\"FireVC12416mary2\"<\/a>VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) \u2013 Art Kirschenmann\u00a0<\/strong>has died from injuries suffered in a house fire in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Gary Retterath says it appears the blaze broke out shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday in the home\u2019s basement.<\/p>\n

Retterath\u00a0says \u00a0the body of\u00a0Kirschenmann has been sent to the State Forensic Examiner\u2019s Office for an autopsy to determine his cause of death.<\/p>\n

Kirschenmann\u2019s wife\u00a0 Arlene,<\/strong> was injured in the fire, and was reported\u00a0 in fair condition in a Fargo hospital, Monday.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota State Fire Marshal\u2019s Office is investigating the fire.<\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) \u00a0–\u00a0 The Barnes County Sheriff\u2019s Office reports,\u00a0 a man was killed and a woman was injured in a 3-a.m.\u00a0Sunday\u00a0 fire in a two story single family home\u00a0in the 200 block of Sixth Street Northwest\u00a0in Valley City.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Gary Retterath says\u00a0a\u00a0male occupant was found dead in the basement.\u00a0\u00a0A woman who lived in the house was able to get out and knock on neighbors\u2019 doors until someone answered and called to report the fire.<\/p>\n

Retterath says, \u00a0a\u00a0retired couple was in the home.\u00a0 \u00a0The husband died, and \u00a0his the wife was taken to Mercy Hospital and\u00a0reportedly is listed\u00a0in fair condition, on\u00a0Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Authorities haven\u2019t yet identified the victims.<\/p>\n

Retterath says the man\u2019s body has been sent to the North Dakota State Forensic Examiner\u2019s Office for an autopsy to determine his cause of death.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0preliminary investigation,\u00a0indicates that\u00a0it appears the fire started in the basement and the man most likely went downstairs to check on it but didn\u2019t make it out. The fire spread quickly throughout the home,\u00a0spreading to the attic.<\/p>\n

Retterath and a deputy state fire marshal will\u00a0continue the \u00a0investigation in\u00a0the home on Monday to look into possible causes.<\/p>\n

No pets\u00a0occupied the home,\u00a0and the house was heavily damaged beyond repair.<\/p>\n

No other buildings were damaged.<\/p>\n

Retterath says about 20 firefighters and five units responded to the call. He says the firefighters had the fire under control within about 45 minutes of arriving on scene.<\/p>\n

Fire crews\u00a0 cleared the scene by the early Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Retterath says this was the first time he had a fatality at a house fire. He says after all the firefighters returned to the station from the scene, they had a debriefing with the Valley City Fire Department\u2019s chaplain.<\/p>\n

The Valley City Police Department was at the scene to help handle traffic near the home. The Red Cross provided\u00a0additional aid.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem said in a written opinion issued Monday that the North Dakota State University Development Foundation and Alumni Association violated state law when it refused to release the applications for people seeking to become its next president and CEO.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem said The Forum newspaper in Fargo requested an opinion from the state after the foundation refused to release the original applications for the positions. A search firm hired by the foundation had removed any identifying information and was in possession of the original applications.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem said the search firm was acting as an agent of a public entity and was therefore subject to the open records law.

\u00a0\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge has sentenced two men to more than three years in prison for distributing a powerful synthetic drug that led to numerous overdoses in the Grand Forks area.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kain Schwandt and David Noye Jr. pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances. Authorities say the two men continued to deal powdered fentanyl after they knew that one of their customers died from an overdose.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson on Monday sentenced Schwandt to 32 months in prison and Noye to 29 months behind bars. The judge said the case is “as bad as it gets” for a drug conspiracy.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Attorneys for the two defendants say their clients have taken responsibility for their actions and both have been model citizens since their arrests.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The comment period will run to March 19, and an informational meeting and public hearing will be held March 17 at the Buffalo Senior Citizens building.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Minnesota-based Pipestone Holdings LLC is planning the $15 million Rolling Green Family Farms hog facility. It needs a permit from the Health Department.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The federal trial begins Monday in Richland, after being moved from Spokane because of extensive publicity.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Henrikson faces charges including murder for hire, conspiracy to commit murder for hire, solicitation to commit murder for hire and conspiracy to distribute heroin.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Junior guard Carlin Dupree has rejoined the North Dakota State basketball team, two weeks after leaving because he was unhappy with his role.<\/p>\n

Dupree said in a statement issued by the school Monday that he made “a selfish decision” and hopes he’ll be forgiven.<\/p>\n

Coach David Richman says Dupree is a member of the Bison family and will be supported. But he also says Dupree is returning with “some adjusted expectations,” and it hasn’t been decided whether he’ll play again this season.<\/p>\n

Before leaving, Dupree had played in 17 games and was averaging seven points, three rebounds and two assists. The Milwaukee native is best known for coming off the bench and scoring four straight points in overtime to spark an 80-75 win over Oklahoma in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Plouffe gets a raise of $2.45 million under Monday’s agreement. He hit .244 last season with 22 homers and a career-high 86 RBIs. He also set career bests in hits (140), runs (74) and games (152), solidifying himself in the middle of the Twins order.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The settlement was $225,000 below the midpoint between the $7.9 million Plouffe had asked for in arbitration and the $7 million Minnesota had offered.

Rick Snyder’s plan to overhaul the district. The district says two schools are closed Monday due to a high volume of teacher absences.

The Europol agency says extremists will keep attempting lethal attacks on soft targets in Europe as the group increasingly goes global. Hours before the report was issued, a new video was released by the militants, celebrating the killers who carried out the November attacks in Paris. It shows the extent of the planning that went into the attacks. All nine men seen in the video died in the attacks or their aftermath.

That’s the indication from a report released today by the Department of Health and Human Services. It finds that the number of child victims increased by nearly three percent in the latest annual reporting period. The number of fatalities from child abuse and neglect in 2014 was estimated at 1,580 — up from 1,530 the year before.

It says the virus, which is suspected of causing birth defects, is likely to spread to every country in the Americas where the mosquito that carries it can be found. That would include everywhere except for Canada and continental Chile. The statement says the virus is new to the region, so few people have immunity to it.
