Jamestown 3 Minot State 2

Jamestown   (uj.edu)  The 13th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s hockey team earned its first win of the season Thursday evening at Wilson Arena, defeating No. 2 Minot State University 3-2.

Cole McKechney (JR/Calgary, Alberta)’s power play goal at 5:51 of the third period broke a 2-all tie and proved to be the game-winner for Jamestown (1-2-0-0).

The Jimmies and Beavers (1-2-0-1) traded goals in the first period, with the visitors getting on the board for a 1-0 lead at 8:46 of the period. Davis Sheldon tallied his second of the season as Minot State took the early momentum.

Jamestown took advantage of a Minot State penalty for the equalizer as Phoenix McElroy-Scott (SR/Morden, Manitoba) scored on the power play from Michael Pruss (JR/Red Deer, Alberta) at 18:07.

Dylan Johnson’s power play goal 2:28 into the second period put Minot State back in front 2-1. Just over seven minutes later, Trevor Okino (JR/Richmond, British Columbia) and Dylan Haney (SO/Brandon, Manitoba) assisted on Cameron Todd (JR/Burraneer, Australia)’s first of the year to make it 2-2.

Allan Pruss (JR/Red Deer, Alberta) and Okino helped create McKechney’s scoring chance as he came on the ice during a line change. The puck found McKechney’s stick and he wasted no time in putting it past the Beavers’ goaltender.

Tyson Brouwer (JR/Lethbridge, Alberta) stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced. The Jimmie goaltender made 12 saves in a busy second period to keep the game from getting out of reach.

UJ was 2-of-5 on the power play while Minot State was 1-of-5. Jamestown committed four minor penalties along with a five-minute major while Minot State was whistled for five minors.

The home-and-home series wraps up Saturday in Minot at Maysa Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
