Jamestown, ND\u00a0 (KCSIt.v. News Dec 23, 2012)\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0 An incident Sunday evening shortly after 7- O\u2019Clock at the Stutsman County Correctional Center,\u00a0is under investigation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Jamestown Police and the Stutsman County Sheriff\u2019s Office were called\u00a0 to assist with approximately eight inmates creating a disturbance.<\/p>\n

According to dispatch, authorities\u00a0discoverd\u00a0smoke coming from\u00a0\u00a0a small cell in a main cell block.<\/p>\n

Inmates in the cell were taken to another secure portion of the correctional center.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0Jamestown City Fire Department was called to extract\u00a0 smoke.<\/p>\n

The majority of\u00a0 smoke had dissipated, when fire fighters arrived,\u00a0and reviewed and surveyed the scene.<\/p>\n

The incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

KCSi-T.V. News \u2013 Richland Couty authroities report, a Kansas man allegedly stole a vehicle in Jamestown, and is facing charges of leading law enforcement authorities on a high speed chase in Richland County.<\/p>\n

39-year-old Michael Owens is charged for possession of stolen property, fleeing and criminal trespass.<\/p>\n

Authoroties say Owens was traveling 100 miles per hour on I-29, near the border of Richland and Cass County.<\/p>\n

When Owens, failed to stop, deputies attempted to run the vehicle off the road.<\/p>\n

When the truck got stuck in snow near Hankinson, he fled.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Dec 19, 2012) \u2014 The Jamestown Stutsman County, United Way Campaign has set a fundraiser for January.<\/p>\n

The campaign \u00a0for 2012 is at the mid-point, and has reached about 27% of the goal, or about $53,000.<\/p>\n

The figure is in line with last year\u2019s donations.<\/p>\n

The goal this is a little higher this year, based on a greater need in the community, at $200,000.<\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s (Dec 21, 2012) Wayne Byers Show, on CSi Cable 2, United Way representatives Jessica Haak, and Connie Sova, talked about an upcoming fundraiser at Applebee\u2019s Restaurant in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The theme is \u201cBe An All-Star,\u201d as patrons may purchase a star, when they donate as much as they want, and the amount is added to their bill.<\/p>\n

The stars will be hanginf around Applebee\u2019s for the community to view.<\/p>\n

There are numerous other ways to still donate, with a payroll deduction through employers, or call 952-UWAY (8929) or mail a donation to PO Box 85 Jamestown ND 58402.<\/p>\n

Find the United Way on facebook \u2018United Way of Stutsman County\u2019 and someone will get in touch with you about donating.<\/p>\n

United Way has 22 agencies benefiting from donations, varying across a wide variety of needs. Those include SAFE Shelter, SART, he Jamestown Arts Center, the Senior Companion program, and Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and many more.<\/p>\n

The United Way Board is comprised of volunteers. Currently there are nearly 20 people on the board, who are listed on the Facebook page.<\/p>\n

Individuals who donate give varying amounts, which are all appreciated.<\/p>\n

A few of the major sponsors include: UTC in Jamestown , Cavendish, North Dakota State Hospital, Unison Bank, First Community Credit Union, Newman Signs and Butler Machinery.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Dec 21, 2012) \u2013\u00a0 The Boat & Water Safety Programs for area youth, ages 5 \u201312 years old, will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the James River Family \u201cY.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pipestem Dam and Lake Project with local cooperators\u2026.free of charge, and no registration is required.<\/p>\n

Pipestem Dam, Manager, Bob Martin says while the course is geared for youth, anyone can attend, and learn more.<\/p>\n

Martin said two course offerings are available at either 10-a.m., or 1-p.m.,<\/p>\n

Both courses are the same.<\/p>\n

Items To Be Discussed Include: Life Jackets (PFDs), Hypothermia, Boat<\/p>\n

Safety Equipment, Ice Safety Rescue, and Boating \u201cRules of the Road\u201d, and more.<\/p>\n

Classroom instruction is first, followed by, all Participants being allowed to operate mini boats with electric trolling motors on the Y\u2019s pool.<\/p>\n

Participants do not need to wear swimsuits nor bring along lifejackets!<\/p>\n

The Boat and Water Safety Course is sponsored By Corps of Engineers, Pipestem Dam and Lake Project.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Dec 21, 2012) \u2014 The U.S. Army Corps. Of Engineers reports, a water release from Pipestem Dam is two cubic feet of water\/second (CFS), as of December 21, 2012.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0the pre-recorded Christmas Day (Dec. 25, 2012)\u00a0Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Pipestem Dam, Manager, Bob Martin, pointed out, at Pipestem Reservoir, conservation pool, occurred in mid-September 2012.<\/p>\n

However, after freeze up the level crept up a bit, to need the release of 2 cfs.<\/p>\n

Jamestown Reservoir inflows stopped in mid June, 2012, and there is no release presently being made, but Jamestown Reservoir also rose about 2-3 inches since October, 2012.<\/p>\n

The rise stems from ground water going into the reservoirs, after freeze-up.<\/p>\n

A landowner, south of Jamestown told Martin that his stock water pond dried up last fall, and then refilled, due to ground water, running into James River Tributaries after freeze-up.<\/p>\n

Martin pointed out that it can take 50-years for ground water supplies to return to normal after either years of drought, or years of excess moisture added.<\/p>\n

He reminds residents that due to springs and pressure ridges, local bodies of water have varying thickness of ice cover.<\/p>\n

He said Jamestown Reservoir completely froze over about two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

Martin added that the Corps of Engineers will periodically measure moisture supplies in the snowpack over the next few months to determine the likelihood of spring flooding.<\/p>\n

The amount of moisture in the snowpack, along with the amount of spring rain will be closely monitored by the Corps and the National Weather service, with periodic reports issued.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (Dec 21, 2012) \u2014 The 2013 American Cancer Society Daffodil Days have been set, to benefit the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n

Community Relations Manager, Mary Dahl, of Fargo says, the Cancer Society\u2019s Flower of Hope, is a sign of renewed life.<\/p>\n

She says Daffodil Days comes at a time of year when a sign of spring is a welcome sight.<\/p>\n

She adds, once again the Jamestown High School National Honor Society, under the supervision of Tammy Mullowney, along with Community Representatives, Bill & Nellie Degen and Jim & Linda Bender, will be hosting the event in Jamestown and neighboring communities of Stutsman County.<\/p>\n

Pre-Sale orders of daffodils will be January 7-February 15, 2013, with the fresh, cut daffodils being delivered the week of March 18th.<\/p>\n

More information will be released later, on the pick up dates, and location.<\/p>\n

She points out,this year alone, there will be approximately $120 million invested<\/p>\n

in cancer research nationwide; $3.2 billion has been invested since the research program began in 1946.<\/p>\n

A portion of the money raised by past Daffodil Days in Stutsman County is presently being used to support Look Good \u2026 Feel Better, Reach to Recovery, Patient Lodging Program, and Transportation Assistance, which are very successful and well-utilized programs here in the area.<\/p>\n

The money raised locally is also helping to fund the Society\u2019s Cancer Resource Centers. Patients and their families from Jamestown and throughout North Dakota have been visiting these Centers for information and assistance following their diagnosis of cancer.<\/p>\n

The Society\u2019s research program is the largest, private, not-for-profit source of funding for cancer research in the United States, second only to the federal government.<\/p>\n

46 of the researchers we have financially supported have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. The Society\u2019s funding has also helped play a part in every major research break-through in the past 50 years, including: the Pap Test, mammography, Gleevex, Tamoxifen, Herceptin, Gardacil, the first successful chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and the bone marrow transplant technique.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man is accused of threatening to kill a federal judge in North Dakota and faces arraignment set for Feb. 11. Carlos Kidd is charged with mailing threatening communications. Authorities say he mailed a letter from Texas to U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in Bismarck.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A former Minot fire chief has been convicted of gross sexual imposition against a minor in a case involving a 12-year-old girl.
\n\u00a0
\n77-year-old Duwayne Daniel Ward was sentenced to five years in prison, with most suspended in favor of probation. Ward will serve a total of six months in prison and is ordered to register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to police records, Ward was alone with the girl, who was known to him, in his southwest Minot home in October when the incident occurred.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ward was the Minot fire chief for more than 16 years, beginning his tenure as chief in 1981 after spending more than two decades with the department. He retired in 1998.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University has received a federal grant for a program that focuses on preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The program is meant for youth ages 14 to 19 in the Fargo area. It will target those greatest at risk for unplanned pregnancies, including homeless and runaway teens and teens in foster care or juvenile detention.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officials say a recent youth risk behavior survey showed that about 45 percent of North Dakota students are sexually active. Thirteen percent have had more than four partners.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NDSU nursing professor Molly Secor-Turner says that while pregnancy rates in North Dakota are lower than the national average, the state’s most vulnerable teens are experiencing abnormally high rates of early pregnancy and childbirth.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The grant is for $1.2 million over three years.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some western North Dakota communities have begun benefiting from a project aimed at bringing treated drinking water from the Missouri River.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 Western Area Water Supply Project is designed to supply water to residents of Burke, Divide, McKenzie, Mountrail and Williams counties.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Legislature created the Western Area Water Supply Authority, which is made up of several western North Dakota water districts. The project was funded with $110 million in loans that will be repaid through the sale of water to the oil industry.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officials say the project is anticipated to serve more than 80,000 people in five counties by 2025.<\/p>\n

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen.-elect Heidi Heitkamp has been putting together her legislative staff ahead of taking office in January.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Heitkamp has named Tracee Sutton as her legislative director, responsible for managing all policy initiatives.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sutton has more than 16 years of legislative experience, serving on the staff of members of the North Dakota congressional delegation in both the House of Representatives and Senate.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Heitkamp has also tapped Shirley Meyer to serve as her western area director. Meyer has been a farmer and rancher, a small business owner and a long-time North Dakota state representative.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Williston Herald reports that the city has about $434,000 in bad debt this year, with the bulk of it coming from unpaid ambulance bills.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The amount of bad debt has tripled in the city since 2008.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Uncollected municipal court fines and fees totaled more than $60,000 this year, while water, sewer and garbage bad debt is just more than $5,500.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Billings Gazette reports that the commission on Thursday gave the OK for biologists to look into sending 40 female sage grouse to North Dakota in 2014 and another 40 in 2015.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota Department of Game and Fish officials made the request because the state’s population of sage grouse has plummeted since an outbreak of West Nile virus in 2007.

The Texans failed to score a touchdown for the first time since 2006.
