VCPD Chief, victim ID theft

Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) – Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson says he’s a victim of identity theft.

Thompson tells WDAY News that he tried to file his taxes and the IRS called him and said ‘you already submitted your tax return’ and I said ‘no I didn’t’ and they said, ‘yes you did. We paid a refund to somebody.’”

Thompson said “Someone had got a hold enough of my information to file an income tax return and got a refund in my name.”

Thompson believes his information was taken from the database with a store or an employer.

The T.V. station reported that authorities do not believe Chief Thompson’s identity theft is related to the Valley City State University thefts.
