murder in the death of Eugene Jassmann. Friesz claimed he shot the 62-year-old victim in self-defense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-130 Component-p-0-2-121\">Friesz shot Jassmann in 2014 and set fire to his brother\u2019s mobile home to conceal evidence, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-130 Component-p-0-2-121\">In May 2020, Friesz appealed his conviction citing insufficient evidence, ineffective counsel, failure of the court to suppress certain evidence, and the prosecution\u2019s failure to disclose DNA evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-130 Component-p-0-2-121\">The justices in affirming a lower court decision said Friesz \u201cfailed to meet his minimal burden to provide at least some competent evidence to support his claims,\u201d the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/state-supreme-court-upholds-manslaughter-arson-convictions-in-mandan-case\/article_774a84a2-d140-58d4-8866-4c72ca5e1472.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bismarck Tribune<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BISMARCK, N.D.
