The spread of the smoke, which contains particles called aerosols, has prompted concerns over the impact of poor air quality on respiratory and cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/canadafires_goes_2023135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/canadafires_goes_2023135.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-272362\" width=\"720\" height=\"481\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The fires have burned about&nbsp;478,000 hectares, or 1,800 square miles, across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan as of Monday \u2014 10 times the average area burned for this time of year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/151346\/smoke-fills-north-american-skies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;the NASA Earth Observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were&nbsp;nearly 90 fires&nbsp;burning in the province of Alberta, a quarter of which are expected to get larger,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca\/report\/graphs#gr1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. More than 20,000 people have had to evacuate their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fires have had a notable impact on the region\u2019s oil industry, as some drillers were forced to halt a small percentage of production in a precautionary measure due to shifting fire conditions. This week, benchmark Canadian heavy crude prices<a href=\"https:\/\/energynow.ca\/2023\/05\/western-canada-heavy-oil-differential-narrows-on-worries-about-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;tightened to multi-month highs<\/a>&nbsp;over concerns about the blazes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 2.7 million barrels of daily oil sands production in Alberta is in \u201cvery high\u201d or \u201cextreme\u201d wildfire danger zones, according to Rystad Energy, an energy consulting firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Monday, outage volumes stood at about 240,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
