LOWS AROUND 10 BELOW.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) The Buffalo City Tourism Grant\/Executive Advisory Board met Friday at the CSi Technology Center, at Historic Franklin School, and approved three grant requests.<\/p>\n<p>Following a presentation by National Buffalo Museum Director Kim Penrod the board approved $3,675 to expend on White Cloud Days, July 4-6, 2014. She said most of the dollars will go toward advertising.<\/p>\n<p>She requested $14,130 for summer of 2014 staffing.<\/p>\n<p>She said the staffing salary increase from $13,682 stems from an increase in the hourly wage this summer for three employees, adding the hours open this summer will be 8-a.m., to 8-p.m. seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.<\/p>\n<p>Buffalo City Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund recommended $14,229 dollars, which was approved.<\/p>\n<p>The board also approved a request for 2014 staffing of Fort Seward, represented by Dale Marks, in the amount of $9,500. He said the staff consists of two interpreters, Tom Norman and Jane Norman.<\/p>\n<p>In other business, board member Tenea Clocksene update marketing, including progress on re-branding Buffalo City Tourism. She said three of four profile options provided by Red Plum Media have been chosen for further consideration. An announcement is planned at the Annual Meeting on March 24,2014.<\/p>\n<p>After meeting in closed Executive Session, the board voted an increase in the annual salary of Searle Swedlund to $51,700 plus a percentage increase in his benefit package.<\/p>\n<p>Four board members conducted a job performance review, and in a range of 1-3 Swedlund\u2019s score was 2.175.<\/p>\n<p>The board also approved adding the James River Rodeo to the Site Advisory Board, and to add Mitzi Hagar to the open position on the Executive Board, coming from the Tourism Full Board.<\/p>\n<p>The board also discussed, in the near future, to recognize the late Harold Newman, and his legacy to tourism in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bismarck (CSi) The Jamestown High School Number One team won the state LifeSmarts championship and will be representing North Dakota in the national competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Jamestown High School\u2019s Number Two team was second, Kindred High School took third.<\/p>\n<p>The Jamestown high school students will represent the state in the national championship, which will to be held April 26-29, 2014 in Orlando, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday\u2019s (Feb 21, 2014 Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 three students, Kelsey Becker, Jessica Vandal, and Alex Igl said a silent auction fundraiser to raise dollars for the trip is set for Tuesday February 25, 2014, at Jamestown High School\u2019s Jerry Meyer Arena starting at 4-p.m., and continuing through the boys and girls basketball games.<\/p>\n<p>The State Champion team members include: Captain, Kelsey Becker, Andrew Briedenbach, Zach Fossen, Alex Igl and Jessica Vandal.<\/p>\n<p>LifeSmarts involves students studying and competing in five areas of interest that they lean and train for competition with on line quizes.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown High School team coach Marchel Krieger says &#8220;LifeSmarts is a very valuable program that I wish more schools could take part in and experience. We are very proud to have the chance to represent North Dakota at the national competition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2013 The warden of the North Dakota State Penitentiary is quitting after managing the Bismarck prison for nearly four years.<\/p>\n<p>Robyn Schmalenberger\u2019s last day on the job is Thursday. She submitted her resignation last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Schmalenberger has worked in corrections for more than 20 years. She began as a probation officer and was involved in the organization of Fargo Drug Court in 2002 and the development of re-entry programs in Bismarck and Fargo in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Schmalenberger was promoted to state director of transitional facilities in 2007. She took over for Tim Schuetzle (SHOOT\u2019-zuhl) as warden in April 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation director Leann Bertsch says Schmalenberger guided the prison through a stressful time during a $64 million renovation project, which is mostly completed.<\/p>\n<p>Bertsch also informed staff that <strong>James River Correctional Center Warden Don Redmann<\/strong> will serve as interim warden of the State Penitentiary and help Bertsch identify potential candidates for the job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Redmann also will fill the newly created position of director of facility operations,<\/strong> reporting directly to Bertsch and overseeing and supervising the wardens, she stated in the email.<\/p>\n<p>Redmann has worked for the department for almost 30 years, including nearly 16 years as warden of the James River facility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota leads the nation for well-being and South Dakota is second.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s according to a survey of 178,000 Americans nationwide that takes a look at the physical and emotional health of the nation.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota tops the 2013 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index with an overall score of 70.4 out of a possible 100. South Dakota scored an even 70.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaii had held the top spot the four previous years.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota had been among the top 10 well-being states from 2009 to 2011 but slipped off the list in 2012. South Dakota was among the top 10 in well-being for the first time since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia and Kentucky had the two lowest well-being scores in 2013, for the fifth year in a row.<br \/>\nMINOT, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Residents of the Nedrose School District just east of Minot have decided to add a high school.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 unofficial results show an $18 million bond measure passing with 66 percent approval. Only 60 percent was required in Thursday&#8217;s vote.<\/p>\n<p>The district will move from K-8 to a full K-12 district. It will mirror a move approved late last year by voters in the South Prairie School District just south of Minot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In sports&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Semifinal matchups are set at the state high school boys&#8217; and girls&#8217; hockey tournaments in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n<p>On the boys&#8217; side, Bismarck is taking on West Fargo, and Grand Forks Central is squaring off against Minot at Ralph Engelstad Arena.<\/p>\n<p>In the girls&#8217; competition, Bismarck plays Grand Forks and West Fargo takes on Fargo South-Davies for the right to advance.<\/p>\n<p>The semifinals are Friday and the championship games Saturday. The games are being broadcast on North Dakota&#8217;s ABC affiliates, CSi 6, WDAY, Fargo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SOCHI, Russia (AP) \u2013 The men\u2019s hockey showdown between Canada and the United States didn\u2019t pack the punch that most were hoping for when the game began.<\/p>\n<p>Many viewed these two teams as the best in the tournament and fully expected a wild, heart-pounder similar to the gold medal game between the USA and Canada women the previous night.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Canadians, the defending Olympic champions dominated from start to finish with a cold, ruthless performance to win 1-0 and advance to the gold medal game.<\/p>\n<p>Canada put the Americans in a vise and wouldn\u2019t let them breathe, limiting their scoring chances and suffocating their offensive attack. Canada goalie Carey Price got the shutout, but he was rarely challenged. Jamie Benn got the only goal for Canada in a game that lacked many scoring chances for either side.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Benn scored in the second period, Carey Price made 31 saves, and Canada beat the United States 1-0 Friday night in the semifinals of the Olympic men\u2019s hockey tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadians will play Sweden in the gold medal game Sunday,\u00a0\u00a0which beat Finland 2-1 in the earlier semifinal at Bolshoy Ice Dome.<\/p>\n<p>After its first loss in Sochi, the U.S. will face Finland for bronze on Saturday.<br \/>\nThe Canadians are on the brink of their third gold medal in four Olympics, and they\u2019re guaranteed their first medals outside North America in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In world and national news&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>KIEV, Ukraine (AP) &#8211; Ukrainian lawmakers are asserting their newfound authority, hours after opposition leaders signed a deal with the embattled president. The parliament has voted to restore the 2004 constitution that limits presidential authority. It also fired the interior minister blamed for ordering a crackdown on protesters that left more than 100 dead in the capital this week. And lawmakers voted to free a former prime minister who has spent more than two years in jail for what supporters say are politically tainted charges.<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) &#8211; The White House is praising an agreement between Ukraine&#8217;s president and the opposition to end violence. Press secretary Jay Carney says the deal is consistent with what Washington was advocating, and it should be implemented immediately. Carney also says the U.S. commends the opposition leaders and remains ready to impose new sanctions if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) &#8211; President Barack Obama has met with the Dalai Lama, despite warnings from China that doing so would &#8220;inflict grave damage&#8221; on U.S.-China relations. China views the Tibetan spiritual leader as a separatist. The private meeting was held in the White House Map Room instead of the Oval Office, where visiting leaders are usually greeted in front of photographers. The Dalai Lama left the White House without speaking to reporters.<\/p>\n<p>KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) &#8211; An American has made Alpine skiing history as the youngest winner of an Olympic slalom gold medal. Eighteen-year-old Mikaela (mih-KAY&#8217;-luh) Shiffrin finished in a two-leg combined time of 1 minute, 44.54 seconds &#8212; about half a second faster than one of her childhood favorites, Marlies Schild (mahr-LEES&#8217; shild) of Austria. Another Austrian took bronze. Schriffin has now completed a full set of slalom honors: Olympic and world championship gold medals and a season-long World Cup discipline title. She turns 19 next month.<\/p>\n<p>BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) &#8211; Railroads that haul volatile shipments of crude oil have reached an agreement with U.S. transportation officials to adopt wide-ranging voluntary safety measures, after a string of explosive and deadly accidents. It calls for railroads to slow down oil trains through major cities, increase track inspections and bolster emergency response planning along the routes.
