Science Teachers At VCSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/VCSUbest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6633\" alt=\"VCSUbest\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/VCSUbest-300x202.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/VCSUbest-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/VCSUbest-259x175.jpg 259w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/VCSUbest.jpg 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>From VCSU<br \/>\nThe North Dakota Science Teachers Association (NDSTA) will hold its annual spring conference in Rhoades Science Center on the Valley City State University campus Feb. 20\u201322.<\/p>\n<p>The 2014 conference theme is \u201cNext Generation Science: Standards, STEM, Sustainability.\u201d Billed as \u201cfor teachers, by teachers,\u201d the conference includes a host of presentations exploring best practices in science teaching and learning, with hands-on demonstrations of curricular resources.<\/p>\n<p>About 100 K\u201312 science teachers from throughout the state will participate in the event, chaired by Don Hoff, professor of science at VCSU.<\/p>\n<p>The conference kicks off with a social at the President\u2019s House Guest Inn on the VCSU campus on Thursday evening, Feb. 20, and continues with full days of activities and presentations on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21\u201322.<\/p>\n<p>A banquet Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the VCSU Student Center Cafeteria will feature keynote speaker Sam Stier, presenting on biomimicry\u2014the study and application of natural elements, models and systems to solve human problems\u2014in an address titled \u201cEnriching STEM Education with Nature\u2019s Genius.\u201d Stier is founder and director of Learning with Nature, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching children\u2019s educational experience and STEM engagement through nature-based curricula.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote address is sponsored by KLJ, a multidisciplinary engineering, surveying and planning firm.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota educators will make presentations on a wide variety of topics centered on the conference theme; VCSU faculty and staff presenters on the conference program include:<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Wes Anderson, adjunct lecturer and planetarium director, with a planetarium program, \u201cFinding Polaris II\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Jerzy Bilski, assistant professor of science, presenting \u201cAn Environmentally Friendly Approach to the Utilization of Coal Combustion Residues\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Gary Ketterling, assistant professor and coordinator in the Great Plains STEM Education Center, presenting on \u201cPicture-Perfect Science Lessons and NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards)\u201d and \u201cExploring the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in Your Classroom\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Bonita Roswick, education specialist at VCSU\u2019s Prairie Waters Education and Research, presenting \u201cNorth Dakota River Watch\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Casey Williams, assistant professor of science, presenting \u201cThe Pickled Fish Project\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Jamie Wirth, instructor and chair of the mathematics department, presenting \u201cSTEM: Building Math\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conference chair Don Hoff will also lead the North Dakota Association of Physics Teachers Meeting, held as part of the NDSTA conference, along with physics demonstrations and instructional ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The conference venue, Rhoades Science Center, recently underwent a $10.3 million renovation and expansion. It is home to the VCSU science and math programs, and the Great Plains STEM Education Center. The university\u2019s technology services offices and facilities are also housed in the building, as is VCSU\u2019s collaborative nursing program with Dakota College at Bottineau.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent possible, the design and construction of the Rhoades addition and renovation followed standards set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council\u2019s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and the building has received LEED certification.<\/p>\n<p>NDSTA Spring Conference events are offered to registered participants only; online registration and a complete NDSTA conference program is available for download in PDF format at www.ndsta.k12.nd.us.
