Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called out at about 7:35 a.m. Thursday to the Michael Shop at 8296 38th Street, Southeast, where burn barrels were reported on fire outside the building.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fire did not spread to the adjacent structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rural fire units were on the scene about 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Authorities are investigating a railroad crossing arm incident on First Avenue in Jamestown early Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The crossing arm came down when two semis were approaching the crossing, striking the both rigs, and breaking the crossing arm.<\/p>\n

Officials are investigating the accident.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The family-friendly, James River Family Fitness, Annual Halloween Party will be Friday October 30, 2015.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 JRFF\u2019s Torrey Herrington said, the party runs from 5:30-p.m., to 8:30-p.m.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s free admission, and those in attendance may purchase a badge for $5 for the cost of the new Haunted House participation and for the carnival games.<\/p>\n

She added that the funds raised will pay for the party expenses and any dollars in excess will go toward JRFF youth classes, and The Learning Center.<\/p>\n

She added that the JRFF Fall II session is underway, including the new youth workout classes, including Zumba, and Yoga, for young people in elementary and middle schools.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The City of Jamestown is looking for this year\u2019s community Christmas Tree to be located in front of the Jamestown Civic Center, for the Christmas season. The chosen tree will be removed by November 18th.<\/p>\n

Jamestown City Forester Doug Wiles says the tree should be a spruce tree suitable for removal. There will be no charge for the removal of the selected tree and crews will grind the stump.<\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) At the October 26, 2015 Special Meeting of the Valley City Public School Board, Superintendent, Dean Koppelman officially announced his retirement, at the end of this school year.<\/p>\n

Koppelman\u2019s final day as superintendent will be July 1, 2016.<\/p>\n

The search for a new superintendent for the Valley City School district has started, and school board chairperson Joyce Braunagel says they hope to make a final selection by February of 2016.<\/p>\n

The following is a letter of resignation from Dean Koppelman;<\/p>\n

Dear Valley City Public School Board Members,<\/p>\n

I believe our life in a sense is like a book, in that there are chapters to our life. Unlike a book, our life does not have a specific number of chapters. We don\u2019t know how many chapters we have in our life, but I guess that\u2019s something that makes life interesting and somewhat of a mystery at times.<\/p>\n

I have reached a new chapter in my life and with that in mind it is with sadness and excitement I submit to you my letter of resignation\/retirement as Superintendent of the Valley City Public School District, effective as of July 1, 2016. Until that time, I will continue to give my utmost effort as your Superintendent of Schools and I look forward to coming to work each and every day. We have some of the best students in the state of North Dakota here in Valley City and I owe it to them to do everything I can in my last year to help make a positive difference in their lives.<\/p>\n

I have had a very enjoyable and memorable career in education, with some of the best years having been spent here in Valley City. I will take many, many positive memories with me from the 18 years I will have served as Superintendent of Schools. Valley City is a great community in which to live and work and I cannot thank our community enough for the support that is given to our educational system, especially to our students.<\/p>\n

Here in Valley City I have worked with many outstanding staff members (teachers, administrators, support staff, and central office staff). The most important working relationship for a Superintendent of Schools is with the School Board, as I believe the leadership and direction of the school district starts at that level. I cannot say thank you enough, to the School Board members of Valley City Public Schools that I have worked with in the past and those I work with today for providing me the opportunity to serve our school district. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Superintendent of Schools in one of the best school districts in North Dakota!<\/p>\n

Being a Superintendent of Schools has been more than a job to me, it has been a sincere passion, as I have always enjoyed doing what I can to help make a difference in the lives of students and all of the staff who work in our schools. The most precious memories I will take with me is the contact I have had with thousands of young people in my career having served as a teacher, coach, Activities Director, Principal, and Superintendent. Young people bring so much joy to our lives. I don\u2019t know what we would do without them!<\/p>\n

I wish you, our students, our staff, our parents, and our community the very best in the future. There will always be a place in my heart for one of the best school districts and communities in the state of North Dakota!!<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Interstate Engineering has opened an office in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Spokesman Daren Peterka says the business founded in Jamestown in 1976 has grown to 13 office throughout North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana.<\/p>\n

Interstate Engineering provides consulting, engineering, land surveying, GIS\/GPS, and planning services to municipal, county, state, and tribal governments in addition to private individuals and corporations.<\/p>\n

The new Valley City office is located in a strip mall at 1134 West Main Street in Valley City.<\/p>\n

\u00a0SELFRIDGE, N.D. (AP) – The FBI is investigating the death of a man whose body was found at his home on the North Dakota side of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 FBI spokesman Kyle Loven\u00a0says \u00a0the agency was notified of the deceased man Wednesday. He says a woman was taken into custody in connection with the man’s death and charges have not been filed against her.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Giles Heinen is the mayor of Selfridge. He says his neighbor’s girlfriend banged on his door and repeatedly said her boyfriend was dead. He says he contacted the Sioux County Sheriff’s Department and later left the woman with authorities.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Selfridge man hasn’t been publicly identified. Loven wouldn’t confirm whether authorities suspect foul play.

\u00a0WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a Georgia man who was killed when struck by a semitrailer in the western North Dakota oil patch.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Benjamin Enterman, of Warner Robins, Georgia, was taking measurements on state Highway 23 in McKenzie County for an engineering company on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck. He died at the scene.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Arizona man driving the semi was not hurt. No charges were immediately filed in the incident.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The fate of a man accused of sex trafficking in the Williston area is in the hands of federal court jurors in Bismarck.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both sides in the Keith Graves trial have rested their case, and jury deliberations were beginning Thursday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Graves is defending himself against 11 charges related to sex trafficking and drugs. Women who testified for the prosecution alleged that Graves used a handgun, bat and fists to keep them in line.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Graves did not testify on his own behalf but maintained there’s insufficient evidence to convict him.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Graves was one of the main subjects in “The Overnighters,” which won an award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It followed a pastor who opened his church to homeless oil workers.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Agriculture Department is launching a research program to help determine whether industrial hemp can be a viable commodity in the state.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It comes eight years after the department issued the nation’s first hemp-growing licenses. Efforts to further the industry in the years that followed were hampered by federal drug law that doesn’t differentiate between marijuana and its cousin hemp, which can be used for a variety of products.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 2014 farm bill changed that. It allows for research of hemp in states like North Dakota that permit its cultivation.
\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department says it will have about $930,000 of federal grant money available for its recreational trail program in 2017.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The program provides matching grant funding for both motorized and non-motorized trail projects. Priority is generally given to the construction of new trails.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Applicants may request grant amounts ranging from a minimum of $10,000 up to a maximum of $200,000. Project sponsors must have at least 20 percent match funding available when the application is submitted.

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Lewis and Clark Bridge on U.S. Highway 85 south of Williston is closing for much of the day for maintenance work.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The highway is the major north-south artery in the western North Dakota oil patch. Motorists will need to take alternate routes between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday.

Voters will be deciding among three nickname options that were the most popular choices in the first round of voting. Officials say another runoff will be held if the winning choice does not achieve a majority.<\/p>\n

A former Bismarck mayor is still trying to keep the University of North Dakota from selecting a new athletic nickname.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday Marlan “Hawk” Haakenson registered trademarks for the words “Upper North Dakota Fighting Hawks,” “Upper North Dakota Roughriders” and “Upper North Dakota Nodaks.”<\/p>\n

He says, “I decided to include ‘Upper North Dakota’ because the first letters in those three words are U, N and D.”<\/p>\n
