Motorists are encouraged<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to reduce speeds and drive accordingly. Cities included in the<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Travel Alert are Minot, Mohall, Bottineau, Towner, Garrison, and<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 surrounding areas. (AP) &#8211; Motorists in the Dakotas are being urged to take precautions if they&#8217;re traveling in the extreme cold pushing through the region.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wind chills in some areas are in the minus 30s, 40s and 50s. National Weather Service meteorologist Philip Schumacher says motorists should carry winter survival kits and a charged cellphone, because if they become stranded they could suffer frostbite quickly.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota&#8217;s Transportation Department is urging motorists in much of that state to beware of blowing snow that&#8217;s reducing visibility and scattered ice that&#8217;s creating slick conditions.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Travel alerts have been posted for the eastern, north central and southwestern parts of the state. The alerts mean people can still travel but they should use caution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0CHICAGO (AP) &#8211; A whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a &#8220;polar vortex&#8221; is descending into much of the U.S., pummeling parts of the country with a dangerous cold that could break decades-old records. For a big chunk of the Midwest, the subzero temperatures are following heavy snow and high winds. The forecast is extreme: 32 below zero in Fargo, N.D.; minus 21 in Madison, Wis.; and 15 below zero in Minneapolis, Indianapolis and Chicago. Wind chills could drop into the minus 50s and 60s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1409nw3avfront.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-35909\" alt=\"1409nw3avfront\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1409nw3avfront-300x201.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1409nw3avfront-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1409nw3avfront-260x175.png 260w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1409nw3avfront.png 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Jamestown (Csi)&#8211;\u00a0 A house in Northwest Jamestown was destroyed by fire Saturday evening.\u00a0 City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says the call came in about 6:30-p.m., to a single family structure at 1409 3rd Avenue, Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>He says the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.\u00a0 When the seven units and 32 city fire fighters arrived on the scene, flames and smoke were coming from the house.<\/p>\n<p>He says two fire fighters entered the structure, to find the \u201cseat\u201d of the fire but were surrounded by the fire, and a \u201cMay Day,\u201d was called and the two were able to safely exit the burning structure.<\/p>\n<p>Reuther says at that point fire fighters went into a defensive mode and cut holes in each side of the house, and the floor which led to a crawl space, where foam was sprayed onto the burning structural members.<\/p>\n<p>The fire is believed to have started in the crawl space beneath the home, although the structure was unsafe to make an immediate determination.<\/p>\n<p>Reuther said the Buffalo Valley Red Cross and Jamestown Salvation Army were on scene and set up in\u00a0 a nearby garage provide by a neighbor, from which hot coffee and soup were provided to the fire fighters battling the blaze in dangerous sub-zero temperatures and wind chills.<\/p>\n<p>The family is staying with relatives.\u00a0 No injuries were reported, with fire fighters spending a consider length of time on the scene, estimated at about four hours.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday morning the JFD was again called out to the address for possible smoke or steam coming from the basement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities are investigating what caused a liquid propane tank to catch fire near the Bobcat manufacturing plant in Wahpeton.<\/p>\n<p>Fire Chief Derek Miller says gas leaked from a pump on one of two 1,000-gallon tanks and somehow ignited early Monday. That created a fireball about 8 feet high and 12 feet wide. No one was hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters who responded to the scene had to battle not only the flames but also frigid weather. The temperature at the time was about 24 degrees below zero, and the wind child was about twice as cold.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Two Devils Lake firefighters were taken to a hospital to be treated for frostbite after battling a fire at a grain elevator.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fire Chief Jim Moe\u00a0says \u00a0crews were called to the scene just after 8 p.m. Sunday. He says firefighters had to fight the blaze in wind chills that reached about 50 degrees below zero.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Moe says the state fire marshal is on the scene to investigate the cause.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0WISHEK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Fire has destroyed a welding business in the southeastern North Dakota town of Wishek.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Highway 13 into town was shut down and traffic rerouted for several hours Sunday afternoon while firefighters fought the blaze at Central Iron. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There were no major injuries, though Fire Chief Dave\u00a0says \u00a0one firefighter was taken to a hospital to be treated for breathing problems.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Firefighters were able to save surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Grand Forks homeless shelter is opening its doors for people who have nowhere to go with temperatures and wind chills dipping to dangerous levels.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Northlands Rescue Mission is giving those in need, a place to stay.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About this time last year, Northland Rescue Mission began a waiting list &#8211; the first time that was necessary in the last 70 years. The waiting list was needed again this winter, and it started back in October.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Robert Raymer has been living at Northland for a month. He says he&#8217;s seen a lot of people come to escape the cold. He says no one is turned away, and the center has mats they can throw down on the floor if needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A man sentenced to life in prison for killing his niece and nephew on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation is appealing the case to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A jury in September found 22-year-old Valentino &#8220;Tino&#8221; Bagola guilty of two counts of felony murder for the May 2011 slayings of 9-year-old Destiny Jane Shaw-Dubois and her 6-year-old brother, Travis Lee DuBois Jr.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bagola was sentenced in December to life without the possibility of parole.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Bagola stabbed the children to death after he sexually assaulted the girl because he was angry at their father but couldn&#8217;t find him.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Defense attorneys argued that children&#8217;s father was responsible. Travis Dubois Sr. originally confessed to the crimes and later recanted.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bagola&#8217;s earlier appeals to federal district court were rejected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to kicking a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer in the chest during an altercation in December 2012. Nineteen-year-old Christopher Thunder Hawk, of Cannonball, is charged with assault on a federal officer. The charge carries a maximum penalty of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for April 14.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating two workplace deaths in Williams County over the last few weeks.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nA\u00a0 fallen forklift crushed a 26-year-old Colorado man and killed him on Dec. 18. Daniel Okyere worked for the Williston branch of United Pulse Trading when his jacket got lodged in the lift.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On Dec. 31, a piece of drilling pipe dislodged and struck and killed Keith Munro of Sioux Falls, S.D., at a Nabors Drilling rig about 10 miles north of Williston.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OSHA Area Director Eric Brooks said both investigations are ongoing.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OSHA&#8217;s procedure is to look at every aspect of the job being done, including training for the job, the equipment that was used and the service procedures surrounding the job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The number of hogs in North Dakota as 2013 came to a close was unchanged from the previous year.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The latest report from the federal Agriculture Department shows that hogs and pigs in the state on Dec. 1 totaled 135,000 head. The breeding hog inventory was 35,000 head and the market hog inventory 100,000 head. All three figures were unchanged over the year.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The report says the 2013 North Dakota pig crop was down 3 percent from 2012, to 767,000 head.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; An annual two-day agricultural conference is scheduled in Devils Lake this week.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 2014 Lake Region Extension Roundup is Tuesday and Wednesday at the Devils Lake Memorial Building and Ramsey County Courthouse.
