Bismarck, N.D. KCSi-T.V. News Oct. 14, 2013 – The N.D. Department of Human Services\u2019 Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) announced today that<\/p>\n

Opportunity Foundation, Inc. of <\/b>Williston and <\/b>Central Market of <\/b>Bismarck and Mandan have been named co-recipients of the 2013 N.D. State DVR<\/i> Employer of the Year Awards. <\/i><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

The awards honor North Dakota business owners and employers for their continued work with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and for their work within their communities to support, develop, and inspire individuals with disabilities to achieve their full potential. The division and the N.D. State Rehabilitation Council selected Opportunity Foundation, Inc. and Central Market from eight regional employer award recipients.<\/p>\n

The other regional employer award-winners include: Service Master, of<\/p>\n

Valley City; Dan\u2019s Supermarket, <\/b>Dickinson; Leevers Foods, <\/b>Devils Lake; Red River Commodities, Inc., <\/b>Fargo; Rydell Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac, <\/b>Grand Forks; and Gooseneck Implement, <\/b>Minot.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

The two state awards were presented to business representatives from Opportunity Foundation, Inc. and Central Market during a luncheon reception at the division\u2019s annual training conference in Bismarck.<\/p>\n

Russ Cusack, the director of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, says,<\/p>\n

“It is a pleasure to honor these companies. Their progressive attitudes and business practices have allowed individuals with disabilities who are living and working in their communities to put their abilities to work.” Cusack added that these companies serve as models for other North Dakota businesses. Their efforts and those of other employers are the reason North Dakota ranks first among states in the percentage of individuals with disabilities who are employed.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A woman from Minot Air Force Base made her first court appearance on a charge she caused an accident in June that killed a Westhope man.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thirty-two-year-old Maria Sutton appeared Monday in Minot on a negligent homicide charge for the June 23 death of 49-year-old Robert Morrison in north Minot.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 maximum punishment is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if she’s convicted.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 21.

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A man convicted in Williston of offering cash for a hit on an associate in the meth trade will undergo a psychological examination and a drug and alcohol evaluation before he’s sentenced.
\n\u00a0
\nJudge Joshua Rustad ordered both tests for Billy Owens, who was convicted last Thursday of leading a criminal organization and conspiring to commit aggravated assault.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutors say Owens paid Paul Huckstep $1,500 in May 2012 to assault Kenneth Moore, who was shot multiple times and is paralyzed from the chest down.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutor Nathan Madden requested the pre-sentence tests on Friday. Defense attorney Nicole Foster objected, but Rustad said he found both tests relevant. He also refused to lower Owens’ $1 million bond.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A sentencing date has not been scheduled.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – One of several people arrested in the slaying of a Williston-area hobby rancher has been released from jail and all charges against him dropped.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to jail staff and court documents, Jeremy Weyrauch was released from the Williams County Jail Friday and all charges against him were dismissed.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He was arrested earlier this year on a count of conspiracy to commit murder in the May shooting death of 58-year-old Jack Sjol.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sjol’s body was found in a garbage dump on May 14, three weeks after his family reported him missing. Authorities say he had bullet wounds to his head, face and upper left arm.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutors refused to discuss the case Monday and Weyrauch’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – A bride who has already spent thousands of dollars on a dream wedding is donating her reception to a Moorhead organization that serves people with disabilities.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Michelle Marxen says the Oct. 19 event was her “fairy tale wedding,” complete with a ballroom reception, a great band, limos and fabulous flowers.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then Marxen says she got a phone call from her fiance the day the wedding invitations were sent. He didn’t want to go through with it. Even though the wedding was off, contracts had been signed and vendors had to be paid.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Marxen tells WDAY-TV her special day instead will be a special day for the Creative Care for Reaching Independence organization. The ballroom at the Ramada in Fargo, N.D., will host a Halloween celebration for CCRI clients.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota Forest Service official says the cottonwood trees that once dominated forests along the Missouri River are in danger of disappearing.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tom Claeys says once the existing cottonwoods succumb to old age, the cottonwood forests might well be lost forever.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cottonwoods are declining because of changes in river flow due to dam construction, development along the river and changes in land use. Claeys says other species such as Russian olive trees are now taking over the ecosystem. He says it’s an issue from Montana all the way downstream.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cottonwoods have long been important to American Indians. Cedric Goodhouse, of Fort Yates, says a good stand of cottonwoods means the earth is healthy.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate’s top two leaders both say they’re optimistic that they’re closing in on an agreement to prevent a national financial default and reopen the government. Democratic leader Harry Reid opened\u00a0Monday afternoon’s Senate session saying he was “very optimistic we will reach an agreement this week that’s reasonable in nature.” Moments later, Republican leader Mitch McConnell seconded Reid’s view. They spoke after what McConnell termed “a couple of very useful discussions.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. officials say a suspected Libyan terrorist who was held aboard a U.S. warship is now in the United States. The al-Qaida suspect, known as Abu Anas al-Libi, has been under federal indictment in New York for more than a decade. U.S. special operations forces snatched him in Libya earlier this month. He’s expected to stand trial over whether he helped plan and conduct surveillance for the bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) – Nigerian security forces are on high alert amid threats of terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists. Residents of northern cities are being warned to stay home and extra police are being deployed around malls, bus stations, churches and mosques. The Boko Haram (BOH’-koh hah-RAHM’) terrorist network said last week that it’s planning “big attacks.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MIAMI (AP) – A 6-year-old boy has drowned in one of the pools aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship while at sea. The Carnival Victory was on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise when the boy drowned Sunday. Carnival says to the best of its knowledge, it’s the first time a child has drowned aboard one of its ships. The ship arrived at Port Miami this morning. Police are investigating but say the drowning appears to be accidental.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The daughter-in-law of a hunter who was lost for more than two weeks in a Northern California forest says he survived by eating squirrels, lizards and a snake that he shot. Deborah Penaflor says 72-year-old Gene Penaflor hit his head and passed out in the Mendocino National Forest during a deer hunting trip last month. He was found by other hunters on Saturday.
