SOME STORMS MAY BE STRONG TO SEVERE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City (CSi) At Tuesday\u2019s Valley City Public School Public School District school board election to elect the At-Large position, voters, and have elected \u00a0Valley City resident Rich Schueneman<\/p>\n<p>Unofficial results show that Schueneman got 305 votes\u00a0with incumbant Rick \u00a0Ross receiving 170 votes for the 3 year term.<\/p>\n<p>School district Business Manager Linda Heit says 475 ballots were cast including\u00a0 51\u00a0 absentee. She said there were no write-in votes cast in the 2015 election.<\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0the 2012 school board election Rick Ross received 1,415 votes compared to incumbent Sharon Buhr who got 997 when there was a countywide election.<\/p>\n<p>Incumbent Rick Ross was seeking another term on the school board. Ross is near the end of his first 4-year term.<\/p>\n<p>Ross is an assistant professor at Valley City State University in the Division of Business &amp; Information Technology Department.<\/p>\n<p>He was challenged by Valley City resident Rich Schueneman is on the ballot for the At-Large position now held by Ross. Schueneman is the Bald Hill Dam Resource Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and previously served as a Valley City Commissioner \u00a0from 1996 to 2002.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carrington (CSi) Bird spotters from around the country are joining local residents at the 13th Annual Potholes &amp; Prairie Birding Festival June 10-14 in Carrington.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is expecting 60 visitors to join the locals.<\/p>\n<p>In Carrington there will be seminars and social events with guided bus tours to include Birds of the Drift Prairie, Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge and Hawks Nest Ridge, Horsehead Lake Kidder County, Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Stutsman County.<\/p>\n<p>There will be expert guides to instruct the watchers on what to look for, and scout the best sites ahead of time, allowing birders more time to view and listen.<\/p>\n<p>Birders are on the bus at 5 a.m. to make sure they are out when they can hear the birds singing their morning songs at sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>The festival coordinates with the American Birding Association and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It is not a birding competition event but does attract serious birders.<\/p>\n<p>The fee is $395 for full registration or $135 per day. The festival is supported by Jamestown Tourism, Carrington Community Development, Convention and Visitors Bureau. Another $500 prize for Best Bike is pending on a sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>There will be food, a fishing game for the kids, possibly some sidewalk sales, and a street dance to Fully Loaded starting at 8 at the Corner Bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Park Board will hear a formal presentation from Interstate Engineering on having the Jamestown-based company provide construction management for the Two Rivers Activity Center.<\/p>\n<p>Interstate Engineering\u2019s Travis Dillman, and Daren Peterka have discussed with the Park Board, about the construction management services the company could provide if the commission chooses to hire the firm.<\/p>\n<p>Parks and Recreation Director, Doug \u00a0Hogan said the Park Board, will not seek bids, but could invite different firms to give presentations.<\/p>\n<p>The Park Board has reviewed information from American City Bureau Inc., of West Dundee, Illinois, on possible costs for having the company lead a capital fundraising campaign that would pay for the second phase of TRAC, which will only be built if the funds are raised in the community, and would bring the center\u2019s total cost to $40 million. Options include the company providing staff and guidance with costs ranging from $216,000 to $312,000 paid over a two-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The one percent City Sales Tax approve by voters, June 2<sup>nd<\/sup> will providing funding for the first phase, costing $28.6 million. The first phase includes an indoor water recreation area, fitness center, child care area, three multisport courts, an elevated running\/walking track and indoor turf field.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) With one member absent the Jamestown City Planning Commission has unanimously rejected an update to the existing zoning plan for Eventide Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>The vote was 7-0 with Mike Rhinehart absent.<\/p>\n<p>The Eventide property is zoned a public, open development and conservation district, so it must submit a detailed plan for any construction projects for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>A plan had been approved in 2013, but another approval was required because the plan was changed.<\/p>\n<p>SRF Consulting, planner, Cindy Gray, presented the new information.<\/p>\n<p>The new plan includes an L-shaped assisted-living facility in the southwest corner of the property with parking lots in the southeast and northwest corners.<\/p>\n<p>The original plan placed the assisted-living facility in the northwest corner of the property. The new plan also included no plans for demolishing the existing skilled-nursing facility. It showed two outlines indicating possible locations for future new skilled nursing buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Adjacent home owners indicated their concerns for the new plan.<\/p>\n<p>Two lots, where homes had been purchased and demolished to create a greenspace buffer between Eventide and residential homes, were part of a parking lot in the new plan.<\/p>\n<p>A resident, said litter on the streets around the property was a problem.<\/p>\n<p>There was no representative from Eventide or its architectural firm at Monday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The City Planning Commission also approved a zoning change, preliminary plat and final plat for Dakota Acres First Addition, including homes along the west side of Highway 20, north of the Jamestown city limits.<\/p>\n<p>The properties fall within the 1-mile extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city of Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>A property owner west of the Dakota Acres First Addition, Duane Entzminger said the land between the properties along Highway 20 and the Jamestown Reservoir may be platted and developed in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) R.M. (AP) &#8211; An 85-year-old North Dakota man is dead after he collided with a semi on U.S. Highway 2 near Devils Lake.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the man from Perth, North Dakota, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Tuesday, about two miles west of Devils Lake. He was not immediately identified.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the man was driving a Chevy pickup truck around 10:30 a.m. when it collided with the driver&#8217;s side of the semi-trailer. The Highway Patrol says the man was not wearing a seatbelt.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 63-year-old male driver of the semi was not injured. His trailer has moderate damage.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Highway Patrol says the victim will be publicly identified after his family is notified about the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BLANCHARD, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Four people are dead in what authorities believe is a case of carbon monoxide poisoning in a rural home in Traill County.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Sheriff&#8217;s Office says emergency responders rescued four other people from the home near Blanchard late Sunday.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Capt. Tony Ernst says local and state investigators believe that a propane-fueled water heater being used with a swimming pool was improperly vented and caused the deadly carbon monoxide gas to build up inside the home. No foul play is suspected.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dead are 53-year-old homeowner Ross Matejcek, 27-year-old Ricky Fisher of Blanchard, 24-year-old Margaret Fisher of Portland, and 6-year-old Jabin Newmes of Portland.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forty-five year-old Bonnie Fisher of Blanchard and three children were rescued from the home and taken to hospitals in Hillsboro and Fargo. Fisher is listed in good condition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A South Dakota woman accused of leaving her two young daughters to die in an unheated car during a frigid winter day on a North Dakota American Indian reservation has pleaded guilty to child abuse, saying she was under the influence of drugs.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Twenty-five-year-old Michelle Wounded Face entered pleas Tuesday in federal court. She&#8217;ll be sentenced Sept. 2.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She could face 10 years in prison but also could be sentenced to time served, about six months. The decision is up to Judge Daniel Hovland. He says he&#8217;d like to see Wounded Face get help rather than a lengthy prison term.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wounded Face is accused of abandoning her daughters in a car for more than three hours Jan. 3, in bitter cold. They survived. She says she doesn&#8217;t remember what happened.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0NEW ENGLAND, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Authorities have dropped a case against a Minot woman accused of using meth and giving the drug to four other inmates at the Dakota Women&#8217;s Correctional Rehabilitation Center.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nProsecutors said in court documents that they did not have enough evidence to pursue the case against 22-year-old Chelsea Nelson.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nelson had been charged with possession of a controlled substance by an inmate, a Class A felony that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The charge came after corrections officials last fall ordered an investigation into possible drug use by inmates at the New England lockup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota woman has found a razor blade affixed to the handle of a Wal-Mart shopping cart.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lisa Zimmerman says she discovered a long razor blade, such as those found in utility or box-cutting knives, implanted in the handle. She reported the incident to store managers, snapped a picture and later called police.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Dawson woman says she likely would have injured herself had she cleaned the handle with a sanitizing wipe.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena says anyone with information about the placement of the razor blade should contact police. He says the department has not received similar reports.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wal-Mart spokeswoman Betsy Harden says the company is &#8220;relieved&#8221; that no one got injured. She adds employees have inspected all shopping carts at that store.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The former Dickinson Trinity High School principal who was blamed for setting fire to the school until a judge threw out the charges has filed a federal lawsuit accusing police of bullying and intimidation.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thomas Sander is suing the city of Dickinson, three police detectives and unnamed law enforcement officials. Sander says he was coerced into making a confession after he was denied food, water and sleep. He says he was not allowed to use the bathroom during his interrogation.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In addition, Sander says police worked for five months to prosecute and convict him even though evidence showed that someone else started the fire.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Matthew Kolling, the city attorney for Dickinson, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley is retiring effective Jan. 14.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kelley has led the Grand Forks university since July 2008. He&#8217;s only the 11th president in UND history, which dates to 1884.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kelley says he&#8217;s been contemplating retirement for &#8220;some time&#8221; and feels now is the right time. He didn&#8217;t elaborate.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Interim University System Chancellor Larry Skogen says Kelley has overseen growth in areas such as enrollment, research, and both the medical school and law school. (AP) &#8211; Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger (RAW&#8217;-shun-bur-gur) says updated North Dakota income tax booklets have been released for employers and individuals.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rauschenberger says the new booklets reflect reduced income tax rates passed this year by the Legislature.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The legislation signed by Gov. (AP) &#8211; Twenty-four women are competing for the title of Miss North Dakota this week.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The \u00a0boom town of Williston is once again hosting the pageant. The agency is encouraging travelers to use the crossing points at Pembina, North Dakota, and Emerson, Manitoba. The crossing is open at all hours on every day of the week and has the greatest capacity to handle large volumes of traffic. High traffic volumes are anticipated Friday, when Team USA plays Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A committee facilitating the selection of a new nickname for the University of North Dakota has narrowed the list of possibilities to 15.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The group started out with nearly 1,200 potential monikers. It was whittled to about five dozen and then to the current 15. That list will be narrowed even further before a final list is brought to the public for a vote.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State residents voted overwhelmingly in 2012 to dump UND&#8217;s &#8220;Fighting Sioux&#8221; nickname, which the NCAA considered &#8220;hostile and abusive.&#8221; The state Legislature put a moratorium on replacing the nickname until this year.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The 15 names still in the running are Blaze, Cavalry, Explorers, Fighting Green, Fighting Hawks, Force, Green Hawks, Nodaks, North Dakota, North Stars, Pride, Roughriders, Spirit, Sundogs and Thunderhawks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. About 2,800 people voted.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The three-fourths percent sales tax will fund a project that will include a two-rink hockey arena, gymnastics facilities, and a football and track field.
