VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP & KCSi-T.V. News) – An 18-year-old Valley City man is dead after a crash just south of the city. The Highway Patrol identifies the victim as Dillon Kapaun. He died of injuries sustained in a pickup truck crash that happened a just before midnight Thursday.
The Highway Patrol report says, the pickup was southbound on 8th Ave SW in Valley City while traveling on only three wheels as the front left wheel assembly had been broken off in a crash in the city of Valley City minutes prior to the fatal crash. As the pickup drove beneath the I-94 overpass (Exit 292) a Valley City police officer saw the vehicle traveling southbound with a great deal of sparks emitting due to the front-left wheel missing and was going to attempt to stop the vehicle. The pickup continued southbound and was unable to negotiate the curves in the roadway and entered the east ditch. The pickup continued southbound in the east ditch before striking an approach causing it to vault. The pickup landed south of the approach and struck a large utility post with the front-left corner causing it to spin and roll. The pickup came to rest right-side up facing north by northeast. The Kapaun was extricated from the pickup and transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City prior to being air lifted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.
