News Aug 21, 2012) \u2014 A Jamestown man on trial for murder in the death of a Somali immigrant says he hit the victim and knocked him to the ground, but denied stabbing him.<\/p>\n<p>35-year-old Leron Howard testified Tuesday that he struck 18-year-old Abdi Ali Ahmed twice during an argument between Ahmed and Janelle Cave on April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Howard said an altercation between Cave and Ahmed started in a trailer home Cave shared with Howard and Alexa Stoller, over money owed by Ahmed for drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Howard stepped between Cave and Ahmed and struck Ahmed when Howard thought Ahmed was going to strike Cave.<\/p>\n<p>Cave earlier testified that she never witnessed Howard hit Ahmed, and that it was Howard who stabbed Ahmed along a rural roadside.<\/p>\n<p>Howard said Cave stabbed Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>A medical examiner earlier testified that Ahmed likely died because of blunt force trauma to the head, and that the stab wounds to the abdomen accelerated the death.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed\u2019s body was found around noon on April 30, 2011, in a road ditch near Spiritwood.<\/p>\n<p>Howard testified Tuesday that he did not know Ahmed was dead until Howard was booked into the Stutsman County Jail, that evening.<\/p>\n<p>Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of Ahmed, whose body was found in a ditch near Spiritwood.<\/p>\n<p>Cave was earlier convicted of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy and is serving an 11-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday \u00a0afternoon the prosecution and defense rested, and presented closing arguments.<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorney Steve Mottinger asked the jury to find Howard guilty on a lesser charge of manslaughter, saying Howard did not intentionally kill Ahmed,\u00a0and that \u00a0Howard admitted to hitting Ahmed in the head twice, and kicking him.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In his closing arguments, prosecutor, Stutsman County State\u2019s Attorney, Fritz Fremgen said,\u00a0 Leron Howard and Janelle Cave\u00a0 want to distance themselves from the stabbing as it shows intent to harm Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>The jury\u00a0 begins deliberation\u00a0 Wednesday morning<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Click below for trial recap.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/2012\/08\/20\/recapping-leron-howard-trial-proceedings\/\">http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/2012\/08\/20\/recapping-leron-howard-trial-proceedings\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V News Aug 21, 2012) \u00a0 \u2013\u00a0\u00a0 Valley City police is seeking information on park vandalisms, and is increasing patrols.<\/p>\n<p>Reports\u00a0of vandalism, fires, and other\u00a0incidnt reports\u00a0have\u00a0recently increased\u00a0at Chautauqua and City Parks.<\/p>\n<p>Incidents include\u00a0graffiti on\u00a0park equipment, and \u00a0a city-owned dumpster and garbage can at Chautauqua Park were set on fire, along with\u00a0 reports of drinking and possible drug activity, which have likely occurred at night, when the parks are off limits.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Police are increasing park patrols.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone seeing suspecious activity should call Valley City Police at 845-3110.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) \u2014 The Jamestown City Council\u2019s Finance &amp; Legal Committee, Building, planning &amp; Zoning Committee, and Civic Center &amp; Promotion Committee met Tuesday Evening (Aug 21, 2012) at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Council Member Gumke was not present.<\/p>\n<p>With Finance &amp; Legal Committee Business:<\/p>\n<p>A motion was made and seconded to table the offer from Tim Dabill to purchase Lots 1 &amp; 2, Block 2, Beverly Hills 6th Addition, and Lots 18 &amp; 19, Beverly Hills 3rd Addition, in the amount of $6,000, subject to the buyer paying for all costs of surveying and approval of a re-plat prior to deed transfer.\u00a0 Dabill was not present at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Approved was the request from the Corner Bar for a permit to close the east end of 2nd St West and to dispense alcoholic beverages on September 15, 2012, from 10:00AM to 2:00AM, September 16, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Informational: Monthly departmental and financial reports, were presented.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>At the Building, Planning &amp; Zoning Committee meeting:<\/p>\n<p>Planning Commission minutes of August 13, 2012, were presented.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A Public Input Meeting was held to receive public comments regarding Section 8, of Appendix B of the City Code relative to subdivision development improvements and suggested changes.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Chairman, Dan Buchanan outlined guidelines for speaking at the meeting, including a three minute oral presentation, followed by two minutes for the committee response.<\/p>\n<p>Comments would only be taken on the subject at hand.<\/p>\n<p>He added that written comments to supplement oral comments may be submitted to City\u00a0Administrator Jeff Fuchs by 5-p.m., on August 31, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mark Goehner, representing Eddy Funeral Home and Marjo, Inc., spoke of changes needed, concerning costs to developers, and installation of infrastructure issues.<\/p>\n<p>He said he has worked with Jordahl developers from Fargo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clarice Liechty asked what the City Council has been doing to address reviewing and any changes to the city Ordinance, and to look at what other cities are doing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Corey Bayer said he has not developed new properties.<\/p>\n<p>He said Jamestown could look at ways to stretch developers dollars over a period of time, to make projects more cost effective.<\/p>\n<p>The committee asked for general comments from those in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Candice Dempsey, of Reuben Liechty Realty, said the climate for housing in Jamestown is stagnant.<\/p>\n<p>She added a need for condominiums in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>Families new to Jamestown in some cases are struggling to find a home to buy in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dave Hillerud, of Hillerud Construction also suggested seeing what other cities are doing with their Ordinances, concerning development.<\/p>\n<p>He asked what kind of timeline the city has to make changes.<\/p>\n<p>City Attorney Ken Dalsted it takes couple of months to affect an Ordinance change based on a consensus by the City Council, in addition to any recommendations by the City Planning Commission.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Andersen said the city has copies of Ordinances from North Dakota cities of similar size to Jamestown, that will be reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>City Administrator Jeff Fuchs added, currently the developer is responsible for the costs of installing water and sewer lines, road grading and graveling, curb and gutter, and paving.<\/p>\n<p>Paying Special Assessments is the responsibility of the developer until the property is sold.<\/p>\n<p>Other business following the input meeting:<\/p>\n<p>Informational: A Public Hearing and Second Reading of an ordinance to annex all of Titan Addition excepting therefrom all that portion previously annexed as described in the City Resolution recorded as Document #X32323, all within the NE\u00bc of Section 4, Township 139 North, Range 64 West, Stutsman County, North Dakota, is scheduled for the September 4, 2012, City Council Agenda.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Civic Center &amp; Promotion Committee:<\/p>\n<p>No items at this time.<\/p>\n<p>It was noted that a firm has inspected the Civic Center boilers, with some repairs made, and testing is underway.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was shown live on CSi Cable 67, followed by Replays.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) \u2014 The Barnes County Municipal Airport in Valley City is hosting the &#8220;Wings &amp; Wheels Airshow,&#8221; <strong>Saturday September 8, 2012.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On The Wayne Byers Show, on CSi Cable 2, Airshow Co-Director, Lori Jury said in addition to aerobatic entertainment, the event will feature the Bridge City Cruisers Classic Car Show &amp; Shine.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be military and static aircraft displays, plus, and evening outdoor bbq dinner served.<\/p>\n<p>Plans include a fireworks display, and entertainment by the band &#8220;Past Due.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On site concessions will also be available.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a &#8220;Night Air Show,&#8221; beginning that evening at 9:30.<\/p>\n<p>The airshow is being dedicated to the memory of local aviators Larry Lindemann and Bob Beyer.<\/p>\n<p>Lindemann served as the manager of the Barnes County Municipal Airport for 27 years from 1985-2012. He passed away March 17, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Beyer was appointed to the Barnes County Municipal Airport Authority in 1976, serving as chairman for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>He retired in 2009, and passed away in 2011. News) &#8212; The Jamestown Public School Board Monday (Aug 20, 2012) considered how to keep students in the school district.<\/p>\n<p>It was noted that seven students or their parents have decided to leave the school district, on kindergarten student, one in sixth grade, two freshman, two sophmores and one junior.<\/p>\n<p>Requested to be allowed to move to the Pingree-Buchanan school district.<\/p>\n<p>Considering each request separately, the board voted 6-1, for approving the no cost tuition for the seven students.<\/p>\n<p>Roger Haut, Greg Allen, Shelly Jystad, Heidi Larson, Terry Anderson and Roy Musland were in favor with Gail Martin opposed. Board members Tanya Ostlie and Diane Hanson were absent.<\/p>\n<p>About $4,000 in foundation aid payments go from the state to the other school district.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown School Superintendent, Robert Toso said the school district has sent out a letter to everyone who has left Jamestown Public Schools requesting reasons for leaving. (AP) &#8211; Investigators say a house fire in which<br \/>\na retired Grand Forks attorney died started on the kitchen stove<br \/>\nand spread to nearby combustibles and the kitchen cabinets.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eighty-six-year-old Fred Arnason died Aug. 14. He was a former<br \/>\nassistant Grand Forks County prosecutor who later started a private<br \/>\nlaw practice.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Grand Forks fire officials have ruled the fire accidental.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MAPLETON, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities have arrested a teenage boy in<br \/>\nthe armed robbery of a gas station in the southeastern North Dakota<br \/>\ntown of Mapleton.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The robbery at Gordy&#8217;s Travel Plaza was reported about 6 p.m.<br \/>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The Cass County Sheriff&#8217;s Office says the 17-year-old suspect was stopped about a half hour later on Interstate 29 in the Fargo area and arrested without incident.<br \/>\nAuthorities say items found in the boy&#8217;s car including a shotgun and cash link him to the holdup.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No one was injured in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Several thousand property owners in North<br \/>\nDakota&#8217;s largest city could fall under federal flood insurance<br \/>\nrequirements based on a preliminary new flood plain map for Fargo.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About 500 structures are affected by the current flood plain.<br \/>\nUnder the Federal Emergency Management Agency&#8217;s proposed update, at<br \/>\nleast 2,300 properties will be required to have flood insurance.<br \/>\nAnd city engineer April Walker says as many as 5,000 more within 25<br \/>\nfeet of the new flood plain also might have to have it, depending<br \/>\non mortgage lender requirements.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officials from Fargo, FEMA and the National Flood Insurance<br \/>\nProgram have scheduled public meetings for Sept. 11 and 12.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Permanent flood protection projects in the Fargo area could make<br \/>\nthe flood insurance issue moot for many homeowners, but those<br \/>\nprojects are not yet finalized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. Campbell announces that Alex Jackson, Brandon Edwards, Liam Kautz, Antonio Rivera, Joshua Claymore and Dalton Barrie all signed Letters of Intent to enroll at Jamestown College next year and compete in wrestling for the Jimmies.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson will wrestle at 141 pounds. A graduate of Hobbs High School in Hobbs, N.M., he was a two time state finalist at 140 pounds (second place in 2010 and 2011).<\/p>\n<p>Edwards will wrestle at 133 pounds. A graduate of Missoula Sentinel High School in Missoula, Mont., he was a two time state finalist at 130 pounds (fifth in 2011 and third in 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Kautz will wrestle at 133 pounds. A graduate of Southeast High School in Torrington, Wyo., he placed sixth at state at 130 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera will wrestle at 174 pounds.
