Jamestown (CSi) With a slight drizzle, but no heavy rain Thursday evening, a large crow estimated in the hundres gathered in downtown Jamestown for the annual Block Party.<\/p>\n

Neither the threat of rain, or the University of Jamestown Jimmies playing at 7-p.m., at VCSU could hold down the crowd (See sports for the game results),<\/p>\n

About 100 booths consisting of businesses, churches and other organizations welcomed students and residents.<\/p>\n

Each year the the Block Party welcomes University of Jamestown freshmen to town and allows them to network with the community.<\/p>\n

The freshmen are required by the university to attend, however many upper class students participate as well.<\/p>\n

Co-Chairs and organizers of the Block Party are University of Jamestown Dean of Students, Gary Van Zinderen, and Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce, Excutive Lisa Hicks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says its officers will be out in force during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The agency is planning extra patrols, some of them focusing on alcohol violations, along with sobriety checkpoints in Burke, Cass, Ward and Williams counties. Troopers statewide will be working overtime hours.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Patrol says the goal is to enhance safety.<\/p>\n

The Stutsman County Sheriff\u2019s Office had received a $20,000 grant from the North Dakota Department of Transportation to cover overtime pay for deputies to patrol area roads and highways over the Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MAX, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a Bismarck man who died after rear-ending a payloader on U.S. Highway 83.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say 55-year-old Roger Steckler died Wednesday afternoon in the crash near Max.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Steckler was driving a van that rear-ended the payloader, which was traveling about 20 mph. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The driver of the payloader was taken to a Minot hospital with unspecified injuries.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Texas man who pleaded guilty to distributing chemicals that resulted in the synthetic drug deaths of two teens in the Grand Forks, North Dakota, area has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Charles Carlton, of Katy, Texas, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Fargo.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carlton pleaded guilty in March to three counts, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the chemicals sold by Carlton’s company, Motion Resources LLC, were manufactured into hallucinogens. They say they wound up in the hands of 18-year-old Christian Bjerk, of Grand Forks, and 17-year-old Elijah Stai, of Park Rapids, Minnesota.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They died within a week of each other in June 2012.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Probation for a man charged in a brutal beating on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has been revoked after authorities say he had contact with the victim on social media.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ryan Thunderhawk, of Fort Yates, is charged in federal court with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Witnesses say the victim was knocked unconscious three separate times in the July 6 attack. The woman suffered a broken nose and several facial fractures.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Thunderhawk violated two terms of his parole. Court documents show he admitted to sending messages to the victim on Facebook, and he was discovered with synthetic marijuana in his possession.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thunderhawk was ordered to be held in jail. Trial is set for Oct. 28.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Spell is accused of killing 43-year-old Sherry Arnold during an attempted abduction as the high school teacher and mother of two was jogging in Sidney in January 2012. Her body was found more than two months later in North Dakota.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Richland County prosecutors dropped their pursuit of the death penalty for Spell after experts testified he has a mild mental disability.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) sent a letter to CEO E. Hunter Harrison on Thursday. The Democratic senator says last week the railway reported being behind somewhere from 200 to 2,000 cars. The senator says the company reports being behind around 50 cars this week.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She says Canadian Pacific is making grain elevators cancel most of their open orders, not fulfilling more requests.

(AP) – Airman from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota who fly and work on B-52 bombers say they’ve learned a lot from their counterparts at Ellsworth Air Force Base who fly B-1 bombers. Eight B-52s and about 300 airmen from Minot have been based at Ellsworth this summer. A $67 million runway upgrade at Minot is expected to wrap up by the end of September.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – More than half a million bee colonies have been registered in North Dakota this year, a record for the state.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State and industry officials credit more beekeepers, a better attempt to register colonies and a unique effort to help beekeepers and landowners live in harmony.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says 221 beekeepers have registered 510,000 colonies this year, compared to 205 beekeepers registering 482,500 colonies last year. More than 12,200 hive locations have been registered, compared to 11,000 last year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Goehring says that at the same time, his office is getting fewer landowner complaints about bee colonies.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota last year became the first state to develop a formal plan to help beekeepers and landowners resolve differences. North Dakota Beekeepers Association President Will Nissen says he thinks it’s working.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BOWMAN, N.D. (AP) – Officials are starting construction on a $28 million hospital and clinic in the southwestern North Dakota town of Bowman. The current Southwest Healthcare Services facilities were built in the 1950s. The new 60,000-square-foot structure will more than double the size of the existing hospital and clinic by late 2016.<\/p>\n

Vikings quarterback Kurtis Walls\u00a0threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns.<\/p>\n

Freshmen receiver, Antoine Griffin, netted158 yards and two touchdowns.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Roughriders released Dressler early this year to give him the opportunity to sign with an NFL team, but it didn’t work out. The Kansas City Chiefs released Dressler on Monday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dressler has played six seasons with the Roughriders, topping the 1,000-yard receiving mark five times and being named a CFL All-Star twice. He also was the CFL’s rookie of the year in 2008 and won a Grey Cup championship with the team last year.
