Valley City (CSi) Valley City Residents are being asked to conserve electrical power usage, after several customers experienced a power outage Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Electrical Supervisor, Stan Hansen says, while crews work to repair a substation, that went off line about 4-a.m., power was rerouted to another substation.<\/p>\n

Until the substation is repaired and back on line, Valley City residents are being asked to reduce power usage, until further notice.<\/p>\n

Hansen says it will be critical to cut back on power Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning when the temperature was forecast dip to 25 below zero.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) A survey of Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce members shows 51 percent of the 156 respondents of a Chamber survey, say the city should be a part in retail economic development.<\/p>\n

The survey asked “Should the city of Jamestown engage in retail economic development? And should public funds be used by the city of Jamestown to purchase land for retail real estate development?” Those responding were also allowed to add comments with their responses.<\/p>\n

Asked if the city should purchase land for retail real estate development. and 51 percent, said no.<\/p>\n

The survey was a result of a big box home improvement store looking to locate in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The City of Jamestown has announced a developer’s agreement with R.H. Johnson Co. to purchase land in southwest Jamestown with the intent of bringing either a Menards, Home Depot or Lowes to Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The agreement requires the city to purchase the land for the development, and the city to pay fees of up to $900,000 to the developer as the project progresses.<\/p>\n

The results of the poll distributed to 450 members, will be used by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors when it formulates a position on the project at its January meeting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) \u2013 Dakota Spirit AgEnergy officials say construction is planned to start this month January for the 65-million gallon per year, $155 million renewable fuels plant at Spiritwood Energy Park.<\/p>\n

The plant expects to employ about 275 workers during construction and will employ about 36 people when it goes on line and is operational.<\/p>\n

The plant will purchase about 23 million bushels of corn to produce ethanol and fuel-grade corn oil to make bio-diesel and distillers grain for livestock feed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Commission met in Regular Session on TUESDAY January 7, 2013. All members were present.<\/p>\n

Approval of Consent Agenda Items Included:<\/p>\n

Monthly Reports from the Fire Chief, Building Inspector, Auditor, Municipal Judge and Public Works Accountant.<\/p>\n

Monthly Bills for the City and Public Works in the Amount of $2,105,027.71<\/p>\n

A Public Hearing was held for Replat of Hi-Line Estates. City Attorney Myhre said the public hearing was advertised for 10 days as required.<\/p>\n

Resolutions:<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution Declaring Resolution of Necessity for the replat of Hi-Line Estates.<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution creating Paving Improvement District No. 104. The area includes the Winter Show Road area, 2nd Street northeast and northwest, 12th Street northeast and northwest.<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution creating Paving Improvement District No. 106. The area includes a mill and overlay on 4th St northwest, and 8th to Central Avenue.<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution approving engineers report and directing preparation of detailed plans, specifications and estimates of probable cost for Paving Improvement District No. 104.<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution approving engineers report and directing preparation of detailed plans, specifications and estimates of probable cost for Paving Improvement District No. 106.<\/p>\n

Approved a Resolution approving an electric rate increase.<\/p>\n

City Administrator David Schelkoph said the last increase was in 2010.<\/p>\n

He proposes an overall increase of 4%, a 2% increase in city costs of power, and a 2% increase in materials, labor and other costs of distribution of electricity.<\/p>\n

Mayor Werkhoven pointed out the increase is based on the city\u2019s cost of power.<\/p>\n

New Business:<\/p>\n

The City Commission voted to adopt the Operational Procedures for AMI process. Commissioner Magnuson said he is opposed to charging for the meter to be moved outside the home or building at a cost of $600 if the owner opts out. Schelkoph said leaving the meter inside is problematic.<\/p>\n

About 20-25 customers are affected.<\/p>\n

The City Commissioners voted to approve the procedures with financing up to 18 months the cost of moving the meters outside.<\/p>\n

Commissioners vote to send a letter of support to the ND Highway Dept. requesting the State of ND to sell their land in the SE corner of the Kathryn interchange for Valley City Development Corporation development. Economic Development Director Jennifer Feist explained the procedure would be through the public sale process.<\/p>\n

She said the land is located on the south side of I-94 and the east side of the Kathryn Road.<\/p>\n

Considered selling three lots city property at 1054 Riverview Drive that came back to the city through delinquent tax payments. City Commissioners voted to approve the sales, which will be advertised.<\/p>\n

Considered the sale of the city auditorium, for $1,000, with plans to be converted into an event center, which will stay on State\u2019s Historic Sites Registry.<\/p>\n

The building is appraised at $178,000, costing the city $25,000 annual to carry the building.<\/p>\n

The City has invested about $35,000 in upkeep of the building.<\/p>\n

The City Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the sale, contingent upon approval by the City Attorney.<\/p>\n

Brandon\u00a0and \u00a0Lindsey Culver of Valley City purchased the building and outlined plans they have for the building.<\/p>\n

The City Commission approved having a public meeting for Sheyenne River Management-Permanent Flood protection update, along with the Greenway, Erosion mitigation. The date to be announced. Commissioners Pedersen, and Nielson voted in opposition<\/p>\n

City Administrator\u2019s Report:<\/p>\n

David Schelkoph reported on the Tuesday\u2019s power outage in Valley City (see separate story).<\/p>\n

He asked citizens to conserve power usage, such as doing laundry after 8-p.m., and turning off some lights.<\/p>\n

City Update and Commissioner Reports<\/p>\n

City Attorney Myhre noted the city of Valley City is experiences growth, with a recent article in the Fargo Forum, concerning growth along the I-94 cooridor.<\/p>\n

He said he will attend to personal items soon, and asked if city matters can be handled through is office before that time.<\/p>\n

City Building Inspector Dave Andersen reminded landlords that it\u2019s their responsibility to attend to any heating complaints by renters.<\/p>\n

City Fire Chief Retterath reminds residents to keep fire hydrants free of snow.<\/p>\n

City Police Chief Fred Thompson said the remodeling process at the police station is progressing on target.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Nielson said the Convention and Visitors Bureau is looking forward to working with the new owners, who will be converting the auditorium into an event center.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) In his Annual Report, Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Robert Lech identified English Language Learner (ELL) students as a group whose needs will have to be addressed in the near future.<\/p>\n

The annual report is compiled by Lech, his assistant and the school\u2019s business staff.<\/p>\n

Lech plans to make a formal presentation and recommendation to the board.<\/p>\n

He says the school district is currently meeting the needs of those students, but as the school looks to grow those needs will change.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Stutsman County Correctional Center, Jail Administrator, Tracey Trapp has resigned his position, which becomes effective February 1, 2014..<\/p>\n

Darin Goter will serve as interim jail administrator while a search is conducted for Trapp’s replacement.<\/p>\n

Goter has been Deputy Administrator at the jail since October 2012.<\/p>\n

Before that he served as a sergeant.<\/p>\n

As Deputy Administrator, he assisted in implementing new training programs for the jail staff, as recommended by a jail consultant.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown\/Stutsman United Way Campaign is looking to wrap up receiving donations, through February this year.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 United Way Vice President, Megan Aldinger said the campaign kicked-off event of prom in September and the bake sale in October, with great success.<\/p>\n

The United Way continues collect packets and donations through February.<\/p>\n

She said the campaign is a little behind the donations in comparison to the donations we received the year before so they’re hoping to collect donations in the next month to meet our goal.<\/p>\n

This year the board set an ambitious goal of $200,000, the same as last year, with an increase in need in the community over the last few years, but they’ve also seen an increase in donations, and they’re hopeful that the community will come together again to help meet the needs in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The Jamestown\/Stutsman campaign serve 22 agencies, including the local Red Cross, local Girl Scout and Boy Scouts, the Arts Center, RSVP +, Senior Companion Program, Service Dogs of America, James River Transit, and the YMCA.<\/p>\n

Ms. Aldinger pointed out that a donation to the United Way helps young and old alike, and added that 99% of donations stays local.<\/p>\n

You can make a donation through employers by either making a one-time donation out of our check or having a certain number of dollars come out of each check. That is how United Way raises the most money.<\/p>\n

She said the United Way is thankful to their biggest donors who make all the difference such as, Newman Signs, Cavendish, Cargill, UTC Aerospace Systems, Noridian, Jamestown Regional Medical Center, and many others. Their generous support really makes a difference in the community.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) At the January 6, 2014 City Council meeting, the owner of Strategic Plan ND, Jim Boyd, and Mainstreet Downtown Association President, Nancy Miller, told the Council of plans for the Downtown Association for 2014.<\/p>\n

The Mainstreet Downtown Association newsletter reports that the organization is doing some planning for the future and has enlisted the services of Strategic Plan ND to assist them.<\/p>\n

The MSDA board of directors has been meeting with Jim Boyd, the past<\/p>\n

months and has come up with a strategic plan that will guide the organization in the future.<\/p>\n

Ready Rating is a FREE service designed to help businesses be prepared in the event of an emergency. Some examples include a family depending on you to bring home a paycheck. Developing a plan to relocate a business due to a catastrophic event. Those topics will be dealt with in this training.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police and federal authorities say they’re looking into “strong similarities” between an armed robbery of a payday loan store and pawn shop in Fargo on Tuesday and the robbery of a similar store in neighboring West Fargo about two months ago.

\nTwo men entered the Mr. Money store in Fargo armed with a pistol. They demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, and a police search failed to find them.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two men armed with pistols also robbed the Mr. Money store in West Fargo in mid-November.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says she and a representative of Sen. John Hoeven’s office met with a National Transportation Safety Board leader to discuss the recent derailment of an oil train on the outskirts of Casselton.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The BNSF Railway train derailed Dec. 30, with several cars exploding and catching fire. No one was hurt, but most of Casselton’s 2,400 residents temporarily evacuated because of concerns about air quality.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The NTSB is investigating what happened. Heitkamp says she and a representative of Hoeven on Tuesday met with Rob Hall, director of the NTSB’s Railroad, Pipeline and Hazardous Material Investigations. Heitkamp says she impressed upon Hall that North Dakotans expect “a thorough and comprehensive investigation.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0A fleet of dump trucks owned by Northern Improvement has been running up and down Highway 200 supplementing coal deliveries that can’t be met by rail shipments.

Denny Sanford is giving another $125 million to the Dakotas-based health system that bears his name for a program that will incorporate genetics into primary care.
