Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Engineer\u2019s office informs motrorists atha beginning today – 6th Ave NE will be closed between 2nd St & 3rd St NE for utility work. It is anticipated the work will be completed within 2 \u2013 3 business days. The utility work and anticipated street closure schedule are contingent upon weather conditions.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Motorists and other traffic should use extreme caution when entering road construction areas. The public should consider alternate routes if possible.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) A line of thunderstorms Saturday evening, stemming from a cold front, missed Jamestown but cause damages in the Spiritwood Lake area, including damage to a cabin, from high wind.<\/p>\n

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning around 8:05 p.m. Saturday for northeastern Stutsman County.<\/p>\n

Reports say uprooted trees resulted from the 70 MPH wind.<\/p>\n

Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist said that Stutsman County Communications received two storm related calls Satuday evening, including one from the Sandy Beach area on the south side of Spiritwood Lake, where a resident reported a tree down across his driveway and he couldn\u2019t get out.<\/p>\n

Stutsman County Sheriff\u2019s deputies pulled the tree off of the driveway with the patrol trucks, so the resident could get out.<\/p>\n

Another deputy who stopped by a farm about a mile east of Spiritwood Lake and took a report of downed trees and 70 mph winds.<\/p>\n

Overall, no injuries were reported and no significant damage to buildings.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Police is warning residents concerning a convicted sex offender residing in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

20 year old Jeremy Cassidy Cohen is a white male, five feet four inches tall, weighing 157 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair.<\/p>\n

He now resides at 1214 6th Avenue, NE Apt #101, Jamestown, ND<\/p>\n

He presently has no vehicle.<\/p>\n

Cohen has been assigned a high risk assessment by the North Dakota Risk Level Committee of the Attorney General’s Office.<\/p>\n

Cohen’s offense was gross sexual imposition, two counts, engaging in sexual contact with girls under the age of 15.<\/p>\n

Disposition: 8 years; 6 years 9 months suspended; 240 days credit for the time served; supervised probation.<\/p>\n

He is currently on probation with ND Parole and Probation, and is on GPS monitoring.<\/p>\n

Cohen is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.<\/p>\n

This notification is meant for public safety and not to increase fear in the community, nor should this information be used to threaten, assault, or intimidate the offender.<\/p>\n

Any attempts to harass, intimidate or threaten these offenders, their families, landlords, or employers will be turned over for prosecution.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) A Jamestown family reported to authorities that their family dogs were apparently shot.<\/p>\n

After an emergency trip to a vet, the dogs are recovering at home, needing extensive veterinary care in the next few months.<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe page <\/span><\/a><\/span>is set up to help the family offset expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The family returned home last Sunday evening to find its two Great Pyrenees, Gracie and Georgia, severely injured.<\/p>\n

Authorities say the bullets appear to have been from two different guns.<\/p>\n

The Stutsman County Sheriff\u2019s office is still investigating the incident and asking for any information related to the case.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society, has an unusually large number of dogs available for adoption.<\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, President, Matt Opsahl said 18 dogs were available, including four puppies. Four of the dogs were “rescues.”<\/p>\n

He also indicated the shelter has 21 cats, eight of which are kittens.<\/p>\n

Also on our show Opsahl said fundraising cookbooks, calendars and t-shirts are available for purchase at the shelter, two miles east of Jamestown, just off the I-94 Bloom Exit 262.<\/p>\n

He indicated a good turnout for the July 18th<\/sup> Open House fundraiser.<\/p>\n

Donations of cleaning supplies, treats, food, etc are welcome.<\/p>\n

Donations of those items can be put in the drop box at Hugo\u2019s, or brought to the shelter.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) University of Jamestown President Robert Badal has announced that Dr. Bruce Chehroudi will join the University of Jamestown faculty as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chair of the Department of Engineering and Mathematics.<\/p>\n

Earlier this spring, the University of Jamestown announced an expansion to offer a mechanical engineering program in the fall of 2016. From a state and national perspective the timing is right to pursue development of the program due to high demand and interest from students.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chehroudi has extensive experience in higher education, most recently serving as the Director of Research, Development, & Education for Advanced Technology Consultants.<\/p>\n

His previous positions include Associate Professor and Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Kettering University, and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chehroudi completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Southern Methodist University, where he earned an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering as well. He also holds an M.S. in Economics from the Swiss Finance Institute and an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n

Badal says, “Dr. Cheroudi is a distinguished academic leader who will build an outstanding program that integrates engineering studies with our Liberal Arts tradition.”<\/p>\n

In accepting this position, Dr. Chehroudi says, “I knew that this was the place in which all my experiences, expertise, and creativity would resonate with others to build the next generation of engineering education that addresses the current and future needs at the regional, national, and international levels. There are so many tangible evidences reflecting the strategic direction of the top visionary leaders at the University of Jamestown.\u3000\u3000\u3000I am very excited and honored to join the University and be part of the team materializing the engineering vision and building upon a solid foundation.”<\/p>\n

The University will be offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a supporting program, such as Design Engineering Technology. The university plans to seek specialized programmatic accreditation. Currently, there is space in the university\u2019s Sorkness Center for offices, labs, and classrooms with plans for renovation and new construction being considered.<\/p>\n

Chehroudi will begin employment at University of Jamestown on September 14, 2015.<\/p>\n

The University of Jamestown was established in 1883 and is ranked as a top tier regional school in US News and World Report and a top Midwestern school in The Princeton Review. The school features development of the whole person through its distinctive Journey to Success experience.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi)\u00a0\u00a0Mrs. ND America 2015 State Pageant Director,\u00a0Mary Schwartzkopf, \u00a0has \u00a0announced that Christine Jorissen<\/strong>, Jamestown, has become Mrs. North Dakota America for 2015 to replace Hope Adam who has stepped down. \u00a0Jorissen, the first runner-up at the May 2015 pageant, will assume the title and represent the State of North Dakota in 2015.<\/p>\n

The new Mrs. North Dakota America, Christine Jorissen, \u00a0will now begin her journey to represent North Dakota as the State Delegate at the 2015 Mrs. America Pageant, scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, NV, on September 20\u00a0<\/sup>-24, 2015.\u00a0 As the new State Delegate, Christine is eligible for the Fabulous Face Contest being conducted on the Mrs. America website.\u00a0 The winner of the contest will secure a place in the Top 10 during the Finals at the National Pageant.<\/p>\n

These changes were necessitated when Hope Adam<\/strong>, originally crowned Mrs. North Dakota America 2015 in May, \u00a0informed Schwartzkopf that she would not be able to fulfill her obligations to the State title.<\/p>\n

The Mrs. North Dakota\/America Pageant is the official state preliminary to the national event.\u00a0 It is also a stage from which women in North Dakota can promote family values, women causes and local charities. Mrs. ND- America state pageant is for married women that are at least 18 years of age\u00a0\u2013\u00a060 +\u00a0.\u00a0 She must be legally married at the time of competition, a North Dakota resident and a U.S. citizen.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Applications for the 2016 pageant are available now.<\/p>\n

\u00a0KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a South Heart man who died in a one-vehicle crash near Killdeer.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Highway Patrol says 35-year-old Darryl Murray died Saturday afternoon when he lost control of his pickup truck while trying to pass a vehicle on a curve on state Highway 22.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The pickup rolled in the ditch, and Murray was thrown from the vehicle and killed. He was alone in the truck.<\/p>\n

\u00a0NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. (AP) – Two firefighters have been hospitalized after battling a fire at a newspaper office in central North Dakota.

\nCrews responded to the offices of the New Rockford Transcript after a call came in shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crews battled the fire for about four hours. Nearby businesses were threatened but weren’t affected.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One firefighter on the scene suffered from heat exhaustion and another from dehydration.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The building is a total loss.

\u00a0SAWYER, N.D. (AP) – A privately owned grain elevator in Ward County has burned down.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The \u00a0former Sawyer Farmers Coop Elevator was destroyed by a fire that began shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Firefighters from Sawyer, Velva and the Minot Rural Fire Department were on the scene for hours, trying to keep the fire from spreading from the main elevator structure to nearby bins and auger equipment.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Owner Nathan Smith says he had tens of thousands of bushels of peas, barley and wheat in the elevator but he was unsure how much the loss would cost him.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Smith says it was sad to see it burn, especially since it was one of the first storage facilities he purchased for his farming operation about 15 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u00a0NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a fire has burned hundreds of acres of land in central North Dakota.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Mandan rural fire department says a fire consumed well over 600 acres of land north of Interstate 94 near exit 134. A combine may have been responsible for igniting the blaze.
\n\u00a0
\nA \u00a0power transmission line was damaged by the blaze, causing power outages in New Salem, Almont and Judson.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol closed the westbound lane of the interstate for about an hour as the fire grew closer to the highway.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of stealing from the Dunseith Community Center has pleaded guilty in federal court.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Twenty-four-year-old Louis Cottonwood is charged with burglary. He faces up to five years in prison.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the theft happened in June 2013 and involved about $2,500 in property.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sentencing is scheduled for November 9th.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A public federal defender could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston State College students are seeing an increase in mandatory fees and the cost of room and board. The Williston Herald reports the overall cost of tuition, room, board and mandatory fees is going up 23 percent to $14,805 per year at the two-year college. College President Raymond Nadolny says the increase is due to base funding shortfalls, an increase in staff salaries and higher costs of construction and maintenance.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – The Mandan Park Board is considering a ban on private fireworks at city parks following complaints about spooked horses from the Mandan Rodeo Committee.

\n\u00a0\u00a0A motion was passed by the board at an Aug. 10 meeting on the proposal, though it takes two readings to be enacted. The proposal has an exemption for professional displays at the Mandan Rodeo, as well as other public events that would need permits for fireworks.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Mandan Rodeo Committee asked the park board to consider the ban, particularly at Dacotah Centennial Park. Committee president Bruce Schirado says horses have been traumatized by people using fireworks.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Past rodeo chairman Bruce Strinden says he’s concerned about the rodeo’s future because of the fireworks, and that top contestants now won’t go to Mandan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A groundbreaking ceremony is slated for a new highway bypass around the North Dakota oil patch town of Killdeer.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) and other officials are planning the ceremony Tuesday for the bypass that will route truck traffic around the Dunn County town, connecting state Highway 200 with state Highway 22.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bypasses are becoming a common solution for oil patch communities to divert all but local traffic. Other cities with bypasses or planned projects include Williston, Watford City, Alexander and New Town.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The federal Agriculture Department is accepting an additional 25,000 acres of North Dakota land into programs under the Conservation Reserve Program umbrella targeted at wetlands and other wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n

Ten-thousand acres is devoted to State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement, which pays landowners to idle land to create wildlife habitat. Another 10,000 acres is for a program targeted at duck nesting habitat, with the remaining 5,000 acres for a wetland restoration program.<\/p>\n

The programs are popular in North Dakota. Officials are seeking another 95,000 acres for the wetland and wildlife initiatives for fiscal 2016, which begins in October.<\/p>\n

The Farm Service Agency in partnership with the North Dakota Beekeepers Association and Pheasants Forever also is proposing an allocation of 20,000 acres for a new initiative aimed at creating honeybee habitat.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Agriculture Department is seeking grant proposals for honeybee research.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says up to $75,000 is available this year to fund research into practical solutions to honeybee health issues such as colony collapse disorder.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He says state lawmakers made the money available to address the increasing seriousness of bee diseases and parasites.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The deadline to apply is Sept. 15. Funded research projects must be completed by the end of June 2017.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Phase one involves the renovation of the old event center into a grand ballroom, three meeting rooms and a slot machine room that will allow smoking.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The \u00a0grand ballroom was designed to be converted into a wedding setting, a night club or sports bar, depending on the needs of the clients.

\u00a0FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) – The tribal college on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation is getting a federal grant to continue an academic support program that serves a large percentage of its students.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates is receiving $220,000 from the U.S. Department of Education for its TRIO Student Support Services program.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The program serves students who are the first in their family to attend college, as well as students with disabilities or low incomes. Funding goes toward academic coaches who help tutor students and to faculty who teach remedial classes.
