Doreen Vangerud, age 87, of Valley City, ND, died Thursday, May 28th at her residence under CHI Hospice Care surrounded by her loving family. \u00a0A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 3rd at Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City. \u00a0Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday morning. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Wheaton, MN. \u00a0A livestream of Doreen’s service and an online guestbook will be available at www.lerudmathias.com. \u00a0Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Traditions Funeral Services of Valley City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen Adelyn Vangerud was born to Floyd and Adeline Junkin on May 24, 1939, a few minutes behind her twin sister, Doris. Doreen also grew up with her brother, Walter, and elder sister, Mary Jane, on south Eighth Street in Fargo, North Dakota.  She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1957 and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in August 1960.  While she was attending St. Luke’s School of Nursing, Doreen met her future husband, Dr. Paul Vangerud, in the cafeteria of St. Luke’s Hospital in 1958 when he was completing his residency for medical school. Doreen and Paul were married on September 17, 1960. They lived in Wheaton, Minnesota, for six years, and later moved to Valley City, North Dakota, where Paul was a physician. They lived in Valley City for 56 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her and her husband’s pride and joy were their six children: Karl (Bonnie), Eric (Deb), Bruce (Karen), Sarah (Peter), Heather (Jon), and Mary (Robert). Doreen and Paul were also blessed with ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Doreen believed that “there’s nothing better than family,” a message she shared daily with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen filled her free time with faith, philanthropy, reading, crafts, and piano music. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and served in the church’s Stephen Ministry Group in Valley City. Additionally, she held various officer positions for the local P.E.O. chapter and Christian Women’s Club, and she cherished her many years of volunteering for Hospice of the Red River Valley. Doreen also delighted in several hobbies over the years, which included avid reading, quilting, needlepoint, and playing piano. She especially enjoyed her time as part of a local ragtime group, the Jack Frost Ragtime Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen is survived by three sons, Karl (Bonnie) Vangerud, Eric (Deb) Vangerud, and Bruce (Karen) Vangerud; three daughters, Sarah (Peter) Von Hagen, Heather Vangerud (Jon Greenberg), and Mary (Robert) Vangerud Leraas; grandchildren, Matthew (Megan) Vangerud, Haley (Brandon) Fisher, Claire (Conrad) Kranz, Matthew McEwen, Ashley Vangerud, Tara (Thomas) Tabatt, Austin (Kiaira) Von Hagen, Grace (Leigh) Weiss, Anna Bushy, and Emily Bushy; great-grandchildren, Clark Vangerud, Vera and Mila Fisher, Charlotte, Lorraine, Clayton, and Franklin Kranz, Deacon Vangerud, Emma and Thea Tabatt, and Baby Boy Von Hagen; sister, Mary Jane Halverson; and many nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Paul Vangerud; infant son, Ralph; parents, Floyd and Adeline Junkin; brother, Walter Junkin; and twin sister, Doris Junkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
