Jamestown, ND  (KCSi-T.V. News) —   At least two Jamestown residents were contacted on the phone Tuesday Jan 29, 2013 by an individual with a foreign accent, asking for them by first name, stating their computer had been reported as having virus problems.    They asked to individuals to type in an address,  which brought up a screen saying several thousand viruses existed on the computer.   At that point the scammer had taken control of the computer.

The scammer then went on to offer to remove the viruses,  and a screen appeared for them to type in credit card information.   

This is a known Phishing Scam.    Internet users are urged to never go to an address based on an unknown ”voice”,  never give credit card numbers to unknown individuals who call you. 

If you received such a call and gave out credit card information,  turn off your computer and contact the local Police. 

If you received such a call and went to their website giving them remote control of your computer,  turn off your computer and contact a local computer technician for advice as to steps to check and remove any viruses placed on your computer by the scammer. 

It appears the scammers concentrate calls in a particular city or area code for a short time before the word gets out to the media.    By using public directories,  scammers get names and phone numbers,  to make it sound like they know the person they are calling. 

Be safe,  do not give credit card information to strangers.  Do not allow access to your computer to an unknown ”voice” on the phone.     Report the scam if you believe you have given out passwords, credit card, or bank information in error.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s Hospice program will benefit from proceeds raised, from this year’s “Polar Pig, Walk the Plank.”

The event is in conjunction with the Stutsman Harley Owners Group (HOG), and will be held on Saturday February 2, 2013 at Stutsman Harley Davidson in Jamestown.

Spokesperson, Don Wegner says the silent auction begins at 9-a.m., with registration and the ABATE Chili Cookoff starting at 10:30-a.m. A donation of $5 to enter.

He adds Don Wilhelm, Inc., in Jamestown is donating a car to be auctioned off at 12:30-p.m., with the proceeds going to hospice.

Walk the Plant begins at noon, with participants raising money for hospice through pledges, and other donations, with $100 raised to be a plunger.

Prizes will be awarded for …Team Spirit, Best Splash, and the Wildest Costume.

A D.J. will also be on hand.

Wegner says this is the 7th year of Walk The Plank, Polar Pig, and has thus far raised $67,000 for the JRMC Hospice program.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota Army National Guard unit has been notified that it might be called to duty in Afghanistan.
 
     The 814th Medical Company is based in Bismarck and has a detachment in Grand Forks. If the unit is mobilized, about 65 soldiers would begin serving overseas early next year, for up to a year.
 
     It would be the first deployment for the unit in the war on terror.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities believe a body found in a Cass County field is that of Colter Dallman, a 27-year-old Fargo man missing since early January.
 
     Fargo Police Lt. Joel Vettel says that is based on a preliminary identification. An autopsy is planned Thursday.
 
     Authorities found the body Monday while searching for Dallman. Vettel says there is no evidence of foul play.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Golden Valley woman has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in a fatal July 2011 crash and been given a suspended sentence.
 
Memory Bell will serve no prison time if she successfully completes two years of supervised probation.
 
     Authorities said Bell’s driver’s license was suspended and she was distracted by adjusting the radio at the time her vehicle struck that of 23-year-old Tyler Holder on a county road, killing the Beulah man.
 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The brother of a North Dakota man sentenced to life in prison for killing their mother has called the sentence appropriate and says his brother will not be able to hurt anybody else.
 
     Dale Grenstiner is the son of Ann Grenstiner, who was found slain in her home last March. Another son, Dean Grenstiner, was sentenced Monday to life in prison with the possibility of parole for killing Ann Grenstiner.
 
     Dale Grenstiner says his brother has mental health issues. He says his mother tried to get him help, but that Dean Grenstiner thought she was picking on him.
 
     Dale Grenstiner is a police officer in Connecticut. He thanked the Bismarck Police Department for keeping him informed following his mother’s death.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man who was arrested on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation but was able to remove his handcuffs and drove off in the police vehicle has been sentenced to prison.
 
     U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon announced Tuesday that 21-year-old Weldon Littleghost, of Sheyenne, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for damaging government property, possessing a stolen firearm and escape.
 
     Prosecutors say Littleghost and co-defendant Lucas Little, of Tokio, were arrested on tribal charges in April 2011 on the Spirit Lake reservation when they managed to drive off in the vehicle and remove their handcuffs. The two destroyed the car’s digital video and radio systems and shot out the back window.
 
     Little was earlier sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison.

 WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A group that supports hockey in the North Dakota city of West Fargo is raising money by raffling off guns, including assault rifles.
 
The  West Fargo Hockey Association hopes to raise about $90,000 by raffling off 200 rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders and assault rifles. The drawing is March 15.
 
     Organizer Mike Prochnow says planning for the gun raffle began last August, well before the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that sparked a nationwide debate about gun control.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation is launching program that will provide funding to increase safety on county and township roads in the state’s oil-producing counties.
 
     The program was announced Tuesday by NDDOT and Gov. Jack Dalrymple.
 
     The program will provide up to $10 million in funding to 17 counties in the state’s western oil patch.
 
     Some of the safety measures may include upgrading signing or pavement markings, larger regulatory or warning signs, and improving road curve signs.

 

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Six semifinalists have been named for the president’s position at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake.
 
     They include interim President Doug Darling and officials from New York, Maine, Arizona, Kansas and Idaho. They will be invited to the campus for interviews Feb. 19-20, and a search committee will then forward the names of three finalists to the state Board of Higher Education.
 
     Former president Mike Bower left last summer to become the president of Owens Community College in Ohio.

 NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A federal judge has approved an agreement for BP to plead guilty to manslaughter and other charges related to the 2010 oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil company also agrees to pay a record $4 billion in criminal penalties. U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance heard testimony from relatives of 11 workers who died when BP’s blown-out well triggered an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and set off the spill.
 
     SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) – The death toll in the Brazil nightclub fire has risen to 234,  after authorities counted three more victims were identified. More than 120 others are in hospitals following the blaze early Sunday in the college town of Santa Maria.
 
     MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexican officials say they have broken up a bizarre cult that allegedly ran a sex-slavery ring among its followers on the U.S. border. Mexico’s National Immigration Institute says 14 foreigners have been detained in the raid on a house near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball says it’s “extremely disappointed” over new allegations of performance-enhancing drug use against Alex Rodriguez and other players. A weekly newspaper, the Miami New Times, says it has obtained files through an employee at a recently closed clinic in south Florida that show Rodriguez purchased HGH and other substances. The New York Yankees slugger has admitted using steroids but insisted he stopped after 2003.
 
     GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) – A snowmobiler remains in critical condition in a Colorado hospital after a dramatic crash at the Winter X Games in Aspen. Caleb Moore was performing a flip Thursday when he clipped the top of a jump and went over the handlebars. The snowmobile rolled over him. Moore’s grandfather told The Denver Post the prognosis isn’t good and that it’s “almost certain” the 25-year-old won’t recover.
