(AP) &#8211; The top federal prosecutors in the Dakotas say that not enough people in the two states are getting the message about the threat of human trafficking and related crimes.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson from South Dakota and U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon from North Dakota are sponsoring a three-day conference next week in hopes of raising awareness of the issue.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Johnson says many people believe human trafficking originates overseas and don&#8217;t realize there are homegrown victims. He says his office has indicted 20 people in the last four years on human trafficking charges.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Purdon points to a single weekend in Dickinson, North Dakota, when 11 men were arrested when they believed they were going to have sex with teen girls. He says that shows there&#8217;s a market for human traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The North Dakota attorney general is warning of a phone scam involving customers of a Minot utility company.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wayne Stenehjem says some customers of Verendrye Electric Cooperative have received phone messages telling them there is an unpaid balance due and services will be disconnected unless payment was made immediately.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem calls it a &#8220;blatant attempt&#8221; by thieves to steal credit card numbers and personal information. He says that even though this particular scheme involves local customers, it&#8217;s not uncommon for scammers to pick a different business in North Dakota once warnings for one company are issued.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem says scam artists use random dialer equipment so people who numbers are on the &#8220;do not call&#8221; list still receive calls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Gov. Jack Dalrymple has asked President Barack Obama for a federal disaster declaration to help nine North Dakota counties and the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation recover from a series of torrential rainstorms that led to flooding in late June.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dalrymple is seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency funding for public infrastructure repairs in Benson, Bottineau, Divide, Eddy, McHenry, Mountrail, Pierce, Renville and Ward counties, as well as the reservation.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The storms dropped as much as a foot of rain in some areas. Damage to public infrastructure is estimated at a little more than $1 million. Dalrymple wants FEMA to cover 75 percent of that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakotans who want to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable adults can now do so online.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state Department of Human Services&#8217; Aging Services Division has launched a website to make it easier for people to report concerns. North Dakota is now one of five states using the online reporting form.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Michelle Gayette is the department&#8217;s vulnerable adult protective services administrator. She says the reporting system is for non-urgent concerns. She says anyone worries that a vulnerable adult is at imminent risk of serious injury or death should call 911.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Legislature last year passed a law requiring more than 20 different types of professionals to report possible abuse, neglect or exploitation of vulnerable adults.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota&#8217;s Transportation Department has opened the first four-lane segment of U.S. Highway 85 in the western oil patch.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 14-mile stretch between Watford City and Alexander was opened to traffic on Friday. It marks the completion of the first phase of the four-laning project.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The highway is being widened between Watford City and Williston, at a cost of $300 million. The country&#8217;s president is asking schools to consider extending the current school holiday until there is a national reassessment of the level of threat Ebola poses in Nigeria.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 TRENTON, N.J. (AP) &#8211; A New Jersey judge has ordered a teen who accused a man of rape to turn over access to her Facebook page. The case is another example of social media&#8217;s growing use in courtrooms and the resulting privacy concerns. The judge says he will privately review two weeks of Facebook postings for any comments related to the alleged rape before deciding whether any can be used in court. A prosecutor says the teen victim is willing to turn over her account information.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CLEVELAND (AP) &#8211; Members of the Republican National Committee have unanimously voted to hold the party&#8217;s 2016 national convention in Cleveland. That now puts pressure on the host organizing committee to come up with the $60 million it promised Republicans to cover some of the convention costs.
