\u00a0CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP) – Foster County leaders say the county is facing a difficult situation after five officials including the sheriff resigned at the same time.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Foster County State’s Attorney Paul Murphy\u00a0says \u00a0despite a few rumors circulating in the community, no former county official is under investigation and no charges are pending against any of the five individuals.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The county’s auditor, sheriff, deputy sheriff, clerk and deputy clerk resigned earlier this month. Murphy says the results of the November 4th election may have led to some of the resignations.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Auditor Teresa Risovi (RIZ’-uh-vee) lost her re-election bid, though her term wasn’t up until April. Election winner Casey Cables has agreed to assume the duties early.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Murphy says county officials are working hard to fill the open positions as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Foster County residents should see their tax bills in the mail next week.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Coborn\u2019s grocery store in Jamestown is is now Cash Wise Foods.<\/p>\n

The Store had been closed to convert to Cash Wise December 8-10, 2014, and reopened as Cash Wise at 6-a.m., on December 11th<\/sup>. The store hours will remain the same: open from 6 a.m. to midnight.<\/p>\n

During the down time the store was being updated with Cash Wise d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n

Officials say that prices will be lowered on thousands of items throughout the store.<\/p>\n

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 11-a.m.<\/p>\n

Store Manager Kyle Wensmann said “We will be the low price leader in Jamestown. Our customers have been asking for a Cash Wise store in Jamestown and we\u2019re responding to them by converting our Coborn\u2019s store into a Cash Wise. Coborn\u2019s Inc. has Cash Wise stores in several other markets in North Dakota, so by converting our store, we will be able to create more efficiencies that will allow us to provide our customers with great food at much lower prices.”<\/p>\n

The main difference between Cash Wise and Coborn\u2019s is that the top focus for Cash Wise is low prices, which result from operating efficiencies.<\/p>\n

All employees will keep their positions; no jobs will be lost and wages will not be impacted by this conversion, while some duties will be adjusted.<\/p>\n

Cash Wise Foods stores have been in operation in Fargo\/Moorhead and Bismarck for 26 years.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Within 30 miles of Jamestown there are 20 bodies of water, that have been stocked with fish by the State Game and Fish Department.<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Tourism Director Searle Swedlund said being an ice fisherman, he noted fishing opportunities at the reservoir, and other bodies of water, that attract visitors from around eastern North Dakota.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that a number of individuals are coming the Jamestown area for ice fishing from the Fargo and Bismarck area.<\/p>\n

He added, that the web site www.fishjamestown.nd.com<\/span><\/a><\/span> has more information.<\/span><\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2013 Two North Dakota brothers have been convicted of intentionally destroying potatoes to collect crop insurance payments.<\/p>\n

A jury found 50-year-old Aaron Johnson and 47-year-old Derek Johnson guilty of conspiring to receive illegal payments and giving false statements. Prosecutors said the men defrauded the federal government out of about $2 million.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said the brothers exploited the government\u2019s crop insurance program, meant to help farmers recover from losses due to naturally occurring events, including bad weather and the wet breakdown of inner potatoes after harvest. Prosecutors say that among other things, the brothers used chemicals to accelerate deterioration of their potatoes.<\/p>\n

But the brothers\u2019 attorneys argued that prosecutors had no hard evidence against their clients. Defense attorneys said the key witness was a convicted felon with no credibility.<\/p>\n

Testimony in the federal trial in Fargo lasted nearly two weeks. The case went to the jury shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police in eastern North Dakota say a man who was assaulted last month has died of his injuries.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Police have identified the man as 54-year-old Mario Perez. Fargo Police Interim Chief Dave Todd says Perez was new to the area and had no permanent address, which became a factor in the identification process.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Todd says Perez was physically assaulted Nov. 26. Emergency personnel located Perez after receiving a medical call. He was found unconscious with serious head injuries.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Todd says the case is now being investigated as a homicide. Police have not disclosed a motive.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are investigating a reported robbery at a Happy Joe’s pizza restaurant.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lt. Joel Vettel says a male entered the restaurant shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday and claimed that he had a gun, though he did not show a weapon.\u00a0 The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officers were using a police dog to search the area and using surveillance cameras to try to identify a suspect.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have charged a 43-year-old Bismarck man who they say strangled his girlfriend multiple times.

\n\u00a0 Angel Franceschi-Acevedo is charged with aggravated assault. Authorities say he strangled his girlfriend repeatedly over a two-day period.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bismarck police say the woman had significant bruises on her face, throat and arms. She tells them she lost consciousness and couldn’t breathe while being strangled.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He is being held on $2,500 bond. Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Lower oil prices are raising new financial worries in some states that rely on oil taxes to pay for roads and other government services.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With oil prices around a five-year low, budget officials in about a half-dozen states have begun paring back projections for a continued gusher of revenues. Spending cuts have started in some places, and more reductions could be necessary if oil prices remain at lower levels during the coming year.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How well the oil-rich states survive the downturn may hinge on how much they have saved and how greatly they depend on oil revenues for basic services.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Texas has diversified its economy since oil prices crashed in the mid-1980s and isn’t expressing concern. But Alaska remains heavily dependent on oil and will have to tap into savings.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chief justice is the 41st recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 81-year-old VandeWalle was re-elected to his fourth 10-year term in November. He is the longest-serving chief justice in state history and the oldest state chief justice in the nation.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VandeWalle is a native of Noonan and a University of North Dakota graduate. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1978 by former Gov. Arthur Link.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sanford AirMed is slated to be operating the twin-turboprop airplane in Dickinson beginning Monday. The airplane will have a crew of flight paramedics, flight nurses, mechanics and a pilot who will transport patients in western North Dakota.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The owners of the only toll bridge between Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota, have filed an appeal with the North Dakota Supreme Court over ownership of the structure.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A district court judge recently awarded ownership of the bridge to the cities of Fargo and Moorhead, after a 25-year lease agreement between the so-called Bridge Company and the cities expired.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owners argued that the bridge was still in debt and had a right to an extension to recoup losses before giving it up.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bridge Company attorney Randolph Stefanson\u00a0says he’s also filed a motion asking the district court to delay its order last month to turn over the bridge within 10 days.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Farm Rescue organization in the Northern Plains has hired a former Farmers Union leader as its first full-time development director.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fifty-four-year-old Dennis Wiese (wees) of Flandreau, South Dakota, is a former longtime president of the South Dakota Farmers Union and a former secretary and treasurer of the National Farmers Union. He farms with family members in eastern South Dakota and runs a consulting business.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota-based Farm Rescue helps farmers in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Montana struck by illness, injury or disaster. The nonprofit that plants and harvests crops with the help of volunteers, donations and business sponsors helped its 300th farm family this fall.

\n\u00a0Book \u00a0editor Bonnie Johnson says the society reprinted the guidebook because the second edition had been out of print for years and contained only black-and-white pictures. The third edition of “A Traveler’s Companion to North Dakota State Historic Sites” includes full color and GPS coordinates.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The book describes 68 historic locations, including state, local and federal sites and parks. The book’s 215 pages contain 180 contemporary and historic images and 111 site maps and directions.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Regulators said Thursday the Hess Bakken investments II company reported the spill about 10 miles north of Ray on Wednesday. Officials say vacuum trucks recovered about 650 barrels Wednesday and returned to finish the site cleanup Thursday.

The agreement was reached yesterday in San Diego at baseball’s winter meetings. They said Santana’s guarantee will include a $1 million buyout of a fifth-year option on the contract.

The Tigers obtained outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (YOH’-eh-nis\u00a0 SEHS’-puh-dehs) in a trade with Boston for pitcher Rick Porcello. The Tigers also got pitchers Alex Wilson and Gabe Speier in the deal. The Red Sox acquired Cespedes in July in the deal that sent Jon Lester to Oakland. Cespedes finished the year with a .260 average, 22 home runs and 100 RBIs. Porcello won 15 games this past season in 204-plus innings of work.
