(AP) &#8211; Storms that have passed through the Dakotas this week have dumped heavy rain and large hail and spawned funnel clouds.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Storms late Tuesday dropped hail as large as golf balls in the southwestern North Dakota community of Glen Ullin. Resident Amy Heinles says\u00a0some of the hail was jagged, and it put dings in her vehicle.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hail also was reported in the Hebron, Taylor and Strasburg areas, raising fears about crop damage. Funnel clouds also were spotted by Hebron, and a weak tornado was reported near Killdeer. There were no immediate reports of damage.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The western South Dakota town of Piedmont is recovering from golf ball-size hail and 6 inches of rain Monday night. Flash flooding damaged homes and roads in the community.<\/p>\n<p>In the area, a funnel cloud was reported in the Pingree area Tuesday, with a view photo posted on line at CSiNewsNow.com .\u00a0 LaMoure Tuesday afternoon received tennis ball size hail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi)\u00a0 On Tuesday June 2, 2015, City of Jamestown voters approved a one percent city sales tax to support the proposed Two Rivers Activity Center (TRAC).<\/p>\n<p>The unofficial vote tally posted after counting the ballots:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes: 1771<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No: 1178<\/p>\n<p>The Jamestown City Council will canvass the votes on Monday June 8, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Summary: Total Absentee\/Early Voting Ballots: 893<\/p>\n<p>Total Election Day Ballots: 2060<\/p>\n<p>1,771 Yes \/ Approve the 1% sales tax for the construction and operation of the first phase of TRAC<\/p>\n<p>1,178 No \/ Reject the 1% sales tax for the construction and operation of the first phase of TRAC<\/p>\n<p>4 Number of ballots sent to Canvass Board for approval or rejection<\/p>\n<p>2,953 Total Ballots Cast<\/p>\n<p>Stutsman County CEO Casey Bradley said voter turnout at the Civic Center polls, throughout the day on Tuesday, was steady.<\/p>\n<p>The ballot measure did not specify when the sales tax would start. The earliest it could begin is October 1, 2015. The one percent city sales tax will be in place until 2035 or until the project\u2019s debt is retired<\/p>\n<p>The $28.6 million first phase of the Two Rivers Activity Center is a &#8220;go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 172,000-square-foot facility will house an aquatic center, a childcare facility, three basketball courts, a walking and jogging track, a weight training area and an indoor turf field under a dome.<\/p>\n<p>TRAC will be located on land near Jamestown High School, with . half of the property, or, 7.5 acres, needed donated by Jamestown Public School in exchange for use of the facility in Jamestown school activities.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown Public Schools will trade an additional 7.5 acres to TRAC for a nearby parcel that Parks and Recreation plans to purchase from Jamestown Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>A proposed second phase would expand the facility for a final estimated cost of $40 million.<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to the vote. TRAC board member Mark Ukestad thanked those who voted to approve the one percent sales tax.<\/p>\n<p>TRAC Board President Rachel Liechty says the vote was important to Jamestown&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Rob Lech, who is also a member of the TRAC Board, said the vote indicates Jamestown residents are looking forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Commission met in Regular Session Tuesday evening at City Hall. All members were present.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting started with former Valley City Forester Dave Dunham was presented a plaque for his service of 23 years. Mayor Werkhoven gave his appreciation, including searching out dutch elm diseased trees, and being on call. Dunham gave thanks to his botany instructor, and said he always did his best.<\/p>\n<p>Next was the swearing in of Valley City Police Officer Amanda Lawrence. He said he\u2019s paying a meter reader out the utility fund fees, so the $5 for not having AMI amounts to a double fee.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>ORDINANCES<\/p>\n<p>City Commissioners approved the first reading of an Ordinance rezoning Lots 5-8, Block 2 of the Original plat of the city of Valley City from B-1, Central Business District to PUD (Planned Unit Development). Attorney Myhre added that the rezoning is now under the redeveloped city zoning ordinance.<i> <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Approved the first reading of an Ordinance rezoning the East Half of Lot 2 less West half of alley, Block 37, located in Benson\u2019s Addition to the City of Valley City from R-2, Duplex\/2family to R-4, Single\/Multiple Family Unlimited. KLJ indicated sewage backup has been and issue, for many years, and recommends installing ejector pumps. The home owners have agreed to the installation, and Administrator Schelkoph indicated the city will work with the owners on the installations.<\/p>\n<p>The City Commission voted to approve the recommended option.<\/p>\n<p>Considered a request from the VC Development Corp to approve $50,000 to increase child care capacity with funds from the City Sales tax dedicated to economic development. Valley City Barnes County Economic Development Director, Jennifer Feist said the Barnes County Commission has approved the county\u2019s $50,000 share out of the county\u2019s economic development funds.<\/p>\n<p>She noted an increase in capacity is needed for childcare, which effects the workforce numbers and the ability to attract new employees to town.The City Commission approved the expenditure from the city sales tax fund.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Approved the renewal of Gaming Site Authorization for the Valley Twisters Gymnastics Club at Woodland Steakhouse and Bridges Bar and Grill.<\/p>\n<p>Approved a Contract with the State of North Dakota authorizing the Office of the State Tax Commissioner to administer the City\u2019s local Sales, Use and Gross Receipts Taxes for the 2015 through 2017 biennium.<\/p>\n<p>Considered purchasing property for flood buyout at 474 5th <span>Avenue SW. The property had been considered to be taken by eminent domain. The regional organization is an association of nine area fire departments. Around 300 fire fighters and family members are expected in Jamestown, during that time.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown Rural Fire Fighter, Brian Paulson says highlights of the convention includes the fire fighters parade, a memorial ceremony for those who have passed on in the last year, and participation in the Stutsman Relay for Life on June 5<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>He says the memorial service will be held indoors at the Jamestown Civic Center, on Friday at 8:45 a.m., where the names will be read. The public is invited, and is asked to use the upper level seating.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening starting at 5-p.m., the parade, featuring &#8220;Vivian The Pink Fire Truck,&#8221; and the Aberdeen Pipes &amp; Drum Corps, will leave the west Civic Center parking lot, and travel east on Third Street Northeast, up the stadium hill to the University of Jamestown Taylor Stadium parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>The parade will do one lap around the stadium track to honor an Association past-president who passed away this last year from cancer, and as a tribute to fire fighters who have passed away.<\/p>\n<p>The fire truck will also be present at the R.M. (AP) &#8211; A group of scammers is posing as students raising money for a trip. Police\u00a0say boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 visited residences in Oakes claiming to sell magazines to fund a trip to Paris, France. No students are currently selling items door-to-door<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Minot police say bullet holes were found in a vehicle and residences in three incidents in the same day.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Minot Police Department said in a press release that it responded to the incidents June 1.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One caller reported a bullet came into his home and hit his projection screen. Another caller reported his vehicle&#8217;s windows were smashed, but an officer found a bullet hole in the vehicle and another in the home at the location. A third caller said a bullet went through a TV stand in their home and broke a glass door on it.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say they&#8217;re investigating the incidents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0MANDAREE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities say a man was killed when his car rolled over while being followed by a tribal law enforcement officer in western North Dakota. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says James Leppell was ejected from the car he was driving north of Mandaree on May 28 last month. He was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A woman accused of driving the vehicle during a drive-by shooting on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Morgan Williams pleaded guilty earlier to reckless endangerment and terrorizing. Authorities say she was behind the wheel when Michael Mitzel fired shots into a residence in Mandaree last August. There were no injuries.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Williams and Mitzel tried to cover up the crime by hiding the shotgun and selling the vehicle used during the shooting.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Williams to 27 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mitzel has signed a deal that calls for him to plead guilty to three counts. He is scheduled for sentencing in October.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Minot Air Force Base woman accused of causing a fatal accident in Minot is on trial in the city.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0 Jury selection began Tuesday for the trial of 32-year-old Maria Sutton. She&#8217;s accused of driving her car in the wrong lane in June 2013 and striking a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Robert Morrison head-on, killing the Westhope man.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sutton has pleaded not guilty to a felony negligent homicide charge that carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison. Her trial is scheduled to continue through the rest of the week.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN&#8217;-juhm) says the North Dakota State University Development Foundation and Alumni Association violated the state&#8217;s open meetings law. He says some action concerning a separation agreement with former CEO Doug Mayo should not have been done behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Law enforcement officials say they are beefing up crime fighting efforts in the oil patch of North Dakota and Montana.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A new strike force that includes state and federal agencies is meant to target organized crime, which has been blamed for much of the increases in human trafficking, violent offenses and drug dealing in the Bakken region. Authorities say more than 200 individuals have been indicted on federal narcotics charges since 2013.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Details of the proposal will be discussed Wednesday during news conferences scheduled in Bismarck and Williston.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The leader of the Justice Department&#8217;s organized crime task force, Bruce Ohr, is scheduled to appear along with U.S. attorneys Chris Myers of North Dakota and Mike Cotter of Montana, and North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Preliminary autopsy results indicate that a U.S. airman was drunk when he opened fire in a Grand Forks Wal-Mart store, killing one worker and injuring a second employee before killing himself.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Lt. Derik Zimmel says 21-year-old Marcell Willis had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, more than double North Dakota&#8217;s legal limit for driving of 0.08.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Willis was a senior airman stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base. Police say he walked into the store about 1 a.m. on May 26 and shot and killed 70-year-old cashier Gregory Weiland. Willis then shot and wounded 47-year-old overnight grocery general manager Lisa Braun, who was released from a hospital over the weekend.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Willis then killed himself. The autopsy concluded that he died of a gunshot wound to the head.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D.
