Doane 44 Jamestown 13

CRETE, Neb.  (uj.edu)— Doane University jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back, defeating the University of Jamestown 44-13 Saturday afternoon at Al Papik Field.

The Tigers found the end zone on three of their five possessions, which included a blocked field goal returned 48 yards.

Down 30-0 entering the fourth quarter, Jamestown got on the board with 11:54 left. Jordan Mann (JR/Bismarck, N.D.) found Tanner Mathern (SO/Edgeley, N.D.) for an eight-yard scoring pass, and Kai Madela (FR/Henderson, Nev.)’s extra point made it 30-7.

Doane went 44 yards in six plays over 2:07 on the ensuing drive to increase their lead to 37-7. The lead ballooned to 44-7 following a Kyle Smith to Colin Kentros 23-yard touchdown pass with 5:28 left.

Jamestown’s Jimmy Hatch (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) went in from two yards out for the final score of the day, making it 44-13 with 2:03 left.

The Tigers outgained UJ 396-238 despite running 17 fewer plays (79-62). Doane had 203 passing yards to Jamestown’s 76, and 193 rushing yards to Jamestown’s 162. The Jimmies had a 38:53-21:07 edge in time of possession.

Allen Jevning (SO/Brainerd, Minn.) gained 56 yards on 17 carries for UJ. Garrett Mitchell (FR/Shakopee, Minn.) caught five passes for 62 yards. Mann completed 6-of-18 passes for 38 yards. Cade Torgerson (FR/Billings, Mont.) was 2-for-2 for 38 yards.

Defensively, Caleb Ellingson (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) had 10 tackles. Ben Steinolfson (SR/Steele, N.D.) had eight and Morgan Borland (SR/Brownsville, Texas) seven. Ross Monson (SO/Jamestown, N.D.) picked off a pass and finished with six tackles.

Doane got 89 yards on 10 carries from Garrett Sonderup. Jack Kalina, making his third career start, was 19-of-27 for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Cameron Vitosh had three catches for 52 yards. Josh Baker added four grabs for 47 yards and a touchdown. Connor O’Toole led all players with 11 total tackles.

Jamestown (1-4 overall, 0-3 GPAC) travels to Midland (Neb.) next Saturday while Doane (3-0, 2-0 GPAC) travels to Northwestern (Iowa).
