Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called to an Easter Sunday brush fire about 12:30-p.m., about 12 miles northwest of Jamestown, at 28th Street and 76th Avenue where there was extremely dry vegetation.<\/p>\n

Jamestown Rural Fire Chief Ben Maulding said property owners had the fire under control by the time firefighters arrived, with . two grass-rig pickups, one tanker and six firefighters on scene.<\/p>\n

The fire burned approximately one acre. It was a burn pit that was dug down but conditions enabled an ember to get out and spread quickly to the dry vegetation, trees, a fence and utility pole, that belongs to Dakota Valley and Northern Plains electric cooperatives. The pole was burned but remained standing.<\/p>\n

Rafael Cruz was born in Cuba, and as \u00a0a teenager in the 1950\u2019s, he supported the overthrow of the oppressive Batista regime which landed him in prison, where he was tortured<\/p>\n

In 1957 he immigrated to the United States with little more than $100 to his name and barely able to speak English, he studied math and chemical engineering at the University of Texas and earned a degree, worked in the energy industry before becoming a pastor.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Whooping cranes are in the midst of their spring migration, and the endangered birds will be making their way through North Dakota in coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The Game and Fish Department is asking anyone who spots a whooper to report the sighting to state or federal wildlife officials so the birds can be tracked. The birds are federally protected, so people are cautioned not to disturb them.<\/p>\n

Whooping cranes stand about 5 feet tall and have a wingspan of about 7 feet. They are bright white with black wing tips. In flight, they extend their long necks straight forward, and their legs extend out behind them. They usually fly alone or in small groups.<\/p>\n

Officials say people should be careful not to mistake snow geese, swans, egrets and pelicans for whoopers.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Formal charges are pending against a Minot woman who police say was driving under the influence with two small children in her vehicle when she crashed into a house.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the 24-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle about 4 a.m. Sunday and crashed into a fence, a fire hydrant and a house.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 2- and 5-year-old children in the vehicle were evaluated at a hospital and determined to not have suffered serious injury.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The woman was arrested on charges including DUI, reckless driving and child neglect.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A woman wanted in Kentucky in connection with accusations of financial crimes has been arrested in North Dakota.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Williston Police have arrested 30-year-old Yarelis Rios.\u00a0 Police arrested Rios after authorities were tipped off to her Williston home.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court records show Rios is wanted in Kentucky’s Fayette County on charges including forgery and obtaining a real estate loan through deception.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Williams County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Caleb Fry says Rios had been on the run for about two years and moved to Williston in October.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities in Kentucky accuse Rios of embezzling thousands from an apartment complex where she was employed and filing false tax returns.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jail records show Rios was extradited to Kentucky Thursday. Records don’t list an attorney who could comment on her behalf.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman has pleaded guilty to having sex with a minor.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Raelynn Thiefoe, of Dunseith, is charged in federal court with sexual abuse of a minor. Authorities say she engaged in a sexual act with a boy between the ages of 12 and 16.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 25-year-old Thiefoe told a judge during her plea hearing that she has been using methamphetamine for the last six years.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 12.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A district judge in North Dakota has set a date for the sex crime trial of Sawyer’s former superintendent and high school principal.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0The \u00a0trial against Charles Soper is scheduled to begin July 21.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Soper is accused of sexually abusing three teenage boys, and faces a total of eight charges, including human trafficking and child pornography. He resigned from the school after his arrest last May.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Soper has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. He could face life in prison if convicted of the more serious allegations.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Defense attorney Eric Baumann had asked North Central District Judge Douglas Mattson to move Soper’s trial out of the region arguing that media coverage has tainted the jury pool. The prosecution disagreed and Mattson later scheduled the trial.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Mandan High School plans to give each student an iPad to use for his or her studies, beginning next year.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0It’s part of a plan to provide one computing device to each of the district’s 3,600 students.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The district will pay $400 for each of the 1,000 iPads, for a total bill of $400,000. Assistant Superintendent Jeff Lind says the district will reallocate money it normally would spend on other types of computers, so the purchase will be “close to budget neutral.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The school district already has nearly 2,000 iPads, mainly at elementary schools. They were bought with federal dollars designated to help low-income students. Lind says the district plans to buy iPads for its middle school students to use during the 2017-18 school year.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – Some North Dakota college students have differing priorities in choosing where to go after graduation.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 David Hall is a third-year student at North Dakota State College of Science. He’s originally from Minneapolis and plans to return home to further his business management education after graduating in May. He says his family is there and that he knows the area better.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Priorities for him are family, having a support network and working in comfortable surroundings. Many students feel the same way.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mason Rademacher is a first-year student at the school from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Rademacher says he feels it’s probably best for him to go somewhere other than home after graduation. He says he’s looking at several transfer schools, including ones in North Dakota and Nebraska.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A youth psychiatric residential treatment facility in Bismarck has a classroom designed to help students choose their preferred method of learning.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, a 16-bed facility for youth with severe mental health issues, incorporated the “balanced learning” classroom this school year. It’s an effort to help students learn better and accommodate their needs.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Students’ choices include lying on the floor or sitting on a squishy block. Teacher Maryann Delzer says she has found children are able to focus longer.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Principal Jim Upgren says the balanced learning classroom idea came from the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Minot. Upgren and Delzer said they’ve had high success with the classroom and hope to expand it to more rooms.<\/p>\n

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The Lake Region Heritage Center is getting a new director and curator next month.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 heritage center’s board of directors has chosen Rachel Johnson, a current assistant at a Missouri museum, to lead the facility in Devils Lake. Johnson will have the dual role of director and curator.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Since 2013, Johnson has been on staff at the Springfield Art Museum, where she has helped with a comprehensive permanent collection inventory. She also guest-curated an exhibit that examines textiles throughout time and across various cultures.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the heritage center, Johnson will be responsible for scheduling history exhibits, art show and other events.

\u00a0ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Blake Hillman broke a tie with 4:32 left as Denver beat Ferris State 6-3 on Sunday in the NCAA West Regional final to advance to the Frozen Four. Hillman, Dylan Gambrell and Danton Heinen each had a goal and two assists. Trevor Moore also scored for the Pioneers. Denver will face North Dakota in the national semifinals April 7th in Florida.<\/p>\n

\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – University of North Dakota men’s hockey coach Brad Berry says it’s “humbling” to lead the team to the NCAA Frozen Four in his first season at the helm.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 UND won the Midwest Regional over the weekend by beating Northeastern and Michigan to advance to its third straight Frozen Four and eighth in 12 years.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 UND will seek its eighth national championship at the Frozen Four in Tampa, Florida. The Fighting Hawks play Denver on April 7, and if they win either Quinnipiac or Boston College in the title game April 9.

The Tar Heels, top seed in the East, became the only No. 1 seed to make it to the Final Four by outlasting Notre Dame 88-74 to win the East Regional behind 25 points and 12 rebounds from Brice Johnson.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CHICAGO (AP)- Syracuse is in the Final Four for the second time in four years. The 10th-seeded Orange became the fifth double-digit seed in NCAA tournament his to reach the Final Four after they stunned top seed Virginia 68-62 by outscoring the Cavaliers 29-7 in the final nine and a-half minutes. Malachi (MAHL’-ih-ky) Richardson scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half.

\u00a0AUSTIN, Texas (AP)- Jason Day has made it two PGA tournament victories in two weeks. The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, who won the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend, needed just 14 holes to beat Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy-zehn) 5-and-4 to win the Dell Match Play tournament.<\/p>\n

\u00a0SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – It took a playoff but the winner of the PGA’s Puerto Rico Open was Tony Finau. He finished regulation tied with Steve Marino at 12-under-par. Finau closed the win out on the third hole of the playoff. It’s his first win on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) – Lydia Ko won the Kia Classic to reaffirm her position as the top LPGA player in the world heading into the first major championship of the season, the ANA Inspiration coming up this week.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 LOS ANGELES (AP) – Blake Griffin has been cleared medically to return to the Los Angeles Clippers. His return won’t take place for a few days, however, as he now has to complete the club’s mandated four game suspension for punching the assistant equipment manager. Griffin, who has not played since December, practiced with the Clippers on Saturday and was then cleared. He missed 41 games because of injuries.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s new law blocking Charlotte and other cities from passing anti-discrimination rules covering gay and transgender people isn’t going to happen without a fight. The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups have scheduled a news conference in Raleigh today to announce a federal court challenge. North Carolina is also under fire from a number of big corporations and the NBA, which has its All-Star game in the state next year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (AP) – Ted Cruz is working Wisconsin hard ahead of its primary next week, knowing that it could be key to getting the Republican presidential nomination or increase the chances of a contested convention. He’s campaigned, gotten endorsements and released ads. Donald Trump is planning his first campaign visit to the state tomorrow. A Cruz win could force Trump to sweep five upcoming winner-take-all primaries to avoid a contested convention.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 TOKYO (AP) – Following Donald Trump’s statement to the New York Times that he would be open to Japan and South Korea having their own nuclear weapons, the Tokyo\u00a0 government today says it would rather leave well enough alone. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters today that the country’s “three principles of not owning, making or allowing nuclear weapons remain an important basic policy.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BRUSSELS (AP) – The Belgian health minister wished “Courage to all the families” today after announcing that four people injured in the Brussels attacks have now died, bringing the death toll to 35, including four Americans. Islamic State suicide bombers hit Brussels Airport and a city subway train on March 22. The airport is testing temporary infrastructure to see if it’s in good enough shape to reopen.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) – A Syrian military official says troops are taking the next step in the recaptured ancient city of Palmyra (pahl-MEER’-uh), with bomb squads working on removing explosives planted by the Islamic State group. The official says the explosives are strewn across much of Palmyra, including residential areas as well as the historic quarter that is home to some of the Mideast’s most valuable archaeological relics.
