Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown Police Department\u00a0wants to warn\u00a0Jamestown residents regarding a new convicted sex offender residing in the city.<\/p>\n

29 year-old Patrick Wayne Schmitz currently lives at 517 4th Street Northwest. He has been assigned a high risk assessment by the North Dakota risk level committee.<\/p>\n

Schmitz was charged in 2010 for Luring a Minor by Computer and Gross Sexual Impostiion when he met a 14 year old female in an online chat room. They met and had sexual intercourse several times.<\/p>\n

Schmitz is currently on probation and is not wanted by police at this time.<\/p>\n

This notification is meant for public safety only.<\/p>\n

Any attempt to use this information to harass, assault or intimidate the offender will result in immediate prosecution.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown\u2019s new 108 bed \u00a0Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, has opened at 930 25th St. SW,\u00a0 behind the Buffalo Mall.\u00a0 The hotel is complete, however the separate but attached indoor pool building and party deck will be under construction until summer.<\/p>\n

The soft opening was on Friday with a ribbon-cutting and Grand\u00a0 planned for November 16, 2015.<\/p>\n

Fairfield Inn & Suites is locally owned by Buffalo City Holdings LLC. It is managed by Fargo-based Paces Lodging Corporation. The groundbreaking for the project was\u00a0 in January.\u00a0 Paces also manages the Red Roof Inn and the MainStay Suites in Fargo and the Best Western in Bismarck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Operations Manager Josh Greeney says, the Jamestown Fairfield Inn & Suites currently employs 27 full-time and part-time employees<\/p>\n

Applications are still being accepted for various areas of the hotel.<\/p>\n

The hotel offers guests an\u00a0indoor swimming pool with water slides, a party deck and outdoor gas grill are all meant to enhance that experience.<\/p>\n

The hot tub that fits 20 people and a gas barbecue and fire pit outside.<\/p>\n

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department responded to 216 6th Avenue Southeast, just before 6-a.m., Friday, where a fire started in the basement of the home and caused considerable smoke damage to rest of the home.<\/p>\n

The residents escaped unharmed, and the family pets were able to get out safely.<\/p>\n

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says the cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Six city fire department units, and 32 fire fighters were on scene about two hours.<\/p>\n

Four adults and three children were displaced and the American Red Cross<\/p>\n

is providing assistance with immediate needs to the family, and is providing food, clothing, and shelter at a local hotel.<\/p>\n

Red Cross, volunteer, David Collin says, Pamela Adams and her family of seven were renting the house.<\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) Valley City Mayor, Bob Werkhoven has issued a statement in response to the resignation of Police Chief Fred Thompson.<\/p>\n

He says the statement is in response to “Public concerns and comments, and recent discussions with the police chief regarding his resignation, and other issues at the Valley City Police Department.”<\/p>\n

Mayor Werkhoven says the recent issues have prompted him to look at “other options with regard to the administration of the Valley City Police Department.”<\/p>\n

The mayor says an option is to have the Barnes County Sheriff\u2019s Office provide oversight to the police department, as is the case with some cities of similar size to Valley City.<\/p>\n

He points out that the county sheriff is an elected position, providing citizens to have a say in “who provides local law enforcement, improve communications between local agencies and political entities and in the long run be more economical.”<\/p>\n

He says there are going to be differences and controversial issues, initially, and that a study might be feasible.<\/p>\n

At the October 20, 2015 Valley City Commission meeting<\/p>\n

David Schelkoph said a Job Service request will be made to advertise for a new police chief, in the wake of Fred Thompson\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n

He said resumes and applications will be taken through the end of November, then interviewing candidates in the first part of December and have someone ready to go by the middle of January.<\/p>\n

Chief Fred Thompson says that his resignation will be effective in January. Thompson says he wants to spend more time with his family.<\/p>\n

He issued his laetter of resignation earlier in Ocotber.<\/p>\n

“I have now been in the business of policing for 7 years part-time and 32 years full-time. Over those years I have missed countless family gatherings, birthday parties, celebrations, and other events in life that people hold dear in my steadfast desire to serve the public good and to be the best that I could be in my profession. I have recently learned that my eighth grandchild, a grandson, will be born in the first part of February 2016. With this in mind I have made the decision that I am not going to miss spending time with this grandchild as I have done way to often with the others. I intend to tender my resignation as the Chief of Police for the Valley City Police Department effective 1700 hours on January 15, 2016. I want to inform you that it has been a pleasure serving the Valley City Police Department and the citizens of Valley City.”<\/p>\n

Watford City, (CSi) Gregory Ridderbusch, CEO of Connexus Energy and former vice president of business development and strategy at Great River Energy and president of the Midwest AgEnergy Group,<\/strong> received the Economic Development Association of North Dakota (EDND) Impact Award for Economic Developer of the Year \u2013 Large Communities Division during the EDND Fall Conference Oct. 27 in Watford City.<\/p>\n

The Economic Developer of the Year Award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution that will leave a lasting impact on the economic health of his community or region. Ridderbusch played a vital role in the Dakota Spirit AgEnergy ethanol plant in Spiritwood reaching its full commercialization in July. This is the first corn-ethanol plant built in the U.S. in more than five years.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a 22-year-old man who was killed when the pickup truck he was driving ran into a highway median and overturned.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol says William Pace of Bismarck was headed north on U.S. Highway 83 about 10 miles north of Bismarck on Friday afternoon when the truck ran off the roadway and into the median. Highway Patrol says Pace tried to steer the truck back onto the road but the vehicle hit a crossover and overturned.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pace wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police are investigating a report of prescription medication being found in a child’s Halloween candy.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say a posting on social media said a person found a baggie containing candy and pills in their child’s Halloween bag. On Sunday, police took a report from the person, who had been trick-or-treating with their child Saturday evening and found the baggie.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say it’s not known where the baggie came from, but the report indicates the house is in Bismarck. The child was not hurt.
\n\u00a0

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nord says the system that reports weather conditions to incoming planes has been plagued by frequent outages. He says he’s pleased to get it replaced before the busy holiday travel season.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says Brian Vita of Peabody, Massachusetts, has been ordered to pay $47,000 to Save Our Strand Foundation in Grafton, $28,000 to Lyric Theatre in Park River and $27,000 to Meadowlark Art Council in Crosby.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem says Vita took advanced payments from the three theaters when he was experiencing financial difficulties and continued to accept payments even after filing for bankruptcy.

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A citizens group has formed in Minot to address Souris River loops in the city that have become eyesores and potential health hazards.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The loops are a result of a flood-control project following major flooding in 1969. They’re found through the city, wrapping around several city parks. There is little water flow in them, and they’ve become stagnant, smelly, weed-infested and dumping grounds for trash.

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 self-named Dead Loop Group has formed to raise awareness of the issue. The group wants to fill in a section of dead river flanking one side of a popular park, and make changes to the river system to increase water flow in the loops. The group says it could be part of a new flood control plan.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Schools in the Bismarck-Mandan area are expanding a national program designed to prepare students for college and careers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Advancement Via Individual Determination program launched last year in south-central North Dakota as an elective class at Bismarck High School. Mandan Middle School and Wachter Middle School in Bismarck also started offering the course this fall.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bismarck and Mandan learned in October that they will share a $2 million grant from the Bush Foundation with schools in Minnesota to expand the college readiness program. Each of the school districts is spending between $40,000 and $60,000 on the program this year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Legislature this year agreed to pay $1.5 million in taxpayer money to buy the rare mummified dinosaur. But lawmakers said another $1.5 million must be raised from private funds.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Marlo Sveen is part of the fundraising effort and\u00a0says \u00a0most of the major donors the foundation has approached are from the energy industry. But Sveen says low oil prices means companies are cutting costs and few have spare cash to donate.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The three options still in the running are Fighting Hawks, Roughriders and Nodaks. They were the top vote-getters in initial voting earlier this month during which the North Stars and Sundogs options were eliminated.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The online runoff vote is from noon Monday until 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If one of the remaining nickname choices gets 50 percent or more of the vote it will be the school’s new moniker. If not, there will be another runoff.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Game and Fish Department during the upcoming deer season is continuing a surveillance program for chronic wasting disease.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wildlife officials will sample hunter-killed deer from 17 hunting units in the western part of the state for both CWD and bovine tuberculosis. Moose and elk killed in the state also are eligible for testing.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal. There’s no evidence it can be transmitted naturally to people or livestock.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A married couple from Williston will be among about a dozen strength athletes representing Team USA at this year’s International MAS wrestling tournament in Moscow.

\n\u00a0 Mitch and Lacee Hughes will join about 100 international strength athletes, many of whom are Olympic hopefuls for weightlifting, in what’s considered to be the “World Series of MAS Wrestling” at the end of November.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MAS, which means “stick” in Russian, is a contest in which participants attempt to rip a stick away from their opponent.

John Maultsby crossed the finish line on Sunday in a race in New Hampshire. It was his eighth marathon this year.<\/p>\n

Maultsby began his endeavor at age 60.<\/p>\n

He completed the Anthem Manchester City Marathon in 4 hours, 8 minutes, 15 seconds, capping his 13-year quest.<\/p>\n

Maultsby says he knows there are runners who’ve reached that goal a whole lot quicker, but he doesn’t know too many who started when they were in their 60s.<\/p>\n
