GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A man stopped in North Dakota because
\npolice thought he was a suspect in a North Carolina attempted
\nmurder turned out to simply share one of the wanted man’s names.
\nU.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Pigg says the detained man “was all
\nclear.” The man had the same name as an alias used by the North
\nCarolina suspect.
\nThe detained man, who was driving a light blue van, crossed into
\nNorth Dakota at the U.S. border crossing at Pembina, N.D.,
\nprompting law enforcement to intercept. He was not identified.
\nDozens of vehicles were backed up in the southbound lanes on
\nInterstate 29 shortly after 11 a.m.<\/p>\n

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general’s
\noffice will not press charges against Stark County Sheriff Clarence
\nTuhy (TOO’-ee) for an alleged theft from a nonprofit that accepts
\ndonations for the needy.
\nTuhy has said the incident was an “honest mistake.” The state
\nBureau of Criminal Investigation says in a letter that the matter
\ndoes not warrant prosecution.
\nTuhy is under fire for allegedly being ineffective at his job
\nand creating a toxic environment for workers in his office. A July
\n24 hearing is scheduled on the County Commission’s request to have
\nthe governor remove him from office.
\nTuhy has declined comment. He said in a report the county filed
\nwith the governor’s office that he can be tough but that he also is
\nfair.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Republican U.S. House candidate Kevin Cramer has almost caught up to Democratic rival Pam Gulleson in their campaign fundraising race.
\nCramer’s campaign finance disclosure report shows he raised $276,000 in the last month. Since Cramer started his campaign last year, he’s collected almost $600,000 in donations.
\nGulleson’s Federal Election Commission report shows she raised about $123,000 during the last month. Her campaign has raised about $630,000 since it began.
\nGulleson has almost $380,000 in her campaign treasury now, while Cramer has about $273,000.
\nCramer defeated Brian Kalk last month in the North Dakota Republican primary for the party’s nomination to run for the U.S. House.
\nCramer says he’s been focusing since then on raising money to lessen Gulleson’s fundraising advantage. Gulleson did not have a Democratic primary challenger.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A North Carolina-based company wants to
\nbuild housing in Grand Forks that would be marketed to University
\nof North Dakota students.
\nCampus Crest Communities of North Carolina proposes 12
\nthree-story buildings that could house 600 tenants, just north of
\nthe Alerus Center and southwest of the UND campus.
\nCity planners have recommended the City Council give zoning approval for
\nthe project.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A proposed budget for North Dakota’s
\ncolleges includes $10 million to help ease the impact of oil
\ndevelopment in Williston and Dickinson.
\nThe presidents of Williston State College and Dickinson State
\nUniversity say the oil boom in western North Dakota is making it
\ntougher to find and keep employees.
\nThey say student housing is short and there are some security
\nconcerns because of the influx of new workers.
\nThe Legislature will have to decide whether to provide the
\nmoney. Williston State President Ray Nadolny says it would be “a
\ngreat start” for easing the campus impacts of oil development. He
\nsays he’d like to see more campus housing.
\nDickinson State President D.C. Coston says the money could help
\nraise wages and provide security improvements.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The new chancellor of North Dakota’s
\nuniversity system says he needs to double his office staff to
\nprovide oversight for the state’s public colleges.
\nHam Shirvani says the system’s central office staff now has 26
\nemployees. The Board of Higher Education supports his effort to add
\n30 new workers.
\nShirvani says they would include attorneys, finance and
\npersonnel specialists and people to make sure university system
\npolicies are being followed.
\nShirvani says the lack of central oversight has caused problems
\nwith inconsistent policies among North Dakota campuses.
\nHe says Dickinson State’s recent problems with a special
\nacademic program for Chinese students could have been avoided with
\nbetter supervision.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Retired Minnesota Viking Jim
\nKleinsasser (KLYN’-sahs-ur) headlines this year’s class of
\ninductees into the University of North Dakota Letterwinners
\nAthletics Hall of Fame.
\nKleinsasser spent all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Vikings
\nafter being a second-round draft pick out of UND in 1999. He
\nappeared in more games than any tight end in Vikings history. He
\nretired after last season.
\nThe Carrington native was a two-time NCAA Division II All
\nAmerica tight end while at UND in the late 1990s.
\nThe 2012 class also includes John Christen, a tennis and
\nwrestling standout in the 1980s, and Louise Ronnerman, a cross
\ncountry and track star in the 1990s. UND’s 1997 NCAA Division I
\nchampion men’s hockey team also is being inducted. The ceremony is
\nSept. 29.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s a milestone in the 30-year battle against
\nthe virus that causes AIDS. The Food and Drug Administration has
\napproved the first drug shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
\nThe pill, called Truvada, is a preventive measure for people who
\nare at high risk of acquiring HIV, such as those who have sex with
\ninfected partners.<\/p>\n

CAIRO (AP) – After weeks in a military hospital, ousted Egyptian
\nleader Hosni Mubarak has been returned to prison. A prosecutor says
\nMubarak’s health has improved from several weeks ago, when he was
\nreported to be on the brink of death. But others in Egypt see the
\nmove as a response to the belief that officials who were
\nsympathetic to Mubarak were exaggerating his health crisis to give
\nhim a more comfortable imprisonment.<\/p>\n

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) – Two American tourists have been freed
\nunharmed by their kidnappers in Egypt, along with their Egyptian
\nguide. The kidnapper says he turned the three over to security
\nofficials after he was promised that authorities were working on
\nthe release of his uncle. He’d been detained by Egyptian
\nauthorities on suspicion of drug possession.<\/p>\n

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Authorities in Iowa say they’ve
\nuncovered no significant evidence in the search for two missing
\ngirls, three days after their bicycles and a purse were found near
\na lake. Eight-year-old Elizabeth Collins and her 10-year-old
\ncousin, Lyric Cook-Morrissey, have been missing since leaving their
\ngrandmother’s house Friday afternoon. A sheriff’s deputy says
\nauthorities have been doing house-to-house searches around the
\nclock. He says it’s still considered a missing persons case.<\/p>\n

MIAMI (AP) – The author of the “Encyclopedia Brown” series of
\nchildren’s mysteries has died. Donald J. Sobol was 87. His series
\nfeatured amateur sleuth Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown, who would
\nunravel local mysteries with the help of his vast knowledge of
\nfacts great and small. The books, which were first published in the
\n1960s, became fixtures in classrooms and libraries nationwide and
