Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) \u2014 The Jamestown City Council met in Special Session Wednesday (Oct 9, 2013) at 4-p.m., at City Hall, to discuss economic indicators in Jamestown.\u00a0 All members were present.<\/p>\n

Areas of discussion included:<\/p>\n

Receiving information concerning certain economic indicators in the Jamestown Trade Area.<\/p>\n

Mayor Andersen said a developers agreement was signed concerning the site development plan, which includes a \u201cretail leakage study,\u201d in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

She noted that some information may be confidential concerning dealing with businesses that may be looking to locate in Jamestown, but that the city will conduct business in public as much as possible.\u00a0 Developers on hand explained working with retailers in the upper midwest, with a home improvement \u201cleakage\u201d study, with Jamestown in need of a major home improvement store.<\/p>\n

Real Estate Developer, Drew Snyder,\u00a0\u00a0President at Woodsonia Real Estate Group Inc, Omaha, Nebraska, the firm hired for the study said Jamestown is under served concerning home improvement stores, such as Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards.<\/p>\n

He presented information on Jamestown and Stutsman County census data, showing stagnant growth. He said unemployment is low in the area, which can be a negative to retailers in terms of available workers to staff stores.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the recent Jamestown Taxable Sales was $251 million of which $4.4 million was in home improvement sales, which he said is extremely low, or 1.8 percent, amounting to $88,000 in sales taxes, annually.<\/p>\n

The Jamestown home improvement store sales \u201cleakage\u201d is about $56 million and $1.1 million in sales taxes.<\/p>\n

The percentage is compared to Brookings, and Mitchell, South Dakota, and North Platte, Nebraska, comparable to Jamestown.<\/p>\n

He defined a \u201ctrade area,\u201d where an area generates most of its sales. He said a 50-mile radius of Jamestown is from where shoppers will come to Jamestown.<\/p>\n

He said sales not captured, going to Bismarck or Fargo is 61% or about $510,000,000 is going out of town.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Snyder also\u00a0said Woodsonia has reached a purchase\u00a0agreement with Liechty Associates to purchase a 65-acre site west of the Buffalo Mall and south of U.S. Interstate 94<\/p>\n

\u00a0The interested home improvement store would require 20- acres and the balance could be used for other retailers and ancillary service providers.\u00a0 Those could include hotels restaurants\u00a0 and fashion stores.<\/p>\n

Snyder said his company is still in negotiations with a home improvement retailer.<\/p>\n

It was explained that with infrastructure, water and sewer is suitable, with improvements needed \u00a0in the area of surrounding roads, including road extensions and adding a proposed roadway.<\/p>\n

Snyder said\u00a0 the data has been presented to the big three home improvement stores.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b>Mayor Andersen said that potential contracts will be reviewed by the city and store officials. She said, one retailer, not named,\u00a0has shown \u201csignificant interest,\u201d in Jamestown.\u00a0 At one point in the meeting the area was referenced as \u201cthe Menard\u2019s site.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snyder said the timeline is for an announcement in the first quarter of 2014 and an opening date for the actual retailer in early 2015.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 8, 2013) \u2013 Interstate Enginering reports, the intersection of 1st St SE and 2nd Ave SE is closed, except for local traffic.<\/p>\n

Starting Wednesday (Oct 9, 2013) the intersection of 17th Street SE (County Road 39) and 19th Avenue SE is partially closed as part of the Jamestown sanitary sewer project. 17th Street SE (County Road 39) will be reduced to one lane of traffic during working hours. Flaggers are also present.<\/p>\n

Motorists are still able to access to the City of Jamestown Baling Facility during this time.<\/p>\n

At this time, this partial closure is expected to be in place for up to three days.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 8, 2013)\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol has identified a 71 year old Litchville \u00a0man who died about 3:30-p.m., Tuesday on Barnes County Road 38, five miles north of Litchville.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, Rodney Vaders\u2019\u00a0 1988 Corvette convertible\u00a0 was westbound on a straight level portion of\u00a0the paved county road. The vehicle gradually drifted into the north ditch. The vehicle rotated clockwise and rolled.\u00a0Vaders \u00a0was ejected. The vehicle and driver came to rest in a soybean field.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0report says Vaders\u00a0was not wearing a seatbelt.<\/p>\n

Damage to the car was estimated at $12,000.<\/p>\n

The Barnes County Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.<\/p>\n

The crash remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 9, 2013) — As the winter season approaches, the Holiday Shopping Marathon is encouraging the public to get in shape for Christmas\u2026 Christmas gift giving that is.<\/p>\n

In partnership with the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo City Tourism, Main Street Downtown and the Jamestown Civic Center, the goal of the Marathon is to increase local spending as well as raise awareness to the various retail offerings available here.<\/p>\n

Buffalo City Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund says, “Last year, Americans spent $1 billion online just on Black Friday. Let\u2019s keep those dollars here. The Holiday Shopping Marathon is the perfect opportunity – at a perfect time of year – for retail stores to display their offerings to Jamestown natives as well as those visiting from out of town.”<\/p>\n

The Marathon begins Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 in conjunction with the Jamestown Civic Center\u2019s Gift & Craft Sale. The “race” ends 26 days later on Black Friday, Nov. 29.<\/p>\n

As the committee prepares for the event, it is asking retail businesses to sign up and participate in the Marathon\u2019s Punch Card. The goal of the Punch Card is to encourage shoppers to patronize local retail businesses as well as visit stores they\u2019ve never entered. To complete the Punch Card, the shopper must visit at least a ten businesses.<\/p>\n

Jamestown Mayor, Katie Andersen says, “We\u2019re hoping people realize that the Jamestown area has a wealth of shopping opportunities. Jewelry, for example, most people know Riddle\u2019s and JCPenney offer a sizeable selection, but Babb\u2019s Coffee House and the Frontier Fort sell accessories as well.”<\/p>\n

Once completed, the shopper can turn the Punch Card in for a chance to win $500 in Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Chamber Bucks. In addition to the grand prize, the committee is also giving out a prize each week. Shoppers who turn their Punch Cards in early get more chances to win.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 9, 2013) — In response to a large amount of local job postings and the high demand for employees, the University of Jamestown Career Center will host a recruiting fair for area employers Oct. 14-18.<\/p>\n

Ten employers each day will set up in the Nafus Student Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to recruit potential employees.<\/p>\n

“Although the main purpose of this event is to connect Jamestown employers with our students, job seekers from the community are also welcome to attend,” says Pat Rinde, Career Center Director.<\/p>\n

The event is free, and space is limited. Employers interested in recruiting should e-mail Lexie Lueck (alueck@jc.edu <mailto:alueck@jc.edu><\/span><\/span><\/span>) with a first, second, and third day choice. News October 9, 2013) \u2014<\/b>Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) along with the Jamestown Area Grief Support Team will hold a candlelight service Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Jamestown for families and loved ones affected by infant loss from miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death in and around the Jamestown area.<\/p>\n

In 1988, the month of October was proclaimed as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. In the United States and Canada, October 15 has been recognized as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. This day allows families and friends to honor their babies who died. Various observances are held throughout these two countries that coincide with the International Wave of Light ceremony at 7:00 p.m. local time in all time zones. Participants are asked to burn their candles for at least one hour, resulting in a continuous chain of lighted candles throughout the globe on this day.<\/p>\n

There will be a candle lighting ceremony to join those around the world and create a wave of light in memory of the babies lost. A fellowship and refreshments will follow the candle lighting service. Tioga Superintendent D’Wayne Johnston refused to go into detail about the threat but says the boy had previous discipline problems. Johnston acknowledged carrying the gun after several people saw him carrying it.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Bismarck Tribune reports that Towry took the stand in his own defense on Wednesday. He said he was trying to break up a fight between Oshkeshequoam and another man when the incident happened.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A fatal disease that has struck North Dakota’s deer population this year is now being found in cattle.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Veterinarian Susan Keller says cattle cases of the disease commonly known as EHD have been reported in several counties. She says ranchers should be looking for symptoms in their herds, including excessive salivation, swollen tongues, and lameness.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state Game and Fish Department last month suspended further sales of deer hunting licenses because of an outbreak of EHD in deer. Agency Wildlife Veterinarian Dan Grove says deer south and west of the Missouri River have been affected, particularly in Sioux and Grant counties.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 White-tailed deer that are infected almost always die, but Keller says infected cattle usually recover. The disease poses no threat to people.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lance Schill pleaded guilty in June to money laundering.\u00a0 Authorities say he advertised himself as a licensed grain bin dealer and then used advance money farmers gave him to build his own home.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutors say when farmers started to complain about the status of their orders, Schill told them the materials were ready to be picked up in Fargo but he was busy with other jobs.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A second count accusing Schill of mail fraud was dropped in exchange for the guilty plea on the money laundering charge.

\u00a0WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – An FBI agent was shot and wounded though not seriously while helping serve a drug warrant in the western North Dakota oil patch.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 FBI spokesman Kyle Loven says the agent was treated at a hospital and released after the incident Monday night near Watford City. The agent wasn’t identified.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Loven didn’t release any other details, citing the ongoing investigation. KFGO reports that a 52-year-old Keene man was arrested on drug and weapon counts but wasn’t charged in the shooting. Several other arrests were made in the same area Monday.

\u00a0NEW YORK (AP) – Manager Joe Girardi has accepted a four-year contract that keeps him in the New York Yankees’ dugout. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had said he wanted to retain Girardi, an Illinois native whose name was mentioned for the Cubs opening. The Yankees have gone a major league-best 564-408 with four postseason appearances in six years under Girardi, but they come off their worst season since 1992 and missed the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MILWAUKEE (AP) – Andy Pafko, a four-time All-Star who played on the last Chicago Cubs team to reach the World Series in 1945, has died at age 92.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pafko also played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Milwaukee Braves, and played in four World Series during 17 years in the major leagues.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He was the Brooklyn left fielder in the 1951 National League playoff game when Bobby Thomson’s pennant-winning homer, the so-called “shot heard ’round the world,” flew over his head.

\u00a0EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) – Defensive end Brian Robison has signed a four-year contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings. A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press it includes $12 million in guaranteed money. Robison was a fourth-round draft pick of the Vikings in 2007.<\/p>\n

\u00a0UNDATED (AP) – Packers coach Mike McCarthy says Pro Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews will miss at least a couple weeks with a thumb injury. Matthews was hurt last weekend against the Lions. He has also been bothered by a sore hamstring. A hamstring injury sidelined Matthews for four games last season.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Los Angeles City Council has reaffirmed its support for efforts to bring an NFL team to the nation’s second-largest city. Members have voted 14-0 today for a resolution saying it is in the interests of both the city and the league to bring a team to Los Angeles.\u00a0 A year ago, the council approved a plan by the sports and entertainment company AEG to build a $1.5 billion downtown stadium, but construction can’t begin until a team is secured.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder says the team cannot ignore its history when it comes to the name of the club. In a letter to season-ticket holders, Snyder said he hopes those offended by the team’s nickname will “try to respect what the name means” to the team, its fans and some Native Americans. He cited polls and anecdotal evidence that indicate support for the name from American Indians.

STOCKHOLM (AP) – And the winner is: Canada’s Alice Munro. In awarding the Nobel Prize in literature today, the Swedish Academy called Munro a “master of the contemporary short story.” She’s the first Canadian writer to receive the prestigious $1.2 million award since Saul Bellow, who won in 1976.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is bringing a group of top House Republicans to the White House today to explore ways of thawing the deep freeze over the budget and the debt limit. House Republicans also have their own meeting scheduled today. There’s been talk of a short-term debt limit increase to avoid a government default this month.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – World financial leaders are meeting in Washington this week and several of them are sounding an alarm about dire global consequences if the U.S. fails to resolve its budget and debt limit standoffs. The concerns are expected to dominate when the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Group of 20 major economies gather.

Ali Zidan was freed from captivity just hours after gunmen abducted him at dawn from the hotel where he lives in Tripoli. A brief report on the state news agency did not give details.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BEIRUT (AP) – A spokesman for the international weapons inspectors in Syria says they’re working on a tight schedule to whittle down sites holding chemical weapons that need to be destroyed. Inspectors need to reach more than 20 sites and have visited three so far. The U.N. hopes to organize cease-fires when inspectors have to cross rebel territory.
