{"id":279320,"date":"2024-01-17T08:37:47","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T14:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=279320"},"modified":"2024-01-18T08:25:19","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T14:25:19","slug":"minnesota-wild-win-over-ny-islanders-5-to-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=279320","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Wild Win Over NY Islanders 5 to 0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>St. Paul, MN &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/marc-andre-fleury-8470594\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a>\u00a0earned sole possession of second place on the NHL all-time wins list with 21 saves and his first shutout of the season for the Minnesota Wild in a 5-0 win against the New York Islanders on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleury tied&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/patrick-roy-8451033\">Patrick Roy<\/a>&nbsp;(551) with a 4-3 win at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 6.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/martin-brodeur-8455710\">Martin Brodeur<\/a>&nbsp;has the most wins in NHL history with 691. He has also played the most games by a goalie (1,266); Fleury has played 1007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFinally, right? It\u2019s been a little rough lately,\u201d Fleury said. \u201cI wish we could have done this a little while ago, right? But I think everybody knows, everyone in this room, that we try to work our best and try to win games, climb our way back, right, and tonight that was a great game against a good team and we got that one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/joel-eriksson-ek-8478493\">Joel Eriksson Ek<\/a>&nbsp;scored twice, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/mats-zuccarello-8475692\">Mats Zuccarello<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/marcus-foligno-8475220\">Marcus Foligno<\/a>&nbsp;each had a goal and an assist for Minnesota (18-20-5), which had lost four in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought it was a really good, solid game,\u201d Wild coach John Hynes said. \u201cI think we cleaned up a lot of areas that we felt in the last four-game stretch were major issues, and tonight the players did a great job of executing and playing the game the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/ilya-sorokin-8478009\">Ilya Sorokin<\/a>&nbsp;stopped 29 of 32 shots before he was replaced by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/kenneth-appleby-8478965\">Kenneth Appleby<\/a>, who made six saves in his first appearance of the season for New York (19-14-10), which has lost two in a row and is 2-5-1 in its past eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t like our effort at all,\u201d Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. \u201cI didn\u2019t think we were 100 percent committed to playing the game the right way right from the start and it just kind of snowballed as we went along.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zuccarello gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead on the power play at 2:11 of the first period with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell, I score once every 20 games, so it&#8217;s nice to get one now and then,\u201d Zuccarello said. \u201cI think we played a solid team game. Everyone contributed, whether it was a block shot, a goal, PK, \u2018Flower\u2019, everything. That\u2019s the team game we have to play, and hopefully we can build on that and get on a run here. We have a tough stretch coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/connor-dewar-8480980\">Connor Dewar<\/a>&nbsp;made it 2-0 at 2:18 of the second period, winning the puck from Islanders forward&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/simon-holmstrom-8481601\">Simon Holmstrom<\/a>&nbsp;in the offensive zone and beating Sorokin with a wrist shot from the slot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eriksson Ek scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season with a tip in on the power play at 13:36 to make it 3-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minnesota outshot the Islanders 20-3 in the second period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t do anything very well tonight,\u201d Islanders captain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/anders-lee-8475314\">Anders Lee<\/a>&nbsp;said. \u201cThey were on top of us quite a bit and we couldn\u2019t get to our game. I think our effort needs to be elevated and we need to have a better showing. We got to get (mad). I mean, there\u2019s a lot of little things that add up to a poorly played hockey game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appleby started the third period, making his first appearance since Jan.25, 2018, for the New Jersey Devils in a 3-0 loss to the Nashville Predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSorokin had seen enough rubber,\u201d Lambert said. \u201cI thought he came [in] and did as good a job as he could do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eriksson Ek extended the lead to 4-0 with a short-handed goal at 16:09 of the third. Foligno won the puck at center ice from Islanders defenseman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/noah-dobson-8480865\">Noah Dobson<\/a>&nbsp;and fed Eriksson Ek, who beat Appleby with a wrist shot from the right circle on a 2-on-1 rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foligno scored at 19:03 for the 5-0 final.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/jonas-brodin-8476463\">Jonas Brodin<\/a>\u2019s pass from the left point found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/player\/frederick-gaudreau-8477919\">Frederick Gaudreau<\/a>&nbsp;at the bottom of the right circle, and Gaudreau fed Foligno at the left post for a tap in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was us,\u201d Foligno said. \u201cI think we honestly just snapped out of it a little bit. Jonas Brodin, we all realize what he does. He breaks out the puck a lot. He\u2019s back there so quickly, so we got him back there. It makes guys settle. Guys were making better plays. That\u2019s what we need. We needed a little more plays from guys, and we got it.
