Representatives from the organizations are working together to share the message about this giving opportunity in the community. Giving Hearts Day activities for the community will be at the Jamestown Arts Center on February 12, 2015 from 2 pm \u2013 6 pm.<\/p>\n

Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation jointly host this 24-hour online give-a-thon that has dramatically increased fundraising success by charities of North Dakota and western Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The seventh annual Giving Hearts Day on February in 2014, continued a tradition as a record-breaking fundraising phenomenon, shattering the previous year\u2019s donation total by 49 percent.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A West Fargo woman was killed and her husband injured in a three-vehicle crash on the city’s Main Avenue.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Chief Mike Reitan says the 50-year-old woman was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle driven by her 53-year-old husband that went out of control shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The SUV was hit by two cars and flipped onto its roof. No one in the cars was hurt.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The man driving the SUV was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. He and his wife were not immediately identified.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The chair of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education is stepping down ahead of her confirmation hearing for a second term.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kirsten Deiderich, of Fargo, faced a contentious re-appointment hearing from lawmakers unhappy with the board for several violations of open meetings laws and what some viewed as a lack of accountability among college administrators.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Diederich said in her resignation letter to Gov. Jack Dalrymple that the hearing would likely become a “forum for a power struggle.”
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A Senate panel consisting of three Republicans and two Democrats were slated to conduct a confirmation hearing for Diederich on Jan. 27.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Diederich was confirmed by senators in 2011 despite a recommendation from the review board that she not be confirmed.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Minot Republican Rep. Scott Louser is pushing the bill that would extend the moratorium until mid-2017.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The House Education Committee voted 9-2 to give the bill a “do-not-pass” recommendation on Wednesday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The measure is expected to go before the full House on Friday.

\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal officials say almost 15,000 people in North Dakota have signed up for health insurance during the current enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The second enrollment season for President Barack Obama’s signature health care law began Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday that 14,973 North Dakota residents had selected plans as of Jan. 9. The figure includes first-time sign-ups, people who personally re-enrolled and those who were automatically re-enrolled by insurers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Of those who signed up during the first month of the enrollment season, 88 percent received financial assistance, which lowered their premiums.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The proposed legislation would require high school students to pass a 100-question civics test starting in 2016 to graduate.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota’s first lady Betsy Dalrymple, educators and lawmakers unveiled the proposed bipartisan legislation last month.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dalrymple says North Dakota is one of the first states to introduce such legislation.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The proposal is backed by the Arizona-based Joe Foss Institute. Foss is a former South Dakota governor and won the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II. He died in 2003.<\/p>\n

CAIRO (AP) – Al-Qaida’s branch in Yemen says it planned and financed last week’s massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The paper’s first edition since the attack, which features a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad on the front page, quickly sold out Wednesday and the print run is being increased to 5 million. In an online video, a top commander of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula says the attack was in “revenge for the prophet” and warns of more “tragedies and terror” in the future. French and U.S. intelligence officials are casting doubt on AQAP’s claim.

Gunmen attacked the office of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, killing 12. Five other victims died elsewhere in Paris shootings.

Lawmakers approved legislation that would eliminate new deportation protections for millions and expose hundreds of thousands of younger immigrants to expulsion. The measure were attached to a $40 billion spending bill for the Homeland Security Department. Immediately after, the House voted to ease the landmark law that reined in banks and Wall Street after the financial crisis.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve says the U.S. economy has been growing at a moderate pace for the past month and a half. The Fed says business contacts in its 12 regional banking districts reported “modest” or “moderate” growth. Gains in sales of autos and other consumer products, increased factory production and a pickup in tourism in various parts of the country helped boost growth. Payrolls grew in a variety of sectors but significant wage gains were seen only by workers with specialized technical skills.

(AP) – State legislatures across the nation are considering an array of proposed policy changes prompted by last year’s police killings of unarmed people in Missouri, New York and elsewhere. Many seek to expand or mandate the use of cameras attached to officers’ uniforms. Others require more training for law officers and tighter limits on use of deadly force. Some lawmakers are looking to bolster protections for police in response to the sometimes violent protests and the recent shooting of two New York officers.
