North Dakota\u2019s Transportation Department has issued a travel alert for the north central part of the state, urging motorists to beware of blowing and drifting snow.\u00a0 Friday morning, blowing snow is making roads in the eastern Dakotas slick and leading to crashes during the morning commute. And forecasters say the weather is going to get worse.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) –\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The National Weather Service has posted a blizzard warning for much of North Dakota and part of eastern South Dakota, and winter weather advisories and watches for other parts of the two states.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forecasters say the winter blast will bring only an inch or two of snow, but winds gusting to 50 mph will create travel problems.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Potentially life-threatening arctic air will follow on the heels of the storm, with wind chills expected to drop to as low as 60 degrees below zero Saturday night through Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce is surveying its membership with the survey results helping to guide the Chamber Board of Directors in taking, or not taking a stance.<\/p>\n

At issues is a concern from LeRoy Wegenast, about whether the city should support a “big box,” store coming to Jamestown, and generally offering incentives to retail businesses.<\/p>\n

Wegenast was quoted as saying “If Jamestown is a good place for a big box home improvement retailer they should come here on their own.”<\/p>\n

An announcement by the Jamestown City Council in October of 2013 said there is a developers agreement in place with R.H. Johnson to create a retail development area near the Buffalo mall, to attract a “big box,” store to Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The agreement says the city will develop a comprehensive list of pre-development and development incentives it is prepared to provide, and that one of the big three of home improvement retailers \u2013 Menards, Lowes, or Home Depot have expressed interest in the project.<\/p>\n

Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen said negotiations with the retailer are continuing and an announcement could occur in late January or early February, 2014.<\/p>\n

Wegenast is attempting to gauge the opinions of the Jamestown, business community, with the Chamber survey.<\/p>\n

Wegenast sent one letter to the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce in October. He sent another letter to each chamber member on Oct. 24.<\/p>\n

The C hamber is currently surveying its members, through January 6, 2014. Wegenast has concerns about using incentives to attract a home improvement store, and the type of jobs the store would create, along with involving the public in the development process.<\/p>\n

Mayor Andersen has said there will be a time for public comment, saying that “There\u2019s nothing official to talk about,” adding, “Why would we talk about something now, when we have nothing official to talk about?\u2019<\/p>\n

Andersen says if the city offers tax increment financing, a program where the property is assessed and the amount that would be paid in taxes is instead applied to paying for the infrastructure of the project, then public hearings would be required.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown\u2019s New Year\u2019s baby is a 7 pound 14 ounce girl, born at Jamestown Regional Medical Center, Thursday January 2, 2014 at 7:52-a.m. Anya Lynne Wieck, of Jamestown. She weighed 7-pounds, 14-ounces.<\/p>\n

Her parents are Justin and Laura Wieck of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

Laura is a Special Education teacher at Gussner Elementary School.<\/p>\n

Justin is the University of Jamestown, head men\u2019s basketball coach, who missed two Jimmie games in Iowa, as Laura\u2019s pregnancy was stressful, and resulted in a Caesarean section delivery.<\/p>\n

Anya has an older brother, Jordan, who was born January 8, 2012.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A West Fargo teenager is accused of falsely reporting fires in an attempt to get a date.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Chief Mike Reitan says the 18-year-old high school student twice called 911 on Wednesday to try to get dance practice canceled at a local community center so a dancer would be free to go on a date with him.

BOSTON (AP) – Thousands of flights around the country are canceled Friday, because of a winter storm that has dumped nearly two feet of snow near Boston. The storm is blamed for at least nine deaths in the eastern half of the country. It’s brought some bitter cold temperatures — including eight degrees below zero in Burlington, Vermont.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NEW YORK (AP) – The New York City metropolitan area has between 6 and 11 inches of snow. Forecasters say flurries or light snow could continue into midday, but the snow isn’t expected to get much higher. Flights were suspended at Kennedy Airport this morning because of zero visibility and high winds.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration says a Supreme Court justice should stop blocking the new health care law’s requirement that some religion-affiliated organizations provide health insurance that includes birth control. The Justice Department Friday called on Justice Sonia Sotomayor to dissolve her stay on the contraceptive coverage requirement. The government says religious nonprofit groups can certify that they don’t want to provide contraceptive coverage. A group of Catholic nuns who run nursing homes sued, saying even signing that form violates their beliefs.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Florida is about to overtake New York, and become the nation’s third-most-populous state. And it’s not the retirees who are fueling the growth. Seniors account for less than 10 percent of new residents in the last several years. Instead, more than half of the new arrivals are between 25 and 64. Migrants from Latin American dominated the newly-arrived Floridians from outside the United States.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VATICAN CITY (AP) – Pope Francis is warning that priests can become “little monsters” if they aren’t trained properly while studying as seminarians. Francis also warned against accepting men for the priesthood who may have been implicated in sexual abuse, saying the protection of the Catholic faithful is most important. He spoke at a closed-door meeting of 120 superiors of religious orders a few weeks ago.
