News Aug 22, 2012) \u2014 A Southeast District Court Jury, of eight women and four men, in Jamestown Wednesday began deliberation in the trial of Leron Howard.<\/p>\n<p>Not reaching a verdict Wednesday, the jurors recessed just before 5-p.m., and will continue deliberations, on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed on April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Howard\u2019s court appointed defense attorney, Steve Mottinger, asked the jury to convict Howard of manslaughter during closing arguments.<\/p>\n<p>If they find Howard not guilty of murder they would then consider the lesser included charge of manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>Abdi Ali Ahmed\u2019s body was found in a road ditch near Spiritwood, on April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>An autopsy revealed\u00a0Ahmed died of blunt force trauma to the head and he was also stabbed twice in the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>On the stand Tuesday, Howard admitted to striking Ahmed twice during an altercation during the early morning hours of April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Murder and criminal conspiracy are Class AA felonies punishable by life in prison without parole.<\/p>\n<p>Manslaughter is a Class B felony punishable by 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>Jury selection in the case began August 14, 2012 with testimony beginning on August 15, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Closing arguments were heard in the case Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The co-defendant on the case, Janelle Cave of Jamestown was found guilty, in a jury trial in Jamestown, in February of 2012, of manslaughter, and conspiracy, in the death of Ahmed.<\/p>\n<p>She is appealing her conviction in the North Dakota Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Click link below for trial proceedings, recap<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/2012\/08\/20\/recapping-leron-howard-trial-proceedings\/\">http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/2012\/08\/20\/recapping-leron-howard-trial-proceedings\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Report From North Dakota Highway Patrol, Captain Niewind<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi T.V. News)\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0 On August 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, 2012 at approximately 4:45 pm, a NDHP Trooper located a reported reckless driver traveling eastbound on I-94.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The vehicle was a silver, 1999 Hyundai Sonnata, which was reported by other motorists as traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving on the road way from the ditch to the median of the eastbound roadway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When located by the trooper, the vehicle was traveling 95 mph and weaving across the entire roadway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trooper followed the reckless driver with emergency lights activated for approximately 6 miles (from MM 327 to MM 333), at which time the driver and lone occupant of the was involved in a crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The vehicle left the roadway and entered the south ditch of I-94 crossing through a wire fence and striking a guardrail on the frontage road that runs parallel to I-94 near MM 333.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The vehicle came to rest in the south ditch facing south.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and narcotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The driver, 39 year old Karen Goodall, from Jamestown, ND, was transported to Essentia Hospital for minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Ms. Goodall was arrested on scene for Driving Under the Influence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other pending charges include:\u00a0 Driving Under Revocation, Possession of Marijuana and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. (AP) &#8211; A former female teacher in the southwest<br \/>\nNorth Dakota town of Hebron is on trial for alleged sex crimes<br \/>\ninvolving male students.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jennifer Schultz has pleaded not guilty to felony sexual assault<br \/>\nand two misdemeanors &#8211; corrupting minors and giving them alcohol.<br \/>\nAuthorities allege that she drank vodka with four boys in her home<br \/>\nin October 2011, had sex with one of them and groped another.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The boys were between 16 and 18 years of age. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota&#8217;s two largest universities set<br \/>\nenrollment records during the first day of fall semester classes.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota State in Fargo had 14,319 students enrolled<br \/>\nTuesday, an increase of about half a percent over the year.<\/p>\n<p>The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks had 14,807 students, up<br \/>\nabout 5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The official fall enrollment won&#8217;t be tallied at either<br \/>\nuniversity until the fourth week of classes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota lawmakers are supporting big<br \/>\nincreases in some of the state&#8217;s highway speeding fines.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota has some of the region&#8217;s lowest fines for speeders.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re also hard for law officers to calculate without using a<br \/>\nchart.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Legislature&#8217;s Transportation Committee on Wednesday endorsed<br \/>\nraising the fines and making them easier to figure.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now, someone who&#8217;s caught driving 65 mph on a 55 mph road is<br \/>\nfined $10. Under the new bill, the fine would be $50.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Someone going 80 mph on North Dakota&#8217;s interstate highways would<br \/>\nbe fined $50, instead of $25.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The bill would also allow cities to increase their speeding<br \/>\npenalties.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fargo state Rep. Ed Gruchalla and assistant West Fargo police<br \/>\nchief Mike Reitan say the higher fines will be a deterrent to<br \/>\nhighway leadfoots.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Dakotas-based Sanford Health is offering $15,000 bonuses to recruit registered nurses in Fargo to address a shortage of experienced nurses.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The bonuses are for nurses who have at least two years of experience and commit to stay at least three years.<\/p>\n<p>Sanford says the unusual incentive has helped recruit about two dozen nurses.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carla Hansen, Sanford&#8217;s chief nursing executive in Fargo, says the hospital is seeing more patients, and that experienced nurses are needed more because of the increasingly sophisticated technology used in health care.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In sports&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; University of North Dakota athletic<br \/>\ndirector Brian Faison (FAY&#8217;-zawn) has received a two-year contract<br \/>\nextension.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 School officials say Faison is signed through June 2017. Terms<br \/>\nof the deal were not announced.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This year is Faison&#8217;s fifth at the helm of UND athletics.<\/p>\n<p>He has led the school through the transition to the NCAA Division I level,<br \/>\nwhich included entrance into the Big Sky Conference.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the<br \/>\npresident for four years and athletic director for five years at<br \/>\nNew Mexico State University.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Faison is UND&#8217;s 15th athletic director.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A judge in Grand Forks has thrown out<br \/>\nthe last felony charges stemming from an investigation into<br \/>\nsuspected steroid possession by three former University of North<br \/>\nDakota football players.<br \/>\nJudge Joel Medd on Monday dismissed charges against 23-year-old<br \/>\nJustin Belotti, who finished his senior season last fall.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two other players also were accused of possessing steroids and<br \/>\namphetamines.
