CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP Oct 25, 2013) – Authorities have a suspect in custody in a bank robbery in the eastern North Dakota city of Carrington.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The FBI says a man entered the Gate City Bank about 2:30 p.m. Thursday and gave a teller a note demanding money. He fled with an undetermined amount of money.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities later stopped a vehicle the suspect was believed to be driving on U.S. Highway 52 southeast of Martin. The driver was arrested on an outstanding state warrant.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 FBI spokesman Gregory Boosalis says the driver is a suspect in the robbery. Authorities did not immediately identify him or say what the warrant was for.
\n\u00a0

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The bishop of the Fargo Catholic Diocese might have exposed hundreds of church members in Fargo and Jamestown to the hepatitis A virus in late September and early October.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state Health Department has issued an advisory of exposure for anyone who attended four churches and had communion there. State Immunization Program Manager Molly Howell says the risk is low, but officials feel it’s important to let people know of the possible exposure.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The diocese announced Monday that Bishop John Folda is taking some time off after being diagnosed with hepatitis A. The diocese says he contracted the infection through contaminated food while attending a conference for newly ordained bishops in Italy last month.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The services are: the Sept. 27, 2013\u00a0school mass at Holy Spirit Church in Fargo, the Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2013 \u00a0priest convention at St. James Basilica in Jamestown,<\/strong> the Oct. 6 mass at Cathedral of St. Mary in Fargo and the Oct. 7 mass at St. Paul\u2019s Catholic Newman Center in Fargo.<\/p>\n

The Rev. Al Bitz, pastor of St. James Basilica, said Thursday the parish was notified earlier this week about the possible exposure to hepatitis A.<\/p>\n

He said between Sept. 29 and Oct. 2 all the priests from the Diocese of Fargo were in Jamestown for a gathering at the Gladstone Inn & Suites.<\/p>\n

He said that “Most of the people who attended Mass on those days were the priests from the gathering, with a few parishioners,”<\/p>\n

Bitz said as far as he knew no one from the basilica, neither staff nor parishioners, has the disease or reported having any symptoms.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Symptoms of hepatitis A include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal discomfort.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 24, 2013) \u2014 The Valley City Police Department look for help from the public as they look for a group of people accused of breaking into a man\u2019s home, on October 18, 2013.<\/p>\n

Reported stolen was a television and computer.<\/p>\n

Valley City Police received the call just before 9:30 p.m. on October, about the break in.<\/p>\n

Philip Chirchir, said he was at home watching television when someone knocked on the door, and did not recognize the five black males and one female outside the door.<\/p>\n

When he refused them entrance to the home, he says, one of the men displayed a black handgun and banged on the door breaking in the door.<\/p>\n

The homeowner call 9-1-1 from the bathroom.<\/p>\n

He heard the suspects leave the home and discovered the items that were missing.<\/p>\n

He says he saw the suspects leaving in a small, four door, sedan that was metallic silver.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 24, 2013) \u2014 Valley City Police report, a Grand Forks man was arrested, accused of vandalizing a restroom inside Jimmy\u2019s Pizza Tuesday night about 6p.m.<\/p>\n

Police Chief Fred Thompson says officers arrested 32-year-old Jon Henry Lightning a short time later at the VFW Club for carrying a concealed weapon and criminal mischief.<\/p>\n

Police removed two swords and a dagger that Lightning allegedly hid under his clothing.<\/p>\n

Thompson says at least one of the bladed swords was used to poke a hole in the sheetrock and to slice other parts of the wall.<\/p>\n

He says the incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 24, 2013) \u2013 A 31 year-old man, stabbed late Tuesday night at the Hitchin\u2019 Post in Jamestown was released from a Fargo Hospital late Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

He was air flighted to a Fargo hospital after the Tuesday night incident. As the investigation continues, his name is not being released.<\/p>\n

12th Avenue SE will close from 7th Street SE to 5th Street SE. This closure is expected to be in place for about two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Interstate Engineering reports, a road closure on 7th Street SE near WedgeCor will be extended Friday. The closure, located at 7th Street SE and 13th Avenue SE, will be extended west to 12th Avenue SE.This closure is expected to be in place for about two weeks.<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday Interstate Engineering reported, the intersection of 3rd Avenue NW and 3rd Street NW\u00a0was closed due to a water main break. Residents along 3rd Street NW, between 2nd Avenue NW and 5th Avenue NW, were told that they may experience a water outage during the day\u00a0 Thursday.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 25, 2013) — The Jamestown City Council\u2019s<\/p>\n

Fire Committee, and Public Works Committee met Thursday evening (Oct 24, 2013) at City Hall. All members were present.<\/p>\n

With Fire Committee business:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion related to the roofing project at the main Fire hall. Re-roofing work will take place, and next spring work will occur on eliminating the chimney.<\/p>\n

Additional downspouts will be installed for drainage.<\/p>\n

The committee recommends moving forward with installing the downspouts.<\/p>\n

The committee recommends approval of revisions to Chapter 15, of the City Code, pertaining to the Fire Protection Code.<\/p>\n

Public Works Committee<\/p>\n

The committee discussed allowing permanent curbside trash pick-up at seven locations.<\/p>\n

City Engineer Reed Schwartzkopf said the proposal is based on slopes and encumbrances in the alleys, creating dangers to workers. Mayor Andersen suggested fixing those problems instead of moving the pick up location.<\/p>\n

The committee tabled the issue until the next Public Works Committee meeting.<\/p>\n

In the meantime those residences that could be affected by a change will be notified of the meeting date.<\/p>\n

The committee recommends approving the Jamestown Force Main and Gravity Sewer Change Order No. 4, with the Jamestown sanitary sewer project. Darrell Hournbuckle of Interstate Engineering said the change order is due to unexpected discoveries of piping and other items. He said the project is 65 percent completed, and is expected to be finished this fall. He said most of the paving should be completed this fall.<\/p>\n

The committee recommends approval of the Jamestown Wastewater & Lift Station Replacement & Force Main Improvements Project Phase I \u2013 Lift Station Replacement change order no. 1.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The committee recommends approving paving of District No. 13-42, in effect “all aspects of the project except the final lift of hot bituminous pavement shall be completed by November 1st, 2013. The final lift of hot bituminous pavement shall be completed by June 1st, 2014.”<\/p>\n

The committee recommends participating in the NDDOT Strategic Highway Safety Plan, up to a cost of $5,000. The information would be added to the city\u2019s Land Use and Transportation Plan.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A presentation was noted of the NDDOT\u2019s recent Traffic Operations Study near Hwy 52 Bypass. The information and recommendations of the NDDOT will be given to the City Council for review.<\/p>\n

An update and sketches were presented, relating to the Vacation request for Joo\u2019s Addition.<\/p>\n

Schwartzkopf suggested a traffic study be conducted along with development issues, and considered by the city, before the vacation request is granted.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Discussion then concerned the alley way behind 100 block of 1st<\/p>\n

Street East, behind U.S. Bank. Schwartzkopf said the north 75 feet of an alley vacated still is a city right of way, and parking issues have ensued, with the three adjacent property owners. He said the alley is primarily a utility conveyance.<\/p>\n

He said the area at question could contain three parking stalls. He suggested just posting the area as “no parking.” Mayor Andersen has concerns about eliminating any downtown parking spaces.\u00a0 The committee recommends 4-1 to signing no parking, and proper enforcement.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A presentation was made of a gray water study from Apex Engineering related to capacity of Waste Treatment facilities for potential future water demands of the city.<\/p>\n

The facility is used by the Cavendish facility, and in the future by Great River Energy, in addition to municipal waste. The biggest improvement needs were indicated, along with treatment issues that have been positive at the facility over its past 25 years. Recommendations were made, for needed improvements over the next several years.<\/p>\n

The committee discussed curbside recycling, including where the city presently stands on the issue, and past actions taken regarding recycling, including the present recycler, and studies that were made on curbside. The issue is on the city\u2019s Strategic Plan, along with automated trash collection, in conjunction with curbside recycling, and cost efficiencies.<\/p>\n

The current strategic plan for Jamestown approved on Aug. 1, 2011, listed “explore the implementation of curbside recycling” as a 2013 goal.<\/p>\n

The Jamestown Recycling Task Force surveyed 1,184 people in Jamestown about recycling. That survey said about 75 percent of residents would be willing to pay fees ranging from $4 to $10 per month for curbside recycling.<\/p>\n

Presently about 1,500 tons of garbage goes through the baler and into the landfills in Jamestown each month.<\/p>\n

Mayor Andersen said studies need to be made on options available, including the city\u2019s role in recycling<\/p>\n

Mayor Andersen said how to move the issue forward, without burdening the city\u2019s staff, is necessary, and whether a consultant is necessary, added to the work the city\u2019s staff has already performed on the issue. Privatization of a recycling program is an option. The Mayor said the city needs to look at the effectiveness of costs relative to service, either under the city or a private firm.<\/p>\n

Joan Morris gave a presentation on costs of operating the city landfill, and increases over the past few years. She noted garbage being brought to the Jamestown landfill, by communities outside of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The committee will review additional information on recycling to be obtained by the City Engineer, to discuss at the City Council meeting.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man arrested in an incident in which a North Dakota deputy sheriff died from an apparent heart attack has pleaded guilty to two felony charges and three misdemeanors. Forty-seven-year-old Robbie Roberson of Lincoln was sentenced to the two years he already has served behind bars and was released from jail Tuesday. He will be on probation for five years.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever is responsible for the dragging death of a pet pony in Bottineau County. Owner Dave Boppre says the 38-inch-tall miniature Shetland pony named Bad Boy was chased from a hobby farm on September 24th, struck with a pickup truck, then tied to the back of the truck and dragged.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education is set to name an interim president for Bismarck State College.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 board at a Friday meeting is expected to act on a recommendation from college President Larry Skogen that college Executive Vice President David Clark fill the head role.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Higher Education board earlier this month named Skogen interim chancellor of the state university system. Skogen has been serving as acting chancellor since the board bought out the contract of Hamid Shirvani in July.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota program that collects unused medication to help fight prescription drug abuse has destroyed more than a half ton of Oxycontin and other drugs.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem\u00a0 (STEHN’-juhm) says the drugs collected through the Take Back program in the past five months were burned this month.\u00a0

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The program was launched in 2009 and has collected almost two tons of unused medication. Disposal containers are located at police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The settlement over the use of the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File totals $15 million nationwide.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As part of the settlement, New York Life has agreed to a number of business practice reforms, including using the file to search for deceased life insurance policyholders so beneficiaries are paid.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State insurance departments in North Dakota, California, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania worked together to examine the company’s practices.

(AP) – The manager for the city of Fargo says the decision by the U.S. House of Representatives to authorize the Red River diversion puts the proposal on “the downward side of the hill.” Fargo City Administrator Pat Zavoral calls authorization for the channel “clearly significant.” He says backers of the project will keep pushing to make sure it remains a high priority.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says a deadline for the National Guard to discontinue fire response services at the Fargo airport should be extended.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Guard has handled fire response at Hector International Airport for decades, but the service is scheduled to end on March 31. That’s the official end date of the Guard’s flying mission.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and Rep. Kevin Cramer say local officials do not have enough time to develop a new fire response plan and buy new vehicles.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The initiative is the second part of the North Dakota-China Reverse Trade Mission, in which Chinese delegates tour North Dakota companies and organizations and meet with local business and government leaders.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – There could be a new look to qualifying for NASCAR events next year. Racing teams have been told that NASCAR is considering eliminating single-car qualifying next season for a group qualifying format similar to what was used on road courses this year.<\/p>\n

NASCAR will mandate baseline concussion testing for its drivers starting next season. NASCAR only recommended the testing this season, but indicated to drivers that a preseason baseline screening could become mandatory as early as 2014.<\/p>\n
