Jamestown (CSi) The City of Jamestown is issuing a \u201cWater Service and Sewer Service Line freeze-up ADVISORY.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frost depths are approaching and exceeding six (6) feet of depth in some spots, and the City is receiving an increasing number of reports of water and sewer service line freeze-ups occurring in both residential and commercial properties in City Limits.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Reports of\u00a0frozen lines have come from \u00a0the northeast, the southwest, the center\u00a0 and the downtown areas\u00a0 of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

Reminding residents of the City of Jamestown that the service lines are their responsibility, the City offers the following advice to help prevent these freeze-ups:<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 Monitor your water temperature coming into the house by running the cold water continuously for about 3-5 minutes;<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 Using any commercially available thermometer, test the water temperature \u2013 holding the thermometer in the water stream until the temperature stabilizes;<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 If your water temperature is around 40\u00b0F or more, you should not have to take any special precautions unless you are planning on being away from home for several days;<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 If your water temperature is 38\u00b0F to 40\u00b0F or less, you should consider letting the water run in one sink of your home \u2013 a stream about the diameter of a pencil\/pen;<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 You may want to consider running the water and\/or having someone check on your house\/business if you are planning on being gone;<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 Regardless of the temperature of your water service, you should also monitor your basement floor drains and other low-lying access points to the sanitary sewer to make sure they are running as well.<\/p>\n

\uf0b7 If you should experience a freeze-up in the water or sanitary sewer service lines, please call one of the local plumbing firms to assist you in thawing out your service lines. Again, remember that by City Ordinance, the maintenance of these service lines are the responsibility of the home or business owner.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Homeowners should be periodically testing their water for weeks to come, into the spring, with \u00a0a month or two of lag time in how quickly the ambient air temperature\u00a0 affects the upper 4 to 6 or 7 feet of soil.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Commission has approved the Jamestown\/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC) in purchasing 320 acres of land adjacent to the Spiritwood Energy Park.<\/p>\n

The JSDC Board of Directors voted unanimously to recommend the purchase of the land and the Jamestown City Council authorized the purchase Monday.<\/p>\n

The commission\u2019s Tuesday authorization means the purchase can go through.<\/p>\n

In a separate motion, the commission stated it does not support the annexation of the land by the city of Jamestown or Jamestown Public School District.<\/p>\n

The JSDC intends to use the land for future industrial development, but until then, it will be rented out as farmland.<\/p>\n

The land, currently zoned for agricultural use, cost $6,000 per acre, for a total cost of about $1.9 million. Of that, the city of Jamestown will pay $1.74 million \u2014 90 percent of the cost \u2014 and Stutsman County will pay $193,500 \u2014 10 percent of the cost.<\/p>\n

Approved second and final reading of Ordinance No. 966, an ordinance enacting a \u201cblanket\u201d rezoning of properties within the l mile extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Valley City, Barnes County, North Dakota. Building Inspector Dave Andersen said all impacted have been notified by his office.<\/p>\n

Approved a Special Alcohol Beverage Permit until 1-a.m., for Boomer\u2019s Corner Keg on July 26, 2014, to serve alcohol on 3rd Avenue SW, Main Street to 2nd Street for the Deb Gabel Memorial Cancer Ride.<\/p>\n

City Commissioners discussed yearly employee performance evaluations. Commissioner Magnuson said the evaluations should be done annually.<\/p>\n

CITY ADMINISTRATORS REPORT<\/p>\n

David Schelkoph said 25% of the AMI meters have been installed, or 1,700. He added 46 days of electric load control were recorded this winter, with a saving of $120,000 per month. He reminded residents to expect more high utility bills with the unseasonable cold weather. He added that once the meters are read after being estimated, the next bills will likely be very high.<\/p>\n

He added the problem with frozen pipes continues with the depth of the frost line. He said some Valley City plumbers have gone to Jamestown to assist in thawing frozen pipes.<\/p>\n

CITY UPDATE & COMMISSION REPORTS<\/p>\n

City Attorney Myhre said a few more recodifications will be coming before the City Commission. He added another flood buyout agreement was completed on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

City Auditor Richter said the process of putting the items on line will be starting, following City Commission approval.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Nielson said she has been staffing the City\u2019s Welcome Booth at the NDWS.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Pedersen said, he and Mayor Werkhoven have met with representatives of the State Water Commission to look at the city’s preliminary flood control design.<\/p>\n

The meeting was shown live on CSi 68 followed by replays.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Regional Medical Center, received on line gifts of $10,910, with 68 donors, on February 13, 2014, Giving Hearts Day.<\/p>\n

Adding the matching $4,000 by Dakota Medical Foundation, and an additional $18,837.98 in matching funds from board members and donors, the total amount the JRMC received was $33,747.98.<\/p>\n

Held by the Dakota Medical Foundation. Giving Hearts Day was a 24 hour online fundraising event the benefits local businesses with matching funds of up to $4,000 by the Dakota Medical Foundation.<\/p>\n

The total of donations to Giving Hearts Day stood at $5,477,704 through more than 24,000 donations.<\/p>\n

In 2013, $3.68 million was raised for Giving Hearts Day from 16,989 donations.<\/p>\n

Jamestown Arts Center Director, Taylor Barnes says the arts center raised $5,082 from donations. as the arts center received a total of $9,082 from a $4,000 match donation the center received outside of Giving Hearts Day.<\/p>\n

She points out that the arts center found $4,000 in a match grant.<\/p>\n

The funds raised will go to the center\u2019s general fund.<\/p>\n

The Anne Carlsen Center\u2019s Chief Development Officer, Kirby, says ACC received more than $115,000 in donations on Giving Hearts Day from more than 460 individual donors, totaling $120,000, from 20 state, along with world-wide donations.<\/p>\n

The funds will be used for a variety of programs and services, including buying adaptive equipment and technology, with nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised to be used for programs and services at the Anne Carlsen Center.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have recovered a body from a semitrailer that burned at a Minot truck stop.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ward County Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Hubbard says authorities were called to the Flying J truck stop shortly before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Emergency officials found the semitrailer engulfed.

\u00a0DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – The principal of Trinity High School in Dickinson is accused of setting fire to the school.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say 30-year-old Thomas Sander is in custody on charges of arson and endangerment by fire, both felonies that carry a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney, and a home telephone listing for him could not be found. He has been principal for less than a year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police and fire officials are still investigating. Dickinson Catholic Schools President Steve Glasser says school officials plan to release a statement Wednesday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say William Anderson III was in possession of 1,000 rounds of ammunition. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anderson has several felony convictions on illegal weapons charges, including unlawful possession of explosions. He’s currently jailed in Jamestown.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A woman who once operated the state Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle office in Wahpeton has pleaded not guilty to a financial misconduct charge.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 72-year-old Catherine Muehler remains free after agreeing to appear in all future court dates. Her trial has not been scheduled.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Muehler can’t account for $100,000 owed to the state. She’s charged with felony misapplication of entrusted property, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Muehler’s attorney, Michael McCartney, couldn’t be reached.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A virus that has killed more than 4 million pigs in the U.S. in less than a year has been found in North Dakota.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota State University Extension Service swine specialist David Newman says a case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus, or PEDv, was confirmed in a swine herd in the eastern part of the state last week.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The virus was first found in the country in April 2013. The American Association of Swine Veterinarians says 25 states have now reported at least one confirmed case.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The virus causes severe diarrhea, dehydration and vomiting in pigs, and can be fatal. Newman says it can mean “serious economic losses” for producers. He’s urging producers to follow strict biosecurity procedures. That includes keeping barns, clothing and vehicles clean.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WASHINGTON (AP) – The Army Corps of Engineers plans to fund the final $6.3 million needed to complete the planning, engineering and design phase for the Red River diversion project.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The funding news came as President Barack Obama’s proposed 2015 budget did not include any funding for construction of the diversion. Lawmakers say that means they will have to work harder to keep the diversion project moving forward.

\u00a0WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – State officials plan to meet this week with the operator of the trailers found in western North Dakota with potentially radioactive filter socks. The Bismarck Tribune reports that RP Services based in Riverton, Wyoming remains under investigation for improper storage, handling and transportation of the filter socks. The filter socks are used to strain liquids in the oil production process and can become contaminated with naturally occurring radiation.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quissell succeeds Wayne Carlson, who has retired after 21 years in the Agriculture Department post.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quissell previously was a senior inspector in the state Meat and Poultry Inspection Program. In his new position, he’ll oversee the department’s livestock programs, including dairy and poultry inspection, auction and dealer licensing and bonding, livestock development, state meat inspection, livestock pollution prevention and feed registration.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quissell is a South Dakota native who graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in animal science. He joined North Dakota’s Agriculture Department as an inspector in 2007.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two mushers native to North Dakota are racing in the 42nd Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kelly Maixner was raised in Golva, and Ellen Halverson is formerly of the Thompson area. Both now live in Alaska.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome got underway Sunday. Maixner was in 46th place mid-Tuesday, after leading for a time Monday, and Halverson was last out of 68 remaining mushers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It’s the fourth Iditarod for Maixner and the fifth for Halverson. Maixner’s best finish is 30th and Halverson’s best is 47th. She has twice been given the Red Lantern Award, which goes to the last musher to successfully finish the race.
