He was 87.<\/p>\n<p>The team said Modell died early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A cause of death was not given.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Modell was among the most important figures in the NFL as owner<br \/>\nof the Cleveland Browns, which became the Ravens after he took the<br \/>\nteam to Baltimore in 1996 in a move that tarnished his reputation<br \/>\nas one of the league\u2019s most innovative and influential owners.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 During his four decades as an NFL owner, Modell helped negotiate<br \/>\nthe league\u2019s lucrative contracts with television networks, served<br \/>\nas president of the NFL from 1967 to 1969, and chaired the<br \/>\nnegotiations for the first the collective bargaining agreement with<br \/>\nthe players in 1968.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He also was the driving force behind the 1970 contract between<br \/>\nthe NFL and ABC to televise games on Monday night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0BALTIMORE (AP) \u2013 Former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell has died.
