Valley City (CSi) Valley City Police report a Valley City man is facing a felony charge of luring a minor via of an electronic device and a misdemeanor charge of corruption or solicitation of a minor.<\/p>\n

Police say 46-year-old Chris Kinney allegedly sent text messages of a sexual nature to a juvenile and wanted to meet up for sexual acts.<\/p>\n

A Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent and police with the cooperation from the juvenile\u2019s parents took possession of the cell phone and continued texting Kinney.<\/p>\n

Kinney was arrested when he showed up at a prearranged meeting place in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Police say there may be other victims as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n

Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp announced the names of the two North Dakota students who have been selected as delegates to the 52nd annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) that will be held March 8 \u2013 15, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Bethany Berntson of Valley City and Tyler Toepke-Floyd of Wishek were chosen from across the state to be part of the group of 104 student delegates who will attend the program\u2019s 52nd annual Washington Week.<\/p>\n

The USSYP was created by Senate Resolution 324 in 1962 and has been sponsored by the Senate and fully funded by The Hearst Foundations since inception. Originally proposed by Senators Kuchel, Mansfield, Dirksen and Humphrey, the impetus for the program as stated in Senate testimony was “to increase young Americans\u2019 understanding of the interrelationships of the three branches of government, the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and the vital importance of democratic decision making not only for America but for people around the world.”<\/p>\n

Bethany Berntson attends Valley City Junior-Senior High School and serves as her class president and as a Student Council representative. She is a student representative to the North Dakota Association of Student Councils, a National Merit Scholar semifinalist, a ND Farmer’s Union Distinguished Student, and the Voice of Democracy Regional Runner-up. She received the National Forensics League Rank of Outstanding Distinction and is a ND Leadership Seminar Outstanding Student Leader. She is the chair of school food drives; a speaker at Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs; and her Church Youth Group\u2019s secretary-treasurer.<\/p>\n

Tyler Toepke-Floyd attends Wishek High School and serves as a Student Council representative.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Classic Car Club presents the 2014 Winter Wheels Car Show, on Saturday February 8, 2014 from 9-a.m., to 6-p.m., at the Jamestown Civic Center.<\/p>\n

There will be free Hot Wheels toys for kids, while the supply lasts.<\/p>\n

There is a $20 entry fee, with setup and registration on Friday from noon to 8-p.m.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Land Use and Transportation sessions are continuing.<\/p>\n

The next meeting is scheduled for February 26, 2014 focusing on the downtown area.<\/p>\n

Developers will host sessions in the Basement Conference Room at the City Hall, from 11 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 7 PM.<\/p>\n

The session are open to the public sessions for input or to learn more about the improvements to the city of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A convicted felon with a history of violent crime and drug offenses has pleaded guilty to an illegal weapons charge.<\/p>\n

Ryan Mountain, of Grand Forks, is charged in federal court with possession of firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.<\/p>\n

Authorities say the 33-year-old Mountain had a 9 mm pistol and eight rounds of ammunition in a bedroom of a residence in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n

Mountain has prior felony convictions for delivering drugs, aggravated assault and terrorizing.<\/p>\n

Sentencing is set for April 21 in Fargo.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Military officials say Minot Air Force Base had a record impact of nearly $584 million on the area economy in fiscal 2013, an increase of more than $61 million over the previous year.<\/p>\n

The annual report uses Pentagon formulas and takes into account base payroll, purchases and indirect jobs created.<\/p>\n

The base in northern North Dakota has nearly 13,000 personnel. It oversees B-52 bombers and Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota National Guard is conducting training for possible spring flooding.<\/p>\n

The exercise is slated for Saturday at the Guard headquarters in Bismarck.<\/p>\n

The Guard says it has helped battle river and overland flooding in North Dakota every year but one since 2009.<\/p>\n

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Independent oil refiner Tesoro Corp. says it is replacing older railcars in its crude oil railcar fleet with ones that meet the latest design standards.<\/p>\n

The company says the new cars will have more robust safety features such as improved shielding around the heads of the cars and reinforced relief valve systems.<\/p>\n

Tesoro says 90 percent of its fleet already has those features, which meet newer design standards set by the rail industry in recent years. The company says the remaining 10 percent of the cars will be replaced by mid-2014.<\/p>\n

Keith Casey is Tesoro’s senior vice president of strategy and business development. He says the company chose to “proactively” make these changes ahead of expected federal regulations.<\/p>\n

Tesoro operates six refineries in the western United States.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation has partnered with Ford Motor Co. to offer a new program to teach teenagers safe driving skills.<\/p>\n

The program encourages teenagers and parents to drive together under a variety of weather conditions, at different times of the day and on unfamiliar settings such as rural roads, highways and city traffic.<\/p>\n

The guide is now available to parents and guardians of teens seeking a learner’s permit. Copies are available at all driver’s license sites.<\/p>\n

The state’s transportation department says teens are responsible for about 20 percent of fatalities and major injuries that happen on North Dakota’s roads and highways.<\/p>\n

North Dakota teens under the age of 16 are required to log 50 hours of supervised driving before getting a driver’s license.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – In 2007, North Dakota’s Agriculture Department issued the nation’s first hemp production licenses to farmers Dave Monson and Wayne Hauge.<\/p>\n

But neither has grown a crop, after failing to get Drug Enforcement Administration approval and losing a court battle against the federal government.<\/p>\n

Both farmers hope a farm bill provision allowing for research plots of hemp in states that allow its cultivation will be a major step toward the establishment of a hemp industry in the country.<\/p>\n

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson feels the same. But he says much still must happen before hemp fields can dot the countryside. The federal Agriculture Department must write rules, and other agencies including the DEA might still weigh in. And North Dakota State University agronomist Burton Johnson says research will take time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 19-year-old Fargo native who answered the call for extras in the World War Two movie “The Monuments Men” wound up spending several days on the set after he was selected for a brief non-speaking role.<\/p>\n

Connor Linnerooth is currently studying acting in Los Angeles. A year ago, he was attending school in Germany when the film advertised for 1,000 men to serve as extras. From there, he was selected to play an American courier who delivers a telegram to John Goodman.<\/p>\n

Linnerooth is shown briefly in the film’s trailer.<\/p>\n

The 2012 Fargo Davies High School graduate earned about $160 for the part. He says it was a “dream come true.”<\/p>\n

The movie also features George Clooney, Bill Murray, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett. It opens at movie theaters today.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Lawrence Alexander scored 17 points to lead North Dakota State past Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis 66-60 last night. Taylor Braun finished with 14 points and Jordan Aaberg scored 11 as NDSU shot 51.8 percent overall in Fargo.<\/p>\n

OGDEN, Utah (AP) – Davion Berry scored 21 points and Joel Bolomboy added 20 points and 10 rebounds as Weber State took down North Dakota 84-72 on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Weber State (12-7, 9-2 Big Sky) won its 25th consecutive regular season home conference game and has a two-game lead atop the conference standings.<\/p>\n

Jaron Nash had 27 points and nine rebounds for North Dakota in Ogden, Utah. Troy Huff added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jamal Webb had 11 points and six assists.<\/p>\n

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) – The flailing Cleveland Cavaliers have fired general manager Chris Grant. With the 16-33 Cavs sliding further toward the bottom in another disappointing season, owner Dan Gilbert decided to make the move a day after Cleveland was beaten by an injury-ravaged Los Angeles Lakers team that finished the game with just five players.<\/p>\n

Cleveland’s only win in their last nine games was against the Milwaukee Bucks, who have the worst record in the NBA.<\/p>\n

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) – The Baseball Hall of Fame says slugger Ralph Kiner, one of the first and greatest post-war home run hitters, has died at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 91.<\/p>\n

Kiner hit 369 home runs during his 10-year career from 1946 through 1955, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won or tied for the National League lead in homers in each of his first seven seasons.<\/p>\n

After finishing up as a player, Kiner became a popular broadcaster with the New York Mets for more than a half-century. He even worked a handful of games last year.<\/p>\n

SOCHI, Russia (AP) – In just a couple of hours some 3,000 athletes from around the world will be marching in to the Olympic stadium in Sochi, Russia, for the opening ceremony of the Winter Games. The show director says the ceremony will focus on Russia and Olympic ideals of sportsmanship and achievement. He says a Russian pop duo called Tatu (like tattoo) was chosen to perform because its upbeat dance song will motivate athletes. But critics say the pseudo-lesbian pop duo is a gimmick in a country that has a law banning gay “propaganda.”<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) – An army of workers and volunteers is fanning out around the United States, trying to enroll young and healthy people in health insurance now available through President Barack Obama’s signature law. The effort is run largely by groups with close ties to the White House. More than any other group, participation from young and healthy people is needed to balance the higher costs of insuring older, sicker people.<\/p>\n

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (AP) – A resort in the Catskill mountains is closing for a week because of a virus that’s sickened hundreds of guests and employees. The Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz will close at 1 p.m. today, and it’s expected to reopen on Feb. 14. And Mohonk has hired a disaster-remediation company to sanitize the resort, which can accommodate 600 guests. A resort spokeswoman says several hundred guests and staff started getting sick last Friday.<\/p>\n
