North Dakota’s Transportation Department has issued a travel alert for the north central part of the state, urging motorists to beware of blowing and drifting snow.\u00a0 Friday morning, blowing snow is making roads in the eastern Dakotas slick and leading to crashes during the morning commute. And forecasters say the weather is going to get worse.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) Valley City Public Works today is removing as much snow and ice as possible from city streets while the above \u00a0freezing temperatures occur, and before another big freeze hits the area.<\/p>\n

Public Works Director Jeff Differding is asking city residents to remove their vehicle from city streets today as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

Snow removal starts \u00a0late this morning in Southeast Valley City, and then work clockwise in the city, clearing snow and ice.<\/p>\n

Differding says crews will be working into Friday evening until the temperature drops below freezing.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) \u2014 Those who have not yet expressed their preference in a Jamestown air carrier have until Friday, at 5-p.m., to contact Jamestown Regional Airport and the Airport Authority. Local officials will then send off the recommendation later Friday, which is due to the Department of Transportation by January 6, 2014.<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s (Jan 2, 2014) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Regional Airport Manager, Matt Leitner said, airport officials will be sending the recommendation of either the present carrier, Great Lake Airlines, of SkyWest Airlines, with a Code Share with United Express, to provide Jamestown with Essential Airline Service (EAS) for the next two years.<\/p>\n

He said, based on support from the Jamestown City Council, the Stutsman County Commission and others from the community local officials will tell the Department of Transportation of the support for SkyWest.<\/p>\n

The airline proposes, one daily jet flight (50 passenger) to and from the Denver Hub. The service includes a restroom, flight attendant and a galley.<\/p>\n

The online survey at CsiNewsNow.com indicates that Great Lakes Airlines is preferred ty 40% of the those taking the survey, while 60% support SkyWest.<\/p>\n

Leitner says a decision by the Department of Transportation is expected by late January or or early February 2014, with the new two year contract starting in March.<\/p>\n

Coming up in 2014, Leitner pointed out that the airport will have installed a new vertical guidance system, and hangar construction bids will be advertised.<\/p>\n

In 2013 airport improvement projects include installation of a new beacon, along with new gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valley City (CSi) Jamestown and Valley City residents have received a phone call from Grenada with the Area Code 473.<\/p>\n

Jamestown residents got the call earlier this week, and in Valley City a reports came in on the calls on Thursday.<\/p>\n

If the number left on messages is called back, you will be charge long distance rates, and the number connects to an “adult service.”<\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) Officials report that the 2013 Barnes County Salvation Army Kettle Campaign was very successful, netting over $58,000, a new record for the campaign.<\/p>\n

In 2012, $55,000 was raised in the annual kettle campaign.<\/p>\n

$26,000 was collected during the 2011 Red Kettle Campaign.<\/p>\n

Officials thank Marketplace Foods, Leever\u2019s Foods and Shopko for donating their spaces, and volunteer bell ringers, to help make the annual fund raiser a success.<\/p>\n

Bismarck (CSi) The N.D. State Council on Developmental Disabilities has awarded seven grants totaling over $298,000 to five North Dakota organizations that serve individuals with developmental disabilities and their family members. Grant funds are intended to support independent community living, self-advocacy and leadership skills, education, and other supports for individuals with developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n

Family Voices of North Dakota in Edgeley received funding for its Parent to Parent Project, a network of parents supporting families of children with developmental delays, disabilities, and special health needs. The project provides emotional and informational support through face-to-face meetings, phone conversations, e-mail correspondence, and online support groups as well as training for parents and providers, along with other support. Information on the project is online at<\/p>\n

The Arc of Bismarck was awarded grant funding for the third year to support an educational video project titled “Capability Chronicles.” The 10-episode series highlights various disability-related topics that showcase the abilities and contributions people with disabilities can make to a community.<\/p>\n

KAT Communications in Bismarck also received grant funding to establish the N.D. American Indian and Developmental Disabilities initiative. The initiative is intended to educate our state\u2019s American Indian population with developmental disabilities and others about the services and supports available so they can continue to live in their communities. Culturally-reflective materials will be created including three video presentations on developmental disability-related issues, and printed materials for tribal schools, health facilities, providers, and other entities. A one-day summit will also take place to raise awareness about individuals with developmental disabilities on reservations.<\/p>\n

The N.D. Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University was awarded grant funding to support three projects for individuals with disabilities. The Peer Advocates Voices Empower (PAVE) project will equip participants with anti-bullying strategies for students with disabilities in middle schools in Bottineau, Fargo, and Minot.<\/p>\n

The other projects receiving grant funding include assisting individuals with disabilities in securing inclusive, affordable, and accessible housing, and educating North Dakotans about disability-related topics through a statewide outreach campaign called Perceptions Project.<\/p>\n

Each year distributions of grant funds support projects and innovative programs that enhance opportunities for people with developmental disabilities and their families.<\/p>\n

(CSi) Troopers with the North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to 209 crashes from December 1st<\/sup>-31st<\/sup>, 2013 in the Southeast Region of the NDHP. The Southeast Region encompasses the following fifteen counties: Traill, Cass, Richland, Steele, Barnes, Ransom, Sargent, Griggs, Stutsman, LaMoure, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Logan and McIntosh Counties. Of the 209 crashes, 178 were property damage only and 31 were injury crashes. Luckily, no fatal crashes occurred.<\/p>\n

Over the last five years, the NDHP has averaged 110 crashes investigated in the month of December within the Southeast Region. December 2013 was an abnormally busy month compared to other years.<\/p>\n

147 of the 209 crashes occurred in Cass County, with 126 crashes occurring in the Fargo metro area on I94 between Exit 343 and the Red River Bridge and I29 between Exit 60 and Exit 69.<\/p>\n

Motorists continue to drive too fast for conditions, accelerate too quickly while merging into traffic, follow too close, utilize their cruise control and speed on the icy road conditions.<\/p>\n

We urge motorists to slow down, take the cruise control off, increase their following distances, safely merge into traffic, and to wear their seat belt. Motorits should always be prepared for changing road conditions, especially during out winter months and to utilize the NDDOT Travel Information Map or to call 511 before leaving on a trip.<\/p>\n

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Following a string of explosive accidents, federal officials say crude oil being shipped by rail from the Northern Plains across the U.S. and Canada may be more flammable than traditional forms of oil.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a safety alert Thursday. It warns the public, emergency responders and shippers about the potential high volatility of crude being shipped from the Bakken oil shale patch in Montana and North Dakota.<\/p>\n

The warning comes in the aftermath of the massive explosion caused by Monday’s oil train derailment near Casselton, North Dakota. No one was hurt, but worries about toxic fumes prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents.<\/p>\n

In July, a Bakken crude train derailment killed 47 people in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Another oil train derailed and exploded in Alabama in November.<\/p>\n

WILTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are investigating whether a gas leak might have caused a house explosion that injured a man in the central North Dakota town of Wilton.<\/p>\n

McLean County Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Johnson identified the victim as Ernest Miller, a Utah man who was staying at the rental property. Miller was taken to a Bismarck hospital with undisclosed injuries after the blast about 11 a.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief J.D. Youngbird says the explosion leveled the house.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – BNSF Railway says it made infrastructure upgrades totaling $220 million in 2013.<\/p>\n

Spokeswoman Amy McBeth says the North Dakota portion is part of a $4.3 billion upgrade to its system in the U.S.<\/p>\n

McBeth says the upgrades include maintaining and expanding facilities and adding to its locomotive fleet.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police are looking for two men who stole four bottles of booze worth $2,800 from a liquor store.<\/p>\n

One of the bottles shoplifted Sunday afternoon from Happy Harry’s Bottle Shop was a $2,600 bottle of King Louis XIII cognac.<\/p>\n

Police say one suspect is in his 50s to 60s and the other is in his late 30s to mid-40s. Employees saw the men drive away in a late 1990’s teal minivan.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The governors of North Dakota and Maryland have made a friendly bet on the NCAA Division One Football Championship Subdivision title game.<\/p>\n

North Dakota State meets Towson University Saturday in Frisco, Texas, for a shot at its third consecutive FCS national football championship.<\/p>\n

Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) wagered a case of North Dakota-made Dreamfields low-carb pasta. Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley put up a package of crabcakes.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State’s Brock Jensen has won more games than any other quarterback in the history of the Football Championship Subdivision. He wants just one more.<\/p>\n

The senior signal-caller will cap off a stellar career on Saturday when the undefeated and top-seeded Bison face Towson for the FCS championship in Frisco, Texas.<\/p>\n

Jensen has won 47 games with the Bison. Earlier this season he surpassed Armanti Edwards, who won 43 times while leading Appalachian State to three straight FCS titles from 2005 to 2007.<\/p>\n

Jensen says the idea of his last game makes him sad, but he’s focusing on winning NDSU’s third straight FCS championship.<\/p>\n

Jensen adds that he’s looking forward to the next chapter in his life, which his coaches say should include a pro tryout.
\nBADLANDS BOWL COACHES<\/p>\n

MILES CITY, Mont. (AP) – Bozeman High football coach Troy Purcell has been named to coach Montana’s team for the 21st annual Badlands Bowl against an all-star team from North Dakota.<\/p>\n

Purcell will be assisted by Levi Wesche of Bozeman, Mike Ludwig of Laurel, Jason Christenson of Havre, Clint Layng of Boulder and Jay Fredrickson of Ennis.<\/p>\n

Purcell says it’s an honor to represent Montana. His Bozeman Hawks posted a 14-0 record in winning the Class AA state title this fall.<\/p>\n

This year’s game will be held June 21 in Dickinson, North Dakota. The Montana team leads the series 15-5. North Dakota won 43-29 last year in Miles City.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Troy Huff scored 25 points and hauled in 11 rebounds to help North Dakota edge Southern Utah 65-61 on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Huff, 9 of 16 from the field with two 3-pointers, got help from Jamal Webb, who scored all 14 of his points in the second half and gave North Dakota (4-8, 1-1 Big Sky) the go-ahead score with 2:04 left. North Dakota trailed 37-36 at the half but the kept the game close and secured the win with a 9-4 spurt in the final minutes.<\/p>\n

It was Southern Utah’s debut Big Sky Conference game.<\/p>\n

The Thunderbirds (1-9, 0-1) built a 25-16 lead in the first half with a 9-0 run that was snapped by a Huff 3-pointer and couldn’t hold off North Dakota down the stretch.<\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Jon Horford scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Michigan withstand another loss of one of its star players and beat Minnesota 63-60 last night. Elliott Eliason had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (11-3, 0-1). Andre Hollins had 12 points and five boards and the Golden Gophers grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. But they missed six free throws and Austin Hollins missed eight of his nine shots.<\/p>\n
