Darwin A. Hoggarth, 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Eventide Nursing Home in Jamestown, North Dakota\u201426 years to the day after the passing of his beloved daughter, Laura Fossum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin was born in Carrington, North Dakota, to Vern and Gertrude (McDaniel) Hoggarth. He grew up on the family farm near Kensal alongside his ten brothers and sisters. He attended Eastman County School and Kensal High School, where he developed the strong work ethic and love of farming that would define his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 27, 1953, Darwin married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Neva. Together they shared nearly 73 years of marriage, raising four children: Ameta, Laura, Brenda, and John. Their life together was built on faith, family, hard work, and a deep commitment to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin was a farmer at heart. Whether he was working the land or helping fellow farmers find the right equipment, agriculture was his passion. He sold International Harvester machinery at Loder Implement in Cooperstown, North Dakota, and later with Bourgault Industries in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan. He remained faithfully loyal to the \u201cRed\u201d line of machinery\u2014unlike some of his brothers who favored the \u201cGreen\u201d line. At family gatherings, everyone knew not to discuss equipment brands until after dessert had been served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the last five years of his life, Darwin made Eventide Nursing Home his home. Although officially retired, he quickly found himself supervising and \u201ctraining\u201d the staff. Before long, everyone knew Darwin was feisty, determined, and still believed he was the boss. His quick wit, stubborn streak, and warm heart endeared him to the caregivers, residents, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his lifelong dedication to farming, his infectious sense of humor, and his ability to tell a good story. He believed in hard work, standing by your convictions, lending a helping hand, and enjoying time spent with family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Hoggarth; his children, Ameta (Mark) Schlecht, Brenda (Rob) McDonnell, and John (Teri Searle) Hoggarth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Rachel (Chad) Stallman, Brandon Hoggarth, Katie Messer, Vicki Fossum, and Matthew (Emma) McDonnell; and by his great-grandchildren: Taylor Johnston, Aiden Messer, Lorelai Messer, Jack Stallman, and Henry Stallman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin is also survived by his nieces, Michelle Kalmbach and Annette Doyle; his siblings, Cleon (Shirley) Hoggarth, Roger (Diane) Hoggarth, Ramona Pederson, Clinton (Angela) Hoggarth, Vernon (Renae) Hoggarth, and Fay (Dave) Falk; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Lyle Klose, Margaret Hoggarth, and Leon Doyle; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Gertrude Hoggarth; his stepmother, Irene Hoggarth; his daughter, Laura Fossum; his grandson, Zach Schlecht; his son-in-law, Jerry Fossum; his sister, Eloise Klose; his brothers, DeVerne, Russell, and Odis Hoggarth; his sisters-in-law, Liz Doyle and Eileen Hoggarth; his brother-in-law, Bob Pederson; his nephew, Ronnie Hoggarth; and his grandniece, Haley Rose Hoggarth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorary Pallbearers are Cole Conley, Dan Poland, Ralph Weber, Joe Bourgault, and the many dear friends waiting to welcome Darwin home: Robert \u201cPat\u201d Nihill, Bernard Kramer, Paul Lipetzky, John DiBrito, Jim Bennett, and Joe Grimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A farmer\u2019s work is never truly finished. When the fields of this life were complete, God called Darwin home to tend greener pastures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwin leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and a lifetime of love for his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30am Saturday, August 8, 2026 at St. John\u2019s Catholic Church, Kensal, ND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interment: St. John\u2019s Cemetery, Kensal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
