Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) Jamestown Public Schools Announces School WILL be in session on Monday, April 1, 2013 due to having a storm day on March 4th.

The Jamestown Public School Board will be meeting with AdvancED Review Board on Monday, March 11, 2013 in the Thompson Room located in the Middle School at 5:00 pm.

The Jamestown Public School Board will have a Special Board Meeting on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 in the Thompson Room located in the Middle School to review the report with the AdvanceED Review Board at 4:00 pm.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Buffalo Mall Merchants are sponsoring their 8th annual Business Leaders Chili Cook-Off Contest to raise funds for the James River Senior Citizens’ Meals on Wheels Program.

The date has been set for Saturday, March 9th, 2013 from 11:00am-2:00pm in the Buffalo Mall commons area.

For $5.00 the public is invited to taste the chili entries and cast their vote for the best chili in Jamestown, along with an award for the Most Votes. 100% of the proceeds benefit the Meals on Wheels Program. A wristband will be given to the chili samplers.

In conjunction with the chili cook-off, RSVP+ will host a benefit bake sale for the Meals on Wheels Program as well.

Business leaders include local bank presidents, realty companies, service clubs, as well as utility & engineering companies.

On Tuesday’s (Mar 5, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the Buffalo Mall’s, Tim Perkins said, the Chili Cookoff will be in the mall’s commons areas, with entertainment provided by local entertainers, R&C School of Rock.

He pointed out, to reserve a booth to call him at the Buffalo Mall at 251-2237.

Last year’s winner of the People’s Choice Award was the Jamestown Sun, and the Best Chili went to Classic Catering.

Also on our show on Tuesday, James River Community/Senior Center’s Rhonda Sahr said, in 2012 Center One provided over 32,000 home delivered meals in Stutsman, Wells, and Sheridan Counties, with over 27,000 meals delivered in Stutsman County.

The Meals on Wheels Coordinator at Center One, Rick Dockter thanks volunteers who bring out meals in all types of weather, year ‘round, as about 85-100 meals are delivered daily.

Volunteers to delivered the meals are always welcome, as there are 8-14 people on each route starting at 11-a.m., Monday through Friday, with six local Jamestown routes.

Time required for the Jamestown route is about one hour each day.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The public is invited to an open house as Nina Sneider retires, having stepped down recently as the Jamestown Tourism Director.

The open house is set for Thursday March 21, 2013 from 4:30 p.m., to 6:15 p.m., at the National Buffalo Museum.

A program honoring Nina is at 5:15 p.m.

　

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Mar 2, 2013) — The Jamestown Kiwanis Club and Kids Against Hunger, thank everyone who came out to help package meals on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Buffalo Mall.

Kiwanis officials said the event went better than they could have imagined.

400 volunteers package 140,000 meal bags, consisting of white rice, crushed soy, dehydrated nix vegetables blend, and a vitamin and mineral powder blend.

It said the community came together with a common cause – to help feed starving children and to save lives.

 

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Winter Show is beginning its annual run in Valley City.

The state’s longest-running agricultural show is in its 76th year. It runs from through Sunday.

Weather issues Tuesday, slowed the turnout of the first day of the North Dakota Winter Show, but officials still expect a good event for the 76th show.

NDWS Manager Dawn Riley says the crowd began picking up Tuesday afternoon.

  FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo officials say they have more than enough sandbags in reserve to handle flooding if the current National Weather Service predictions hold up.
 
     A flood outlook released last month by the weather service says the Red River at Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., has a 70 percent of topping 30 feet and a 5 percent chance of cresting near 38 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet.
 
     Fargo officials say about 101,000 sandbags would be needed to hold back the water if it approaches 38 feet. The city currently has 750,000 filled sandbags left over from the 2011 flood.
 
     Mike Lukes, spokesman for the weather service in Grand Forks, says this week’s snow storm will likely bump up the risk of flooding in the Red River Valley. He was not specific. 

 

 DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A negligent homicide charge has been filed against a man accused in a hit-and-run death in Dickinson late last year.
 
     Forty-seven-year-old Timothy Menges was arrested Monday in the Nov. 21 death of 47-year-old Tracy Freer. Police say Freer was struck by a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Queen City Motel.
 
     Sgt. Kylan Klauzer says tips led police to Menges. Klauzer says Menges is from the Missouri area, though court documents indicate he has been in Dickinson for at least the past year.
 
     Court documents do not list an attorney for Menges. He was due to make his initial court appearance Wednesday. The felony charge against him carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck woman accused of allowing her 15-year-old daughter to drink alcohol to the point of passing out has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and been sentenced to probation.

33-year-old Janelle Guy pleaded guilty to contributing to the deprivation of minors, and authorities dropped a felony child abuse or neglect charge. Guy was given credit for 27 days served in jail and ordered to pay $350 in court fees.

Guy was accused of allowing several teenagers to drink in her apartment last October. She stood trial last month but a jury failed to reach a verdict and the judge declared a mistrial.

 

 MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A New Salem man accused of mistreating horses and donkeys has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in Morton County. William Kiefer entered his pleas yesterday to five counts through his attorney. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
 
     GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A second man charged in an alleged human trafficking case in Grand Forks is heading to trial. Twenty-seven-year-old Joshua Harry earlier took a plea deal offered by prosecutors and pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution in the case that authorities say involved the pimping of a 17-year-old girl.  Harry now wants to stand trial on a more serious charge of human trafficking, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
 

 

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – Officials on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in western North Dakota say potentially radioactive filters used by the oil industry are being illegally dumped in fields and garbage containers and along roads.
 
     They say the filters that look like small nets might attract children and endanger their health.
 
     The filters are used to screen fluids at oil wells. Three Affiliated Tribes environmental official Edmund Baker says they’re being found particularly in the Mandaree area.
 
     Baker plans to travel to communities throughout the reservation to alert residents to the danger.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are slated to return to the Capitol today to kick off the second half of the 2013 Legislature.
 
     Members of the House and Senate finished voting on bills in their respective chambers last week and took a five-day break. The intermission is called “crossover.”
 
     In the Legislature’s second half, the Senate holds hearings and votes on bills that were first introduced in the House, and the House does the same for Senate measures.
 
     At the halfway point, 341 of the 511 House bills that passed and now go the Senate. In the Senate, 405 bills were introduced and 293 passed and will move on to the House.
 
     Legislators were paid during their vacation. They’re paid $157 daily when the Legislature is in session, including Saturdays and Sundays.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – Several men’s and women’s college basketball teams from the Dakotas are playing in the NAIA Division II tournaments this week.
 
     Both the men’s and women’s teams from Valley City State and Jamestown College made the national tournament. The Dakota State men’s team also made it, along with the Mayville State women. It’s the first national tournament appearance for the Mayville State program.
 
     The women’s tournament is in Sioux City, Iowa. The men play in Point Lookout, Mo. First-round play in both tournaments is today and Thursday.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State’s season-opening football game at Kansas State will be played on a Friday night. The change from a traditional Saturday game was made to accommodate the Fox Sports 1 network. Fox officials say the game will be carried in at least 90 million homes.

  MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The NBA has downgraded a Flagrant 2 foul on Minnesota Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea to a Flagrant-1 foul. The Timberwolves announced the decision yesterday, one day after Barea was ejected against Miami after a foul on Ray Allen. Barea says he’s pleased with the league’s decision.

 

NEW YORK (AP) – Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH’-kah) has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for striking Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers in the groin area during Sunday’s game. The league also upgraded the Flagrant Foul 1 Ibaka was given for hitting Griffin as the two battled for position in the paint to a Flagrant Foul 2, meaning Ibaka should have been ejected from the game.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Michael Jenkins. He played two seasons of the three-year contract he signed with the Vikings after the lockout ended in 2011. Jenkins was due a roster bonus of $2.425 million on March 16th.

     GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Team USA manager Joe Torre has firmed up his starting pitching for the first round of the World Baseball Classic. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will go in the opener against Mexico, followed by Ryan Vogelsong against Italy and Derek Holland against Canada.
 
     The U.S. team played to a 4-4 tie with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in the first of its two exhibition games leading up to the start of the World Baseball Classic. Giancarlo Stanton drove in three runs and Ryan Braun went 3 for 4 for the U.S., which opens pool play Friday night against Mexico.
 
     The Americans will be without Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR’-uh), who pulled out after injuring his right forearm swinging in the batting cage. Teixeira was set to start at first base for Team USA.
 

In world and national news…

 HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) – The federal government has closed its offices in the Washington, D.C., area today and schools in the region are doing the same as a late season storm brings heavy snow to the Mid-Atlantic. The National Weather Service is predicting snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches in the capital and up to 21 inches in the Virginia mountains before the day is over. More than 90,000 customers are without power already in Virginia.
 
     PORT SAID, Egypt (AP) – Egypt has deployed military forces to the Mediterranean city of Port Said (sy-EED’), but they can’t seem to keep the peace. Protesters have been hurling stones at local police who have been responding with tear gas. The protesters have been camped out for weeks around a government complex in the city. They accuse police of using excessive force.
 
     BERLIN (AP) – The United Nations refugee agency says more than one million Syrians have fled the civil war in their country and need help. Millions more are displaced inside Syria and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says the country is “spiraling towards full-scale disaster.” Antonio Guterres says the number of refugees has swelled dramatically since the first of the year, with most Syrians pouring into Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.
 
     CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) – Venezuelans have been reacting with both anguish and fear to news of President Hugo Chavez’s death yesterday. Many in the capital raced for home yesterday and stocked up on food and water. Vice President Nicolas Maduro has been named interim president until elections are held. He’s urging people to react with “Love, peace and discipline.” Outside of Venezuela, though, reactions have been mixed. In the Miami suburb of Doral, a celebration broke out.

 
     AMSTERDAM (AP) – The European Union Commission is fining Microsoft $733 million for breaking the terms of an agreement to offer users a choice of internet browser. Microsoft failed to stick to the 2009 deal for some 15 million installations of Windows 7 in Europe. The company acknowledges that it was a mistake.
