News) &#8212; The Jamestown Regional Medical Center, Wellness Center, located at Legacy Center, at the Former Jamestown Hospital location, downtown, will close today (Tues. Aug 27, 2013) at 1-p.m., due to having no air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>The Wellness Center will reopen on Wednesday August 28, 2013, at 5:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 26, 2013) \u2013 Jamestown Public School\u2019s Superintendent Robert Lech, is informing all parents and staff that public schools will be dismissing at 1:00 p.m. for the remainder of the week, from Tuesday August 27 \u2013 Friday, August 30th, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>He says, &#8220;While this is certainly an unusual occurrence, as we assessed our facilities through the course of today and factored in the forecasted heat index, we believe that it is in the best interest of our students and the educational environment to operate on the shortened schedule for the duration of this week. Understand that while some of our schools do have full or partial air-conditioning, it was not feasible to make a school closure decision on a school-by-school basis. Please be aware that, if the weather does improve and allow for a full day of instruction, we will notify you through the calling system. Our staff will utilize this additional time for teaming time and other professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, The open house at Jamestown Middle School, &#8220;What\u2019s Poppin\u2019 at JMS?&#8221;, originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, 2013 has been postponed to Tuesday, September 10, 7:00-8:00 pm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>St. John\u2019s Academy<\/p>\n<p>Principal Mark Wiest says St. John\u2019s Academy in Jamestown has decided that it will dismiss school at 1-p.m., the rest of the week, due to excessive heat in the school buildings from unseasonably hot temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,<\/p>\n<p>Valley City public Schools Superintendent Dean Koppelman has canceled the opening day of school set for Wednesday, August 28, 2013, due to the excessive heat this week. Koppelman says a number of buildings in the Valley City school district do not have air conditioning. On Thursday and Friday this week, Valley City Public Schools will start at the regular times.<\/p>\n<p>Dismissals Thursday and Friday this week will be at 1:10 p.m., for Valley City Public elementary schools both days, and at 1:30 -p.m. for the junior and senior high.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 26, 2013) \u2013 Interstate Engineering reports that residents and motorists are advised that the closure on Highway 20 at the intersection with 2nd Ave NE will be extended and is expected to reopen later this week. News Aug 26, 2013) &#8212; The Jamestown\/Stutsman Development Corporporation (JSDC) is considering two vendors to develop a new strategic plan.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals from Strategic Plan ND of Jamestown, and KLJ were forwarded to the full JSDC Board for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Th board Monday approved $10,000 for a flex pace interest buydown for Reister Meats, of Streeter.<\/p>\n<p>The loan will reduce interest rates on an expansion planned by Reister financed by the Bank of Streeter.<\/p>\n<p>The board went into closed-door executive session.<\/p>\n<p>meeting with representatives from Kost Materials about the purchase of land in the Bloom Industrial Park for a gravel and ready mix cement operation.<\/p>\n<p>The board in closed session also discussed information about an undisclosed business possibly considering locating in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. Aug 26, 2013) &#8212; Pending approval of their boards, CHS Inc., and Dakota Plains Cooperative, in Valley City-based agribusiness, would merge.<\/p>\n<p>The longtime business partners, have been affiliated with each other for more than 80 years.<\/p>\n<p>CHS, Inc., based in St. Paul, Minnesota plans to build a $1.5 billion nitrogen fertilizer plant in Spiritwood Energy Park in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>The merger would not slow down any progress on the fertilizer plant.<\/p>\n<p>The merger has to be approved by Dakota Plains\u2019 members and CHS\u2019 board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. August 26, 2013) &#8212; The Jamestown City Council held the second budget meeting for the 2014 calendar year, Monday afternoon at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Council Member Gumke was not present.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Andersen said the budget is scheduled for the First Reading at the September 3, 2013 City Council meeting. At that time the budget figures may be reduced but not increased.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of the meeting:<\/p>\n<p>First Monday, the City Fire Department request was approved for the 2014 budget, for over $500,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Police Department\u2019s requests for an unmarked, marked patrol cars, body cameras on officers, and computer desks, and five computers for patrol units, due to the software becoming obsolete, were approved. Mayor Andersen said she was not in favor of another marked patrol unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Council voted unanimously to approve the budget.<\/p>\n<p>The Finance and Assessment budget was approved.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering, approved was storm water structure modifications, as was Schools and Conventions.<\/p>\n<p>Removal of trees at the James River, (around 1,000 trees are estimated to be removed) was not currently budgeted for, nor was infrastructure planning services, or a portion of consulting engineering services.<\/p>\n<p>Those items may be budgeted for individually as need from other budget areas, or from sales tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Civic Center, expenses, items moved to Convention and Promotion fund from the Sales Tax Fund, was approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Street Department, railroad crossing signal control changes was not specifically budgeted for, at this time. Other items in the budget except for the band saw was approved.<\/p>\n<p>Equipment replacment and vehicle depreciation funds were approved.<\/p>\n<p>The Visitors Capital Construction fund items as submitted were approved.<\/p>\n<p>Public Building Site Fund, had the Civic Center grass seeding replacement costs, was added for approval.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Andersen said another budget meeting will be held for Utilities, at the September City Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>The budget meeting then turned to hearing other budget requests.<\/p>\n<p>City Beautification Committee, request of $7,500 was approved. Chairperson, Kathy Larson outlined projects accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>The Community Service budget was approved, with the city\u2019s share at $12,500.<\/p>\n<p>The Fine Arts Association budget was at $5,000. Arts Center Director Taylor Barnes said the dollars are matched by the North Dakota Council on the Arts with grant requests. She noted the Arts Center is applying to Arts Midwest for funding for the Arts Park.<\/p>\n<p>She presented information on how the Arts Center has served the community.<\/p>\n<p>Victim Witness Advocates, request was approved at $6,000.<\/p>\n<p>Buffalo City Tourism Foundation request was approved at $323,320 in conjunction with the Enterprise agreement between the city and tourism. The Mayor asked the BCTF for an outline of goals the Foundation is working on.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was shown live on CSi 67.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. Aug 26, 20-13) &#8212; The United Way kick-off event is an Adult Prom on Sept. 27, 2013 at the Gladstone Inn starting at 7:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>A social, is at 7:00 then dinner at 7:30 and 8:30 is the grand march of the agencies.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, this year\u2019s United Way President, Lynette Stoddart said he agencies will compete for King and Queen of the prom by displaying the way in which the United Way contributes to their particular agency.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets to attend are $25 a piece and can be purchased from any United Way board member or at Gate City Bank, also feel free to call us at 952-8929 that\u2019s 952-8929 or check out their facebook page to get tickets that way.<\/p>\n<p>The ticket includes a meal and entertainment, which is provided by R &amp; C School of Rock DJ services, who are also donating their time and services.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors are ETC salon and Tia Tanning,<\/p>\n<p>A cash bar will be set up in the ballroom courtesy of Andrea at the Gladstone, donating the space for the event.<\/p>\n<p>You must be 21 years old to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday\u2019s show United Way Campaign Chairperson Megan Aldinger said<\/p>\n<p>The United Way Campaign Goal for 2013-2014 goal is $200,000. She pointed out that the ambitious goal last year was met and the Jamestown community &#8220;has been incredible over the last few years, and we believe that support will continue. The Jamestown community has a greater need for services, which is the reason that we had to raise the campaign goals to help meet the needs for the services in Jamestown. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Stutsman County United Way currently helps to fund 22 agencies some of which include: Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, Boy &amp; Girl Scouts, Camp Rokiwan, Safe Shelter, RSVP, James River Family YMCA, Arts After School which is a program for children within the Jamestown Fine Arts Association, and Consumer Credit Counseling.<\/p>\n<p>She said that 99% of the money donated to the United Way stays here in Jamestown and Stutsman County.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Stoddart add the United Way Board consists of an 18 member Board of Directors. This year our President is Lynette Stoddart, 1st Vice President, Carla Edinger, 2nd Vice President, Megan Aldinger, Treasurer, Shane Ede, and Secretary\/Publicity, Jessica Haak. You can serve two consecutive three year terms and then you are required to sit out, so we are always looking for new board members who bring new ideas and energy to the board.<\/p>\n<p>The United Way theme this year, is &#8220;Rockin\u2019 the United Way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming events have also been planned in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Those include a bake sale at the buffalo mall a bowling tournament, as the BIGGEST donations come from the business and workers in the community, with pledge packets be distributed in September.<\/p>\n<p>Also, is on Facebook at United Way of Stutsman County with updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Undated (KCSi-T.V. (AP) &#8211; A Fargo woman acknowledges she beat her boyfriend unconscious with a boot after he and his friends disturbed her sleep.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 36-year-old Bonnie Kay Hanson pleaded guilty Monday to one count of misdemeanor A preventing arrest.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She was sentenced in Cass County court to just under a year of unsupervised probation.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court records say Hanson called police April 21 to say that her boyfriend, Andrew Vivier, had broken into her home and put a knife to her neck. Hanson later changed her story and told police she had yelled at him for making noise with his friends while she was trying to sleep.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The records say she grabbed a boot from Vivier and hit him in the head several times, knocking him unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Texas man will serve 11 years in prison for his part in a bank robbery in the western North Dakota town of New England.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Federal prosecutors say 29-year-old Johnner Ward Jr., of Abilene, Texas, was sentenced Monday to four years for bank robbery. After that term, he&#8217;ll serve seven years for use and carry of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He pleaded guilty to both counts and also has to pay more than $4,200 in restitution and fees.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say two men wearing black ski masks and carrying guns entered American Bank Center in New England on Oct. 28 and ran away after grabbing money from a bank employee.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jurors convicted 19-year-old Colt Schneider, of Rapid City, S.D., last week for his role.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities say a man driving a box truck veered off a Fargo street and struck a fence and electrical pole before running over the top of four vehicles. The accident happened about 9 a.m. yesterday on Main Avenue in the western part of the city. Eight parked cars were either wrecked or destroyed in the accident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; An officer is back at work a day after he was stabbed by an inmate at the North Dakota State Penitentiary who&#8217;s serving life in prison for murder.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It happened around 6 p.m. Sunday in the segregation unit.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Highway Patrol Capt. Kyle Kirchmeier, who&#8217;s investigating, says that when the officer approached a cell door, the inmate pushed the door open, knocked the officer to the ground and jumped on top and assaulted him.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He says the inmate used a homemade metal shank as a weapon.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The officer&#8217;s name wasn&#8217;t released. He was able to get away but did suffer wounds that required treatment at a hospital.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kirchmeier says the inmate was 43-year-old John Bridges.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once the investigation is done, the Burleigh County prosecutor will decide on charges.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The hot weather is helping some North Dakota crops mature but also putting stress on row crops.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The U.S. Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that rain is needed soon over much of the state to help crop development.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The spring wheat harvest, durum wheat harvest and oat harvest are all well behind average and where those crops were at this time last year.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Other crops behind average and what had been harvested last year include barley, canola, flaxseed and lentils.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sunflower blooming is at 88 percent, which is behind last year and average.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The second cutting of alfalfa hay was 90 percent complete last week, with most of it in good or excellent condition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The last airplane is set to depart the North Dakota Air National Guard base in Fargo, after more than 65 years of flying missions.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 119th Wing that was founded in 1947 has made the move to unmanned aircraft systems after flying fighter jets for 50 years and most recently transport planes.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The airmen for the unit have been known as the Happy Hooligans since the 1950s. Three of Hooligans in F-16 fighter planes patrolled the skies over Washington D.C. after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The last F-16 was flown from Fargo to McChord Air Force Base Museum near Tacoma, Wash., in December 2006, when the base switched to the C-21 Learjet.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The lone remaining C-21 is scheduled to leave the Fargo base about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D.
