Valley City ND (Valley News Live) – A Valley City man faces multiple charges, including his fourth DUI offense, after allegedly fleeing police and resisting arrest on October 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Nelson was arrested following a brief chase that ended in the parking lot of Valley Bluffs Apartments on East Main Street, according to a Valley City Police Department report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident began around 7:00 p.m. when a Valley City Police Officer observed a gray 2013 Dodge Dart driving erratically on 12th Avenue Northeast. The vehicle nearly hit a curb before correcting course and making an illegal pass, according to the officer\u2019s report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The officer activated his emergency lights, at which point the vehicle turned south and accelerated through the area, running a stop sign at 12th Avenue Northeast and Main Street. The pursuit continued at slow speeds through a residential area before ending at the apartment complex at 1053 East Main Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelson reportedly physically resisted arrest, requiring an officer to deploy his Taser twice. Due to Nelson\u2019s size, officers needed two sets of handcuffs to secure him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers noted Nelson showed indications of impairment, including a strong smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and poor balance. They were not able to conduct sobriety tests due to Nelson\u2019s uncooperative behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While being transported to Barnes County Jail, Nelson repeatedly asked for a lawyer, asked what the \u201creasonable articulable suspicion\u201d was for the initial stop multiple times, and allegedly threatened the officer\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nelson faces felony charges for DUI refusal (4th or subsequent offense in 15 years) and terrorizing, as well as misdemeanor counts of fleeing a peace officer, preventing arrest, and driving under revocation.
