Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Nov 8, 2012) — Local Red Cross volunteer, Dave Smette, is still serving meals to those displaced by Superstorm Sandy.<\/p>\n

Red Cross Buffalo Valley Chapter, Manager, Beth Dewald in Jamestown set up a telephone opportunity for the local media, on Thursday, at the Red Cross Jamestown Business Center, headquarters. to chat with Smette and find out a bit more of his day, and what is happening in New Jersey, where he and Melissa Sheppard from Dickinson are volunteering.<\/p>\n

Smette and Sheppard left on October 31st<\/sup> from Minot in a Red Cross Emergency Response vehicle, on the road for over 1,600 miles on a two and a half day trip.<\/p>\n

When we talked to Smette he and Sheppard along with a Red Cross volunteer from Washington State had just loaded the ERV with 200 hot meals, for lunchtime, and were on their way from a kitchen set up and run by the Southern Baptist Church members from Atlanta, Georgia, located in Waretown, New Jersey, 35 miles north of Atlantic City.<\/p>\n

They were headed 10 miles out to a shelter south of Tom\u2019s River, New Jersey.<\/p>\n

There, the food is served, and then back to the kitchen to unload, clean the eating utensils, and then reload and travel back to deliver the evening meals at about 5-p.m.<\/p>\n

The day ends back at the location he\u2019s staying at, in Waretown.<\/p>\n

In that area alone, the Red Cross has 15 ERVs each delivering 200 meals, serving from four kitchens.<\/p>\n

Smette says he typical day consists of rising at 6-a.m., on the road to the kitchen by 7-or 8-a.m. to load the hot meals, and then on the road to deliver by 9-a.m.<\/p>\n

He says the nor\u2019easter storm that hit the are devastated by Superstorm Sandy received 3-4 inches of new snow the past 24 hours, but, dumped another foot of heavy wet snow north of Waretown, which caused another 200,000 power outages.<\/p>\n

Some residences are running on generator backup power.<\/p>\n

He added that is on top of about 671,000 still without power from “Sandy” which initially had 5.2 million people left in the dark, and without heat or a way to prepare hot meals.<\/p>\n

Smette pointed out that diesel fuel is somewhat easier to come by now, but, when they arrived the gas stations, that were in operation, had long lines.<\/p>\n

Smette will stay in that area of New Jersey for about another week, for a 14 day stay.<\/p>\n

He and Sheppard may leave the ERV there, to keep serving the displaced residents, and fly back to North Dakota.<\/p>\n

Smette says those being served, give the Red Cross volunteers a warm welcome and “thank you,” and even other motorists, when they see the Red Cross vehicles give them a “thumbs up.”<\/p>\n

As of Thursday, over 5,800 Red Cross workers from all 50 states are supporting shelters, providing food, and water at fixed sites, and driving through neighborhoods to distribute meals and supplies.<\/p>\n

Feeding operations are continuing in New Jersey along with all five boroughs of New York City, providing food, water, relief supplies, and comfort.<\/p>\n

The Red Cross has helped people in ten states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, all affected by “Sandy,” serving more than 3.2 million meals and snacks.<\/p>\n

The Red Cross has sent thousands of cold weather items to people in New York and New Jersey, and supporting some warming centers in the area.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Beth Dewald in Jamestown says, more Red Cross volunteers are needed to serve in those eastern areas.<\/p>\n

She pointed out that the best donations are that of cash, which is used at the sites to purchase needed items.<\/p>\n

She also stressed that disasters such as the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy points to the continuing need for disaster preparedness.<\/p>\n

On another topic, with the forecasted snow storm coming the next three days to North Dakota, the Red Cross is setting up staging area, in the north half of the state where the heavier snow accumulations are forecasted, in case there are stranded motorists.<\/p>\n

\u3000\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A church in Grand Forks that received
\nfinancial help from a New Jersey congregation after the devastating
\n1997 Red River flood is repaying the kind deed in the wake of
\nSuperstorm Sandy.
\nSt. Michael’s Church and School in Grand Forks plans special
\ncollections this weekend to help out St. Michael’s Catholic Church
\nin Long Branch, N.J., which was battered last week by Sandy.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Development Director Debbie Patella says the damaged New Jersey
\nchurch is grateful for the help.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The New Jersey church gave the Grand Forks church $12,000 15
\nyears ago.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger, reminds residents, that all motor homes, campers, trailers, RV\u2019s, or trailers of any type, should have been removed from all city streets by November 1, 2012.<\/p>\n

He says, these vehicle are currently being tagged and impounded when found in violation.<\/p>\n

The police department appreciates everyone\u2019s cooperation in this matter.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Jamestown area residents are invited to help start a new Thanksgiving Day Tradition.<\/p>\n

Organizers are planning the 1st<\/sup> Annual, Jamestown Turkey Trot.<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s (Nov 8, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 Rae Ann Kracht said the 5K Fun Run\/Walk will be held snow or shine, barring a blizzard.<\/p>\n

\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The floodwater diversion outlets on the
\nwest and east ends of Devils Lake are being shut down for the year.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Water Commission engineer Bruce Engelhardt says, much colder temperatures are expected next week and officials don’t want to take any chances with the weather damaging equipment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Engelhardt says the two outlets took about a foot of water off
\nthe lake this year. The west-end outlet started operations for the
\nseason in April. The new east-end outlet did not come online until
\nJune, and it had to be shut down for a few days last month for
\nrepairs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police say a man has died
\nafter he became pinned underneath a pickup truck.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say in a news release that officers were dispatched to
\nthe 1500 block of North 5th Street for a report of a man pinned
\nunderneath a truck. When officers arrived, they discovered the man
\nhad died.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A preliminary investigation indicates that the man was trying to
\nrepair the truck when it drove over him.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities have not released the name of the man, who is a
\nGrand Forks resident.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A convicted felon who walked away from a
\nMandan halfway house has been arrested in Fort Yates.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Christopher Young is charged in federal court with escape.
\nAuthorities say he tampered with his GPS monitor before leaving the
\nfacility on Oct. 28.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Young was convicted in February 2011 on two felony counts of
\nsexual abuse of a minor. He was placed at Centre Inc. on Sept. 10
\nand was scheduled to be released on March 8, 2013.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Young made his first court appearance Tuesday. A trial date has
\nnot been set.<\/p>\n

ZAP, N.D. (AP) – A man killed along with his 10-year-old son in
\na head-on crash in southern Minnesota’s Dodge County was a
\nprominent figure in North Dakota’s cattle industry.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forty-three-year-old Jack Reich (ryk), of rural Zap, was a
\nlongtime official with the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association and
\nrecently served as the group’s president. He died late Tuesday
\nalong with his son, Vander, as they returned from surgery at the
\nMayo Clinic in Rochester to remove a tumor from the boy’s brain.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stockmen’s Executive Vice President Julie Ellingsonsays \u00a0Reich and his son
\nrepresented rural values. The Reich cattle ranch has held a
\nwell-reputed annual production sale in February. Family friend
\nKeith Kessler of Beulah says Reich also helped introduce North
\nDakota cattle to the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – The man who shot and killed six people and
\nwounded others, including congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, has
\nbeen sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
\nThe sentencing of Jared Lee Loughner came after a hearing at which
\nGiffords and other survivors were able to confront him in court.
\nGiffords’ husband, Mark Kelly, told the gunman that her life has
\nbeen “forever changed” — but not “her spirit and her commitment
\nto make the world a better place.”
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama will become the first
\nU.S. president to visit Myanmar and Cambodia when he travels to the
\nAsian nations later this month.<\/p>\n

The White House says Obama will also visit Thailand. The trip comes less than two weeks after Obama’s re-election. Obama’s trip to Myanmar marks the culmination of a dramatic turnaround in the country’s relations with

\nfired at an unarmed U.S. drone aircraft a week ago in what a

Officials say the drone wasn’t hit. The spokesman says the drone
\naircraft was performing “routine surveillance” and was about 16
\nmiles off the Iranian coast at the time.

\nyesterday, getting in the way of recovery efforts from superstorm

\ntweeting from a personal Twitter account, possibly before the end

The 85-year-old pontiff sent his first tweet from a Vatican account last year.<\/p>\n

The new one will be his own, whether or not he sends the 140-character messages himself.<\/p>\n
