 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Patriot Guard\u2019s eighth annual Fallen Heroes Memorial and Honor Ride was held Saturday at the Jamestown Civic Center.<\/p>\n

There were about 300 people in atttendance.<\/p>\n

The memorial honored three North Dakota men who were killed in combat while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Sgt. 1st Class Darren M. Linde, of Devils Lake, and Spc. Tyler Orgaard, of Bismarck, who were killed in action on Dec. 3, 2012, when an improvised explosive device struck the vehicle they were riding in in southern Afghanistan. Both soldiers were assigned to the 818th Engineer Company (Sappers) of the North Dakota National Guard.<\/p>\n

Also honored was Marine Sgt. Michael Bitz, originally from Wishek, was killed in action on March 23, 2003, near Nasiriaya, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.<\/p>\n

A North Dakota Patriot Guard ride Captain, George Quigley, of Jamestown a says about 175 people were signed up for the honor ride, that took place after the memorial, with proceeds from the event going to other Patriot Guard events that honor those who died for the country.<\/p>\n

The families of all three men were present at the Fallen Heroes Memorial. The North Dakota Patriot Guard presented each family with a plaque honoring their soldier\u2019s or Marine\u2019s sacrifice and a painted portrait of their family member.<\/p>\n

The Patriot Guard also honored the Gold Star families from North Dakota. Gold Star families are the families of service members who have died in combat or in service to the country.<\/p>\n

The keynote speaker at the Fallen Heroes Memorial was Col. Giselle Wilz, a veteran of Desert Storm, who said one of the best ways to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the U.S. was to share their stories.<\/p>\n

\u3000<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society thanks the community for the donations made during the recent Open House on May 17, 2014.<\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the shelter\u2019s Assistant Animal Caretaker, and Assistant to the President, Jenny Hieb said a number of visitors stopped by and $500 in donations were received that day.<\/p>\n

She said the event was not officially a fundraiser, but rather was geared to make the community aware of the animals available for adoption at the shelter.
\nShe also thanked Dollar Tree for putting up a donation box for the benefit, and tanked Hugo\u2019s for, and additional have a donation box.<\/p>\n

The next event will be the Hogs for Dogs with the date in July to be announced.
\nDog volunteers are needed in the evenings, with duties such as cleaning kennels, feeding and socializing with the dogs. Volunteer applications are available at the shelter and online at www.jamesriverhumanesociety.org<\/b><\/a>. <\/b><\/b>or can call 252-0747 for more information.<\/p>\n

Othee donations needed include cleaning items such as laundry detergent, bleach, Pine-Sol, Mr Clean, etc.<\/p>\n

Currently the James River Humane Society has 14 dogs and 18\u00a0cats available for adoption.<\/p>\n

The shelter is open every day from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 5:30pm to 6:30 pm, located east of Jamestown on I-94 at Exit 262 (Bloom exit). Call 252-0747.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The university has set an Aug. 25 application deadline. A presidential search committee will review the applications. Top candidates will be forwarded to the state Board of Higher Education for consideration.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Current Valley City State President Steven Shirley is taking over as president of Minot State University in July. Vice President for Academic Affairs Margaret Dahlberg will oversee Valley City State until a new president takes office, likely in January.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a Mandan man faces drunken driving, fleeing and other charges after he crashed and rolled a stolen vehicle near a mobile home park.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mandan Police Lt. Rick Schaaf\u00a0says \u00a0the 36-year-old man was arrested Friday after a police chase.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Schaaf says the stolen vehicle entered a ditch near the mobile home park, causing it to flip.

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge has certified class action status for a lawsuit against a North Dakota-based custom-harvesting operation.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The complaint was filed in 2010 against Altendorf Harvesting in Minto by two brothers from South Africa, Peter and Andrew Murray. The Murrays say the company owes unpaid wages to them and dozens of other employees from other countries.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The class includes all nonsupervisory workers employed by the company under temporary work visas since Oct. 28, 2004. Trial is set for Sept. 22 in Fargo.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says an Oklahoma paving company has been fined for doing work in North Dakota without a contractor’s license.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem says company owner Sylvester Cooper of Spiro, Oklahoma, was fined $5,000 and ordered to repay $5,000 to a customer.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem says Spiro has now obtained his contractor’s license.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem says North Dakota gets an influx of paving companies that come to the state every summer looking for work. He says some are reputable companies but “many are fly-by-night operators who target rural communities, do poor quality work, and then flee the state before the complaints come in.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A canvassing board will have to decide whether to identify the vote count for candidates receiving write-ins in Minot’s mayoral election.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ward County Auditor Devra Smestad says identifying write-ins isn’t required if the outcome of an election wouldn’t be affected. According to state law, a write-in candidate can request a count only in a very close contest.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chuck Barney ran unopposed in the election last week and got more than 1,300 votes.
\n\u00a0

\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Health officials will address the state of immunization in North Dakota at an upcoming conference in Bismarck. The conference will address vaccine storage and handling, vaccine-preventable diseases in North Dakota and updated vaccine recommendations. The Bismarck Tribune reports the conference begins July 15th and is expected to attract at least 200 people.<\/p>\n

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – A Tioga teen is back home and in good health after receiving a heart transplant

\n17-year-old Bree Hanson was greeted at the Tioga airport this weekend with 111 balloons, or one for each day she was away from home getting a new heart.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hanson was placed on a waiting list for a new heart more than a year ago. She says she now feels better than ever after returning from a Minnesota hospital.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hanson says she wants to get back to doing “regular North Dakota stuff” like camping, fishing, riding ATVs and shooting guns with her boyfriend and father.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, at the Jamestown Civic Center, will hold the next inductions, with the Gala on Saturday June 21, 2014.<\/p>\n

Being inducted this year are Glenn Hansen, Jim LeClair, and Mike Podolak, receiving the Cliff Cushman Award.<\/p>\n

It begins at 5:30-p.m., with a social, and silent auction, followed by the banquet, and concluding with the Induction Ceremony at 7-p.m.<\/p>\n

A table of six to be located toward the front of the banquet area, may be purchased for $200, which includes six tickets, table signs, a bottle of wine, and a private dessert.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says it has paid more than $481,000 to counties in which it owns or leases land, $58,000 less than for the previous year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The payments are in lieu of property taxes. The payments for 2013 ranged from less than $100 in Emmons and Griggs counties to more than $52,000 in Sheridan County.
