Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce has its new Executive Director on board.<\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 Becky Thatcher-Keller said she started her position with the Chamber on September 16, 2014.<\/p>\n

Becky said her previous professional experience before coming to the Chamber has been in community economic development as an economic developer, in the region, for over 20 years.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining the Chamber, she was with the South Central Dakota Regional Council office in Jamestown, with the Small Business Development Center Office for the past two and a half years.<\/p>\n

She was also a SCDRC board member for several years.<\/p>\n

She was also the economic developer for Cooperstown, and the economic developer for McIntosh County.<\/p>\n

Ms. Thatcher-Keller succeeds Lisa Hicks, who has taken a medical leave of absence.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown community is invited to help children in other countries who are affected by war, poverty, disease or disaster through the Operation Christmas Child shoebox project.<\/p>\n

The project has volunteers filling shoeboxes with personal hygiene items, school supplies, small toys, hard candy, bars of soap, notebooks, coloring books, wash cloths, appropriate-size T-shirts and other items.<\/p>\n

Items<\/p>\n

NOT<\/strong> accepted in the shoeboxes are candy that can melt, liquids, shampoo, medications, breakable items and war-related toys.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Properly sized boxes are available at Temple Baptist Church in Northeast Jamestown. Volunteers can also use a normal shoebox, or pack items in a reusable plastic bin that is the size of a shoebox, which would also be considered a gift.<\/p>\n

Fill a shoebox for about $15 to $20.<\/p>\n

packing party on Sunday Oct. 26, 2014 at Temple Baptist Church.<\/p>\n

Volunteers can drop off packed shoeboxes<\/p>\n

during collection week Nov. 17-24, 2014, at Temple Baptist Church, 1200 12th Ave. NE.<\/p>\n

The shoeboxes should be marked for boys or girls ages 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14. The boxes will go to Bismarck, and from there they go to Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, the shoeboxes are inspected to make sure items are appropriate and then shipped to other countries. It costs $7 to send a box to another country, and people can include that amount with the shoebox if they choose to.<\/p>\n

People can follow their shoeboxes online by registering at the Operation Christmas Child website Samaritanspurse.org\/operation-christmas-child\/follow-your-box.<\/p>\n

If someone chooses to follow a shoebox, he or she can pay $7 online and print off a bar code to track the gift. Otherwise, people can enclose a check for $7 with the shoebox. Special shoeboxes with the Operation Christmas Child logo and brochures are available at the church or by calling David Patzer at 320-9789<\/p>\n

The project is organized by Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and nondenominational evangelism organization.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – About 40 North Dakota Army National Guard soldiers will return to the U.S. today after a yearlong deployment in Kosovo.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The soldiers are members of the Guard’s Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment that is based in Bismarck. The soldiers will arrive at Fort Hood, Texas, where they will spend up to two weeks before returning to North Dakota.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Guard says the soldiers supported an international peacekeeping mission. The unit operated Black Hawk helicopters as part of a task force that conducts military peace support operations in Kosovo.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota aviators also provided air transport for U.S. and NATO Forces, including training and assistance to the Kosovo Security Forces.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Informational meetings are scheduled around North Dakota this month to educate farmers about two crop coverage programs in the new federal farm bill.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The free meetings deal with the Agricultural Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs. They’re being hosted by the state office of the federal Farm Service Agency and the North Dakota State University Extension Service.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – More than 250 Bismarck students and teachers from two public high schools will receive instruction in suicide prevention starting Monday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The training for Bismarck High School and Century High School students and teachers is being headed by a group called Sources of Strength.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Organization spokesman Cody Sletten says students will participate in activities and games aimed at preventing suicide.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bismarck High School students will receive the training Tuesday. Century High School students will participate on Wednesday. Twenty teachers from each school will attend a training event on Monday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s top federal prosecutor is the alumnus of the year at North Dakota State College of Science.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon received an associate degree in liberal arts from the Wahpeton school in 1989. He earned a president’s scholarship and was on the president’s honor roll during his tenure at NDSCS.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Purdon went on to attend Minnesota State University Moorhead and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1991. He attended law school at Hamline.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 President Barack Obama nominated Purdon to the post of U.S. attorney on Feb. 4, 2010. Purdon was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 5, 2010. He is North Dakota’s 18th U.S. attorney.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota elementary school is teaching its students how to prepare for entering the workforce.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Lincoln Elementary School are able to apply and interview for age-appropriate jobs at the school.\u00a0 Students have signed up for positions such as box top manager, lost and found manager, morning recess helper, morning library helper and new student tour guide.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The purpose is to give students the opportunity to feel more connected to their school.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Most of the participating students work morning shifts three times a week, but the school tries to be flexible with students and their schedules. Nearly 30 students currently hold jobs at the school, and many are still applying.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The school’s student job project began in September.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But top-end man camps in North Dakota’s sprawling oil patch resemble luxury overseas military bases and function almost like hotels. Guests enjoy all-you-can-eat buffets, private quarters and housekeeping services. Some even have saunas.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Barry Roman is a founder of Reliant Asset Management. He says big oil companies have a lot of money and just want everything taken care of for their workers.

\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota this week is opening an office where students can get a variety of services in one location.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The university is holding a grand opening ceremony Tuesday for its One-Stop Student Services office in the Memorial Union on campus.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Students will be able to register there for classes, review grades, accept financial aid awards, pay bills and conduct other business.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The office will be staffed by workers who are cross-trained to help students resolve issues related to academic records, registration, financial aid, parking and student accounts. It’ll be open each weekday.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WISHEK, N.D. (AP) – Cabbage is king in the German-Russian town of Wishek.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The town about 110 miles southeast of Bismarck claims to be the world’s sauerkraut capital. And since 1925, the town of about 1,000 people has held a festival each fall celebrating the chopped fermented cabbage.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This year’s annual Sauerkraut Day is slated for Wednesday at the city’s civic center. Along with sauerkraut, wieners, mashed potatoes, cheese, coffee and water will be served.\u00a0

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The event began in 1925 when free wieners and sauerkraut were first served by business owners who wanted to thank customers for their patronage.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The school late last month suspended head football coach Merle Johnson indefinitely after reporting rules violations to the National Junior College Athletic Association. Officials said in a statement that the violations had to do with ineligible players.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Athletic Director Stu Engen\u00a0says \u00a0the NJCAA has ruled the Wildcats must forfeit four wins but will still be eligible for postseason play.

Dickinson\u00a0 (Dickinson Press)\u00a0\u00a0 The Dickinson State University Blue Hawks (3-3, 1-0 NSAA) \u00a0beat the University of\u00a0 Jamestown \u00a0Jimmies 35-17 for its homecoming game on Saturday at the Biesiot Activities Center.<\/p>\n

Though Saturday\u2019s game was nonconference, it was the first time DSU and Jamestown (1-4, 1-1 NSAA) \u00a0met as North Star Athletic Association opponents. It was also the 76th meeting between the two teams. The Blue Hawks leads the series 42-32-2<\/p>\n

On the final drive of the half with 25 seconds left, DSU senior wide receiver JT Keith had a sliding catch into the endzone for a four-yard TD. The Blue Hawks took a 14-3 lead into halftime. That was the momentum changer for DSU.<\/p>\n

DSU enters its bye week on a high note as it\u2019s the first time since the 2010 season the team is at the .500 mark.<\/p>\n

The Blue Hawks \u00a0travel to face top conference team Valley City State (5-1, 2-0 NSAA) in a NSAA game at 2 p.m. Oct. 18.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Jimmies are back on the road Saturday, traveling to Madison, S.D., to face Dakota State.<\/p>\n

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The Valley City State University football team overcame a
\nsloppy start on Homecoming Saturday to roll over Waldorf College, 58-26, for their
\nfourth straight win.<\/p>\n

The Vikings improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play after the Homecoming
\nvictory in Valley City. VCSU sits alone in first place atop the North Star Athletic
\nAssociation.<\/p>\n

A pair of Viking seniors had the best days of their careers Saturday to lead the
\nViking offense. Senior tight end Jake Miller set career highs with nine catches for
\n120 yards and two touchdowns. Senior running back Ian Keller had 12 carries for 136
\nyards and a score.<\/p>\n

The Vikings led 10-0 before Waldorf rallied to tie at 10-10 at the end of the first
\nquarter. VCSU scored the next two touchdowns and led 24-13 at halftime. Waldorf got
\nto within 24-19 after Jamaar Crayton returned a fumble for a touchdown early in the
\nthird quarter. From there it was all Vikings as they scored the next 34 points to
\nrout the Warriors.<\/p>\n

Viking quarterback Kurtis Walls passed for 288 yards and five touchdowns. Junior
\nquarterback Josh Hansana rushed for 59 yards on eight carries. he also completed 5
\nof 9 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Antoine Griffin, Zach Johnson, Danny
\nHangaard, DeJhon Edwards and Trevor Goerts all added touchdowns for VCSU.<\/p>\n

The Vikings racked up 643 yards of total offense compared to 298 for Waldorf
\nCollege. VCSU had 279 yards rushing and 364 yards passing.<\/p>\n

Quarterback Isaac Sanchez rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown for Waldorf College.
\nHe also completed 13 of 23 passes fro 85 yards.<\/p>\n

VCSU lost three fumbles and threw one interception. Waldorf lost four fumbles and
\nalso threw one interception.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Vikings defensive tackle Tom Johnson has been arrested for disorderly conduct. Johnson was arrested by Minneapolis police early yesterday and released on bail. He was charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of trespassing. This is Johnson’s first season with the Vikings after three years with New Orleans.<\/p>\n

\u00a0GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The wife of Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr says he’s recovering from two strokes and a mild heart attack and is making progress in rehabilitation.
