\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The National Weather Service is cautioning residents of the Dakotas about heavy snow, wind and bitter cold as an arctic front moves through the region.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The agency has issued winter weather advisories for snow in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota and much of the eastern part of that state. Forecasters say about half a foot of snow could fall in some areas by the end of Wednesday, and gusty winds will blow it around.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota is getting lesser amounts of snow, but bitter cold is following on the heels of the precipitation. The weather service says wind chills overnight into Thursday morning will plunge into the minus 30s in all of western and central North Dakota. Forecasters say frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes under such conditions.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Mrs. North Dakota ~ America Pageant Weekend is planned for May 1st – 2nd, 2015.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Mary Schwartzkopf, Mrs. North Dakota-America 2011 who is the state pageant director will be leading the festivities with her staff as well as a few Sister Queens (former Mrs. NDAs’) during the pageant weekend. The final pageant show is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 pm, May 2nd at the Quality Inn & Suites in Jamestown, ND. This year’s venue is a Patriotic theme featuring Mrs. ND-America 2015, Eliza Potratz of Jamestown,\u00a0with her year’s theme\u2026’Walk to Remember’.<\/p>\n

Applications are still being accepted for local Titleholders to compete in the upcoming 2015 Mrs. ND-America Pageant. Deadline to compete is April 1st, with the final payment by April 11th, 2015. Mrs. ND- America state pageant is for married women that are at least 18 years of age – no age limit! She must be legally married at the time of competition, a North Dakota resident and a U.S. citizen. The 2015 Mrs. America Pageant is currently undergoing plans to be held in Russia. There are also plans for a First Runner-up National Pageant to possibly happen this summer 2015.<\/p>\n

The “First Runner-up Delegates” from every state will compete for the title, Mrs. National First-Runner-Up 2015. The winner of that pageant could possibly join the State Delegates when they compete for the Mrs. America 2015 title in Moscow and Sevastopol this September.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, member, Roger Caine said,
\njoining the Choralaires will be the Jamestown Boys\u2019 Choir, and the Jamestown High School Men\u2019s Ensemble.<\/p>\n

He added that traditional songs, and some new tunes will be performed.<\/p>\n

Tickets are adults $10 and students $4, and are available from any Choralaires member, a Boys Choir member, or at Looysen I Care on 1st Avenue, South, and at the door.<\/p>\n

The Choralaires will perform at the annual Big Sing in Rochester, Minnesota next month.<\/p>\n

Jamestown will host the Big Sing in 2016, with regional singers coming to town.<\/p>\n

Carrington (CSi) safewise.com <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>reports that Carrington is the safest city in North Dakota. Only cities with population over 2,000 residents were considered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carrington reported nearly no violent crimes in the city over the past year,<\/p>\n

The report says people who are moving to North Dakota are not doing so because of employment opportunities, but because the state is one of the safest in the nation.<\/p>\n

Other communities in order were Lincoln, Minot, West Fargo and Wahpeton.<\/p>\n

\u00a0TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – Three teenagers are dead after a crash on U.S. Highway 2 in Williams County. The Highway Patrol says the teens were in a westbound pickup truck that left the icy highway, crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes, where it collided with a semitrailer around 8:30 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation is criticizing President Barack Obama’s veto of a bill to approve construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chief sponsor Republican Senator John Hoeven (HOH’-ven) says the veto is not surprising but is unfortunate because it contradicts the “will of the American people.”
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The pipeline proposed by TransCanada Corporation would transport Canadian oil through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines to carry the oil to refineries along the Gulf Coast. TransCanada had also proposed to include Bakken crude from North Dakota in the pipeline.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp says seeing a bill fail that has been in the works for six years is “downright disappointing.”

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Canadian Pacific Railway says it has reduced a backlog of grain car orders, but BNSF Railway says it still has some late deliveries.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Grain elevators in North Dakota for months have struggled to get the rail cars they need to move harvested crops to market, due to delays caused by increased shipments of oil and other products. The U.S. Surface Transportation Board last October ordered railroads to give more details on shipping.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CP Rail says it finished last week with no grain shipments waiting in the U.S. Ten weeks earlier it had a backlog of 1,886 deliveries.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BNSF says it made further cuts to late deliveries, but as of Feb. 15 still had 1,482 late deliveries with an average wait of nearly 17 days. BNSF had a high of 4,469 late deliveries on Jan. 3.

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Ward County residents have overwhelmingly approved expanding a jail expansion project.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nearly 82 percent of the 3,808 voters in Tuesday’s election favored borrowing an additional $37 million to further expand the jail and renovate the courthouse. The money to pay off the bonds will come from an extension of an existing sales tax.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 County voters in 2012 approved about $40 million in bonding for a 50-cell jail expansion. But the number of inmates has grown along with the population in the region on the edge of the booming western oil patch, and state Corrections officials late last year ordered the county to address the jail’s crowding problems.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The jail expansion will now be 100 new cells, doubling its size. Construction is expected to begin in July and take two years.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan man accused of helping to hold a woman against her will last year has pleaded guilty.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thirty-six-year-old Donny Wagner entered guilty pleas to felonious restraint, aggravated assault and terrorizing on Tuesday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wagner is one of three people accused of holding the woman at a Mandan home for more than a day in February of 2014 and threatening to kill her and her children if she wouldn’t take the blame for drug charges against 43-year-old Timothy Beiers.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Bismarck Tribune reports that Beiers and Shanna Stenehjem have also pleaded guilty to their involvement.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Morton County Assistant State’s Attorney Gabrielle Goter said there was a plea agreement in place for Wagner.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man with a history of domestic abuse on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has pleaded guilty to assault.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Samuel Silk Jr. faces five years in prison on a federal charge of domestic assault by a habitual offender. Authorities say Silk has two prior convictions in tribal court.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Silk’s lawyers argued earlier that the habitual offender law should not apply because one conviction occurred after the date of the charge referenced in the federal complaint. That motion was withdrawn so the two sides could continue with plea negotiations.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.
\n\u00a0

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thirty-two-year-old Gerad Andre PayPay appeared in South Central District Court on Tuesday.\u00a0 He \u00a0faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sgt. Mark Buschena of the Bismarck Police Department says the girl’s mother reported the alleged assault Monday night.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PayPay is being held at Burleigh County Detention Center on a $15,000 cash-only bond.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Seventeen men have been charged with soliciting prostitution after responding to a sex ad posted by officers from the Bismarck Police Department.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to Sgt. Mark Buschena, each of the men responded to an online ad for an escort service and then showed up at a meeting spot with money to pay for sexual services. He says 65 people responded to the ad, but police were only able to arrest 17 of the interested individuals.
\n\u00a0
\n14 of the men are from North Dakota, while two are from Minnesota and one is from Rhode Island. Only a couple of the men have previous convictions related to soliciting prostitution.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All 17 men are scheduled to return to Bismarck Municipal Court on March 12.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Commissioner Adam Hamm says he remains “extremely concerned” about the security breach of the nation’s second-largest health insurer. Anthem services the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance networks nationwide.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hamm says information containing individual and dependent names, addresses, social security numbers and birth dates was compromised.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Darlrymple called the bill “a great legislative accomplishment” that had strong bipartisan support.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Senate voted 46-0 on Monday to approve the “surge funding” bill that is being rushed through the legislative process so projects can begin by summer. Most of the money is slated for the booming oil-producing region in the western part of the state.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Senate has rejected a bill that would require further study on a planned Red River diversion channel around Fargo. But project opponents have gained a temporary victory with a proposal meant to protect cemeteries. The Senate voted 24-21 Tuesday in favor of a bill to safeguard rural cemeteries south of Fargo that would be flooded by the diversion in times of high water. Fairmount Senator Larry Luick, who sponsored the bill, told senators he was worried that the flooding could cause caskets to float to the surface.

(AP) – North Dakota’s House narrowly shot down legislation to allow elected and appointed public officials to carry firearms at the state Capitol and other government buildings. The House defeated the bill 47-45 on Tuesday. Current North Dakota law forbids carrying concealed weapons in public places. There are exemptions for law enforcement officers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s House has endorsed a bill that would prohibit the governor from appointing a successor to a vacant U.S. Senate seat. House voted 67-25 on Tuesday to send the legislation to the Senate.<\/p>\n

University of Jamestown head volleyball coach Jon Hegerle has announced the signing of Ali Hasche of Bismarck, ND who will join the Jimmies in the 2015-2016 season.<\/p>\n

Ali played volleyball at Century High School where she was awarded Team MVP, Team Captain, WDA Senior Athlete of the Year, WDA All-Conference, State All-Tournament Team, and All-State 1st<\/sup> Team Selection. Her senior year she had 287 kills, 86 blocks, and 18 aces. Ali stands 6\u20190\u2033 and also participated in Track & Field. Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society, was senior class president, and was also a presidential academic scholar.<\/p>\n

Coach Hegerle says of Hasche, “We are really excited that Ali has decided to become a Jimmie! Ali is team-centered and versatile having played in 3 state championship matches in HS in 3 different positions. She certainly enjoys competing, but more importantly, she understands what it means to have a team-first perspective. Ali is a tremendous student and teammate and we feel fortunate to be able to be part of her future.”<\/p>\n

Ali plans to major in Communications and will be a welcome addition to the University of Jamestown family. She said of her decision, “I chose the University of Jamestown because of the number of Jamestown alumni I know who are highly successful in their careers, which showed me what a wonderful education the university offers. Also, after getting to know the coaches and playing with the university\u2019s team, I feel honored to play for a team that demonstrates such excellence and integrity in the game of volleyball.<\/p>\n

University of Jamestown head men\u2019s soccer coach Tommy Nienhaus has announced the signing of Nick Nguyen of Moorhead High School who will join the Jimmies in the 2015-2016 season.<\/p>\n

Nguyen (Moorhead, MN) played varsity soccer for three years in high school and junior varsity during his freshman year. During that time, he was awarded the title of Best Offensive Player and the Class Act Award. His team were the Section 8AA Champions during the 2012 \u2013 2013 season. Nguyen was also part of the Moorhead Soccer Club and the Tri-City Storm Soccer Club.<\/p>\n

Coach Nienhaus says of Nguyen, “Nick is a solid all-around person. He plays with current signee\u2019s Austin Peterson and Justin Froslie and will come here prepared to play at a high level. Nick is yet another versatile player who can play anywhere in the midfield and is suited for the college game. It will challenging and fun to help Nick develop as he settles into our program.”<\/p>\n

Nguyen plans to major in exercise science and business while at the University of Jamestown. He said of his decision, “I really enjoyed everything when I was on my campus visit. The staff, soccer team, facilities, and everything else were all great so it just felt like a good fit for me.”<\/p>\n
