\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Winter-like weather could create a few driving hassles over northwestern North Dakota in the next few days, but it’s a welcome nuisance for the dangerously dry conditions.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Heinert says some areas in the northern part of the state could see 3 to 5 inches of snow in the next day or two. Another system is expected to roll through southern North Dakota Wednesday, and more precipitation is expected after that.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Heinert says the moisture is needed and the sooner the vegetation turns green, the better.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Snow and ice covered roads prompted the state Department of Transportation on Monday issued a travel alert for the Williston, Watford City, Stanley, Crosby and New Town areas.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gov. Jack Dalrymple last week declared a state fire emergency.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Rural Fire Department responded to a grass fire at about 3:05 p.m. Friday at 2677 85th Avenue, Southwest nine miles north of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

A fire intended to burn trash and debris at the home of Pat and Lauren Yatskis had gotten out of control and burned grass on the south side of the home and along a pasture just south of the residence.<\/p>\n

The fire burned to the south and west of the house blackening less than one acre.<\/p>\n

Rural Fire Chief Rick Woehl says closely-cut lawn grass around Yatskis’ house slowed the fire from spreading toward the home.<\/p>\n

Woehl and five other members of the rural fire department fought the fire.<\/p>\n

The Rural Fire Department cautions people against burning trash or other debris during the current dry conditions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Eight firefighters snd three rural fire units responded to a fire about\u00a0two miles north of Eldridge at about 1:10 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n

Tolna (CSi) State Water Commission workers, last week began repairs on the Tolna Dam.<\/p>\n

The dam was on the verge of breaching on March 13th when water began rushing into a five-foot hole that developed on the top of the spillway.<\/p>\n

Nelson County Commissioner Odell Flaagan says less concrete eroded than originally thought.<\/p>\n

Engineers believe the dam can be repaired in six weeks.<\/p>\n

The project is affecting efforts to remove flood water from Devils Lake. The east end outlet can\u2019t be turned on until the downstream dam is repaired.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Daily Bread program in Jamestown will supply 22 people over the age of 60 in need of food assistance, with 60 pounds of food per applicant on Tuesday, through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.<\/p>\n

The food is designated for March applicants.<\/p>\n

Board member and Ave Maria Village Deacon Tom Geffre, says applicants who apply for food through the CSFP, a federally-funded program through the Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo, could be eligible to receive a box of shelf-stable foods every other month to successful applicants 60 years and older who have a limited income.<\/p>\n

The first shipment of food for the program will be arriving at the Salvation Army on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

The Daily Bread program has supplied food to individuals in need by retrieving unserved food from a variety of sources.<\/p>\n

Those include, Jamestown Regional Medical Center, the University of Jamestown and several local restaurants, as the frozen food is redistributed to different locations for anybody to take.<\/p>\n

Daily Bread has freezers at several schools, the James River Senior\/Community Center and at Ave Maria Village.<\/p>\n

Food is also distributed through the Jamestown\u2019s Salvation Army and Community Action Region VI.<\/p>\n

The Great Plains Food Bank is now taking applications, for the June distribution, which can be picked up at the James River Senior\/Community Center, the Gardenette or from Jamestown area pastors.<\/p>\n

Food items that successful applicants receive through CSFP include cereal, canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned fruit, shelf-stable milk, canned meat, cheese and fruit juice.<\/p>\n

The Salvation Army food pantry is also available Monday through Friday, except Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Miss North Dakota United States Organization is pleased to announce that on March 22nd<\/sup>, 2015, Mara LeFevre was awarded the title of Miss Jr. Teen North Dakota United States<\/i>. Mara\u3000is in the 9th grade and attends Jamestown High School<\/strong>. She is involved in golf, soccer, and band. She is a volunteer at the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown. Her pageant platform is to, “encourage children with disabilities, to gain possibilities<\/b>.”<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – University of North Dakota police say there is no foul play suspected in the death of 22-year-old student found dead at a home near campus.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man originally charged with assault to commit murder plans to plead guilty to a pair of lesser charges.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Francis Reed, of Fort Yates, says he will plead guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He faces up to 10 years in prison on each charge.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The assault took place on Sept. 10, 2014. Authorities say Reed attacked another man with a knife on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A change of plea hearing is scheduled Monday in Bismarck.
\n\u00a0

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who led police on an hour-long chase from the Standing Rock Indian Reservation to Bismarck last month is facing additional federal charges.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say William Schneider fled after he was pulled over by Bureau of Indian Affairs officers on March 3 near Fort Yates. One of the officers was allegedly hurt after he tried to stop Schneider from driving away.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court documents show that Schneider drove as fast as 95 mph during the chase and ordered a passenger to throw out a bag of drugs and a firearm.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Schneider was originally charged with assault of a federal officer and felon in possession of a firearm. An updated indictment also charges him with felony fleeing and eluding, and false statements.

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 68-year-old truck driver arrested at a border crossing between North Dakota and Canada on allegations he possessed child pornography has pleaded guilty in federal court.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Garold Miller, of Bridger, Montana, is charged with three counts of transportation of materials containing child pornography. He faces a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court documents show that inspectors searched Miller’s truck on July 15 at the Pembina border station and found electronic devices that allegedly contained about 26,000 still images and more than 800 videos of child pornography.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sentencing is scheduled for June 18.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who was sent to prison for breaking into a Spirit Lake Indian Reservation post office is scheduled be sentenced for failing to continue his sentence at a halfway house.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Robert Redroad Jr., of St. Michael, is charged with escape from custody. Federal authorities say Redroad failed to show up at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center in Devils Lake in October after he was released from a federal prison in West Virginia.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Redroad was sentenced in April 2013 to 30 months in prison on charges of burglary of a post office and conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Authorities say he stole a U.S Treasury check from the post office in Tokio.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sentencing is scheduled Monday in Bismarck.
\n\u00a0

(AP) – A church that has served the southeastern North Dakota community of Hastings for more than a century is closing.\u00a0\u00a0A declining congregation is prompting Spring Creek Lutheran Church to shut down after 116 years. The final worship service is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th. Pastor Marcia Hegna will continue leading First Lutheran Church in nearby Litchville.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Democratic Senator Richard Marcellais has been donning his orange blazer and matching loafers to bring attention to Vietnam veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange. Marcellais is a Vietnam veteran from Belcourt. He says there are about 15,000 other Vietnam veterans living in North Dakota, and many of them may have been exposed to the jungle defoliant.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Senate is slated to vote on a bill Monday that would prohibit the governor from appointing a successor to a vacant North Dakota congressional seat.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Republican Rep. Roscoe Streyle introduced the bill, which is response to a rumored gubernatorial bid next year by popular freshman Democratic U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The House passed the so-called Heitkamp bill in February and passed it on to the Senate.

\u00a0MAPLETON, N.D. (AP) – A 106-year-old woman has made a name for herself as the go-to quilt maker in Mapleton.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Myrtle Farrell has been making and selling quilts for decades.\u00a0 She cuts, stitches and assembles baby quilts every day. Each finished quilt also is tagged with her name before it’s sold.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Farrell was born in Fargo when Teddy Roosevelt was president and has lived in Cass County her entire life.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She grew up on a small farm that her parents rented. Her friend, Jean Madsen, surmises that’s why Farrell feels the need to be productive.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state’s annual effort to attract visitors is in full swing because it’s around this time of the year that many people start planning their summer vacations.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Legendary tourism brand was established in 2002 to increase awareness of what the state has to offer.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tourism Division Director Sara Otte Coleman says the top attraction is Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coleman says the division has been working with local communities, including those in the oil patch, to make sure they have visitor information readily available.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officials with the Minot Planning Commission say they’re concerned about approving the project without seeing a detailed site plan.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bakken Development Group has submitted the rezoning request for the project. The property currently is zoned for planned residential, and the existing plan calls for townhouses. The requested zoning would allow for medium density development.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Commissioner Travis Zablotney says the commission really needs to consider whether an apartment building is the right development to be next to a school.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Dakota Zoo is welcoming its latest addition with the surprise birth of a camel last month. Officials say a passerby alerted staff members that something seemed to be happening with the 17-year-old camel named Sadie. The zoo’s assistant director soon discovered the camel was giving birth. The zoo says the baby has been staying close to its mother.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials say the deaths of hundreds of geese at Nelson Lake in March were likely caused by a disease that spreads in areas where waterfowl congregate in last numbers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wildlife veterinarian Dan Grove says the 600 waterfowl, primarily mallards and Canada geese, died as the result of avian cholera.
