The asphalt buckled at the base of the hill, which may have been caused by a storm sewer failure there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reports of water over the road on Sunday on \u00a0N.D. Highway 9 in Courtenay and on Old Highway 10 between Jamestown and Spiritwood. Road crews\u00a0were \u00a0been dispatched to both locations Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>At 7-a.m. Monday the James River gauge in Jamestown show the river level had dropped to about 5 and a half feet, compared to just over 7 feet at 7-p.m., on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Before the heavy weekend rain the river level in Jamestown was maintaining three feet.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning at 7am. the Sheyenne River at Valley City was at 7.56 feet, a rise of about a foot from Sunday at 7-a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Storm photos taken on Sunday are posted on line at CSiNewsNow.com<\/p>\n<p>Other area rain totals from the storm included&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>4.45 inches at Carrington<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms between 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday resulted in rainfall accumulations of more than 1 inch per hour contributing to the nearly 5.4 inches Jamestown recorded officially as of 9 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A record for daily maximum rainfall was broken on Sunday. As of 9 p.m. Sunday, 2.56 inches of rain had fallen in Jamestown, which breaks the old record of 0.6 inch in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Flooding, freezing, fresh snow and even a funnel cloud.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Dakotas saw it all over the weekend, and the unseasonably cool weather is forecast to continue for a few days. Freeze warnings are in place for many areas.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 National Weather Service reports show heavy rain across much of the two states over the weekend. The rain led to street and underpass flooding in some cities, and some rivers and creeks overtopped their banks. There were no immediate reports of major damage.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Weather service meteorologists in Aberdeen reported a funnel cloud in that area Sunday. And snow fell late Sunday and early Monday in parts of North Dakota &#8211; including up to 2 inches in the north central part of the state. State officials issued a travel alert in that region.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0More storm updates through the day posted on line at CSiNewsNow.com<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown City Engineer\u2019s Office Sunday informed residents that due to the large about of rain\u00a0 received in the last week, access to the Inert Landfill\u00a0is closed to everyone except City Employees until further notice.\u00a0 The large amount of moisture has made the area in and around the Inert Landfill virtually impassible and dangerous to even the largest of our City equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u00a0will notify the public when they can again safely haul items out to the inert landfill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Update&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) Due to delays in receipt of comments on the Draft version of the Land Use and Transportation Plan for Jamestown, the Special Planning Commission Meeting scheduled for 5:00 pm, Monday, May 18, 2015,<strong> has been indefinitely postponed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This meeting and all of the corresponding meetings that will need to occur after the initial Planning Commission Meeting will also be indefinitely postponed.<\/p>\n<p>A new schedule will be published and advertised accordingly once the needed comments are received. The city apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) Victory Lutheran Church in Jamestown will start the expansion project late this summer.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Pastor Shawn Bowman said the $2.4 million project consists of adding to the sanctuary with 400 seats, plus expanding the Fellowship Hall, and the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that the goal of raising $1.4 million is at $1 million dollars, with the overall project costs at $2.4 million. The balance will come from a loan.<\/p>\n<p>He said the project will start when all the funding is in place.<\/p>\n<p>Shawn pointed out that the church\u2019s inflatable airgames will be held in conjunction with Kite Fest this June.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the church\u2019s web site<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.findvictory.org\/\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">www.findvictory.org<\/span><\/a><\/span><span> including Vacation Bible School, and the airgames.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) The Frontier Village Association Board of Directors has<\/p>\n<p>reviewed a list of 17 projects compiled by Jamestown Tourism Executive Director Searle Swedlund that the board has committed itself to over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>Swedlund said he came up with the list by reviewing meeting minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Swedlund said the board needs to determine how it wants to get these projects done.<\/p>\n<p>The board plans to review the list of projects to determine how far work has progressed on any of those projects.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Ann Hess said the biggest problem the board has with this list of projects is funding.<\/p>\n<p>Frontier Village Board President Charlie Tanata said there has been work done on some of the projects on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Frontier Village Manager Nicole Mosolf said the deck on the railroad depot building needs to be fixed and the entrance to the deck has been closed off until repairs are made. The deck on the depot building is one of the items listed on the project list.<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, Swedlund said he will meet with City Engineer Reed Schwartzkopf on Monday to discuss a section of 3rd Avenue that runs through Frontier Village near a retaining wall was built below a section of 3rd Avenue Southeast above the amphitheater in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Swedlund said paying for work to improve the retaining wall or road will be a challenge, with estimates on the cost three years ago, at $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oriska (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports on Thursday about 4:47 a.m., an accident was investigated on I-94 east of Oriska.<\/p>\n<p>The report says a a pickup operated by 55 year old Steven Ward of Fergus Falls, Minnesota was westbound as was a semi-trailer rig operated by 40 year old Ahmed Mhamdi of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Ward attempted to pass the semi, and sideswiped the left front bumper of the semi.<\/p>\n<p>After the impact, Ward continued on the highway about two miles before exiting onto Highway 32.<\/p>\n<p>Law Enforcement discovered the vehicle at the Oriska School where Ward was in the process of changing a flat tire.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested for DUI and will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.<\/p>\n<p>Neither driver, nor Mhamdi\u2019s passenger 46 year old Abdelkrim Khattabi, also from Chicago were hurt.<\/p>\n<p>The Barnes County Sheriff\u2019s Office assisted at the scene, as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities are investigating the death of a 42-year-old inmate at the regional jail in Devils Lake.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Director Tom Rime says John Wilke Jr., of Devils Lake, was found dead in his cell about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wilke had been brought to the jail about six hours earlier for detoxification.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say they are awaiting results from an autopsy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Formal charges are pending against a Grand Forks man who authorities say crashed his pickup truck into a home after fleeing from a traffic crash.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say the 31-year-old man was involved in a traffic crash in the downtown area shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, then crashed his vehicle into a house after fleeing from the scene.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The man was treated for unspecified injuries at a hospital and released. He was arrested for driving under the influence, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to illegal weapons charges, including possession of a machine gun by a convicted felon.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Dustin Wolff was in possession of three rifles and nearly 400 rounds of ammunition. One of the weapons was allegedly converted to permit full automatic fire.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sentencing is set for Sept. 28.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wolff had earlier argued unsuccessfully to have the charges thrown out because he believed law enforcement officers conducted an illegal search of a shed on his father&#8217;s property. A judge ruled Wolff consented to the search by cutting a padlock on the door of the building.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A public defender could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HEIMDAL, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Cleanup efforts continue at the site of a recent oil train derailment in North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Amy McBeth with BNSF Railway\u00a0says \u00a0crews in Heimdal are cleaning the tank cars, which will then be scrapped.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The train hauling Bakken crude derailed May 6. No one was hurt but residents of Heimdal were evacuated for about a day.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The newspaper reports the train consisted of 109 cars, of which 107 were loaded with crude oil and two were loaded with sand. The six tank cars that exploded into flames were a model slated to be phased out or retrofitted by 2020 under a recently announced federal rule.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 McBeth says crews are &#8220;containing and recovering product from the slough&#8221; and will be monitoring the area for several months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Eight North Dakota lawyers have applied to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Northeast Central District Judge Lawrence Jahnke.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The judgeship is based in Grand Forks and covers the counties of Grand Forks and Nelson. A nominating committee will interview the candidates and make its recommendations to Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL&#8217;-rimp-ul).<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The applicants are Gretchen Handy, Jason McCarthy, Kerry Rosenquist, Theodore Sandberg and John Thelen, all of Grand Forks; Cherie Clark and Connie Cleveland, both of Fargo; and Nancy Yon, of Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health will provide free hepatitis C testing Tuesday as part of Hepatitis Awareness Month.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The clinic says tests results are available in twenty minutes and is recommending that individuals interested in getting tested schedule an appointment.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause serious liver damage or even death. It&#8217;s primarily transmitted by blood-to-blood contact.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all people born between 1945 and 1965 get tested for hepatitis C.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Many people are unaware that they carry the virus, which hits more than 3 million Americans and has become a public health concern because it can be spread through sex or by drug users sharing needles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Over two dozen North Dakota faith leaders have taken a tour of energy-related facilities in the state in an effort to better understand the area&#8217;s energy boom.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0Clergy from multiple denominations recently explored a wind farm, coal mine and the oil patch, among other energy-related facilities.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Rev. Al Bitz with the University of Mary was part of the tour. He says it&#8217;s important that faith leaders get the straight facts on the impact of energy development.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bill Patrie is a member of the Bismarck United Church of Christ. He says congregations in different parts of the state have different attitudes toward energy development.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He says that while many parishioners in western North Dakota work in coal mines and the oil patch, others in the state&#8217;s eastern side think fossil fuel development should stop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) &#8211; College students in Williston looking to take a load off during finals week got some help from two service dogs.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The dogs named Elliot and Buddy visited Williston State College during finals week. Students could pet the dogs during the day to help cope with stress.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Leah Hoffman is the school&#8217;s mental health coordinator. She says she found it wasn&#8217;t unusual for schools to host service dogs during finals.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Elliot and Buddy are in the process of being trained by Jud-based Service Dogs for America to help people with post-traumatic stress disorder. Socializing is part of their training.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A 71-year-old North Dakota woman who dropped out of high school to help on the family farm finally has her diploma.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0 Katherine Schuler graduated this month with her GED diploma during a ceremony at Lake Region State College. She earned it earlier this year through an adult education center at the college.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The newspaper reports Schuler wanted to set a good example for her grandchildren. She started working toward her diploma in November, studying for four hours a day while working a full-time and part-time job.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The grandmother has been nominated to be North Dakota&#8217;s adult student of the year. She&#8217;ll find out whether she won later this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Flying machines without pilots and driverless road vehicles are slated to be featured at an event in Bismarck.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe \u00a0three-day Transportation and Trade Beyond Borders Summit starts today at the Four Seasons Golf Dome.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Organizers say the event will feature autonomous machines such as drones, trucks and even a self-propelled snow blower.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A group of speakers also will discuss the proposed Central North American Trade Corridor Route. Supporters say the route could be used by unmanned vehicles goods from Mexico to Canada and through North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In sports\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) Due to the recent rains, races at Jamestown Speedway were canceled last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The start of the season this week, May 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, includes the Advantage RV Modified Tour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>PHILADELPHIA (AP) \u2013 The Philadelphia Flyers made a surprise pick for their head coach, <strong>hiring University of North Dakota\u2019s Dave Hakstol on Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 46-year-old Hakstol spent the last 11 seasons at North Dakota. He went 289-143-43 with a .654 winning percentage in 475 games.
