FARGO (CSi) On Friday, October 3, 2014, the North Dakota Highway\u3000Patrol will conduct a sobriety\u3000checkpoint and alcohol saturation in Stutsman\u3000and\u3000Logan<\/strong> counties to deter impaired driving by using high visibility enforcement. A sobriety checkpoint will be held from\u30008-10 p.m.<\/p>\n

This year,\u3000approximately 46 percent of fatal crashes have been alcohol-related.\u3000 The Highway Patrol is reminding the public to plan ahead.\u3000Call a taxi or designate a driver if you plan to drink.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Secretary of State Al Jaeger is encouraging voters in North Dakota to use a state website to find information about the upcoming general election.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jaeger says the website www.vote.nd.gov<\/a> has information about polling locations and hours, the full text of each of the eight measures on the ballot and details about candidates for statewide, legislative and judicial positions.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jaeger says sample ballots, voter identification requirements and absentee voting information are also available at the website.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The election is Nov. 4.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0SARTELL, Minn. (AP) – The North Dakota State University student found slain in Moorhead has been laid to rest as authorities search for his killer.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About 1,250 mourners attended a funeral Mass for 18-year-old Thomas Bearson on Monday morning at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in his hometown of Sartell.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The St. Cloud Times reports family and friends remembered Bearson’s humor, caring personality and love for athletics.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bearson’s body was found Tuesday outside a recreational vehicle store in Moorhead. The Ramsey County medical examiner’s office says Bearson died as the “result of homicidal violence.”
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say Bearson had last been seen at a party early on Sept. 20 in Fargo, North Dakota, about six blocks from his dorm. NDSU officials are encouraging students to walk with others on and off campus at night.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Three women have been arrested in Grand Forks in connection with recent pharmacy burglaries in Hillsboro and Larimore.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Grand Forks County sheriff’s department says the stolen narcotics have a street value of nearly of $50,000.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The women were arrested when law enforcement executed a search warrant at a home. Authorities say they seized various items including drug paraphernalia and narcotics believed to have come from the burglaries.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The women are 35-year-old Jodi Olson, 18-year-old Alexis Littlewind and 29-year-old Amanda Peterson. They have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit burglary.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Olson and Littlewind are also facing multiple counts of possession of a control substance with intent to deliver, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
\n\u00a0

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Wyoming man accused in a fatal hit-and-run in the North Dakota oil patch hub of Williston has been sentenced to time served and two years of probation.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 David Krause, of Alpine, Wyoming, reached a plea agreement with prosecutors under which a felony manslaughter charge was reduced to misdemeanor reckless endangerment. He pleaded guilty Friday and his trial scheduled for this week was canceled.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Krause was charged in the December 2013 death of 31-year-old Anthony Scoggins outside a bar. Judge Joshua Rustad said the incident was “nothing more than a tragic accident.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Detective David Peterson\u00a0 says “law enforcement does not agree.”

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple says he has plans for major improvements to North Dakota’s park system and statewide conservation enhancements.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dalrymple is slated to unveil his plan on Monday at the state Capitol in Bismarck.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The GOP governor’s plan comes as conservation advocates are pushing a measure for a bigger slice of North Dakota oil tax revenues for a fund to benefit water, wildlife and parks projects.\u00a0 The measure will appear on the November ballot.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Backers want 5 percent of the state’s oil extraction taxes for the fund. That would raise about $260 million during the 2015-17 budget period. The current fund is capped at $30 million.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Opponents say they worry that a bigger fund would take away from other critical needs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – A community center that has been in the works for nearly a decade in the western North Dakota oil patch city of Killdeer will be reality in a matter of weeks.

\nWork is wrapping up on the $3.3 million High Plains Cultural Center along N.D. Highway 22.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The facility will have meeting rooms, a gymnasium\/banquet area and a walking track. It will be available for events ranging from oil company training meetings to wedding receptions.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The committee raising money to pay off the project loan expects to come up about half a million dollars short. Officials plan to hold a fundraising campaign and also ask the Dunn County Commission to chip in.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Scandinavian culture and heritage will be on display in Minot this week as the city hosts the 37th annual Norsk Hostfest.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The event is billed as the largest Scandinavian festival in North America. Each year it draws about 60,000 people from around the world for food, music and other entertainment.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This year’s Hostfest is Tuesday through Saturday at the State Fairgrounds.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The festival also includes the annual inductions into the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame. This year’s honorees are legendary Tonight Show bandleader Doc Severinsen, pop singer Bobby Vee and Sig Hansen, star and technical adviser of the documentary TV series “Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery Channel (CSi 19). They’ll be inducted during a ceremony on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2013 The Minnesota Twins have fired manager Ron Gardenhire after 13 seasons that included at least 92 losses in each of the last four years.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The move was made Monday, ending the second-longest active tenure in the major leagues behind Mike Scioscia of the Angels.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gardenhire played an integral role in the franchise\u2019s renaissance, guiding the Twins to their first of six American League Central division titles in 2002 in his first season on the job. But Gardenhire\u2019s teams only got out of the first round once in those six trips.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gardenhire had one year left on his contract.<\/p>\n

He was named American League manager of the year in 2010 and guided the Twins to six American League Central Division titles, including an ALCS appearance in 2002.<\/p>\n

\u00a0General Manager Terry Ryan says Gardy has been offered another position in the organization, and its up to Gardy if he decides to accept the position or look elsewhere.<\/p>\n

The Twins said they will begin immediately searching for a new manager, internally and externally. The coaching staff will be determined by the new manager in conjunction with general manager Terry Ryan.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has a new chief of wildlife.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Director Terry Steinwand has appointed 15-year department employee Jeb Williams as the new head of wildlife. Williams will succeed Randy Kreil, who announced his retirement in August.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Williams has been the assistant wildlife chief since 2011. He has also held the positions of biologist and wildlife resource management supervisor.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Williams is a native of Beach. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and resource management from Dickinson State University.<\/p>\n

This, after their use of tear gas brought tens of thousands of additional people to the streets, in an unprecedented show of civil disobedience. The protesters are demanding that China grant genuine democratic changes to the former British colony.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 UNITED NATIONS (AP) – Syria’s foreign minister says his government is satisfied with the U.S.-led bombing campaign against the Islamic State group. It’s a situation in which Damascus is aligned with Western and Arab opponents in fighting the same enemy. The foreign minister says the U.S. doesn’t tell Syria ahead of time about every airstrike, but that “it’s OK.” He spoke as U.S.-led coalition airstrikes targeted towns in northern and eastern Syria controlled by the Islamic State group, including one strike that Syrian activists said hit a grain silo and reportedly killed civilians.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 HOUSTON (AP) – A jury has sentenced a Texas cancer researcher to 10 years in prison. She was convicted of poisoning her colleague, who was also her lover, by lacing his coffee with a chemical found in antifreeze. He survived the poisoning. Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo was convicted Friday of aggravated assault.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NEW YORK (AP) – A grand jury has begun deciding whether there should be criminal charges in the case of an unarmed man who died after being put in a chokehold by New York City police. Police union officials said the grand jury began hearing evidence today in the death of Eric Garner. A medical examiner found that a banned chokehold used by a police officer contributed to Garner’s July death on Staten Island. The death was ruled a homicide.

According to a survey released by Bankrate.com, those fees rose by 5 percent over the past year.
