JAMESTOWN  (uj.edu)— The 24th-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team defeated Haskell (Kan.) Indian Nations University Saturday afternoon in the 2018 NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship Opening Round.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Jimmies hit .282 in the first set while getting out to a 10-4 lead. Haskell rallied to get within four points at 13-9, but UJ scored five of the next six points to go ahead 18-10 and eventually win the set.
*Leading 6-3 in the second set, Jamestown scored seven straight points and took a commanding 14-3 lead. After a service error ended the run, Jamestown responded with the next four points to go ahead 18-4.
*Another fast start helped UJ in the third set. The Jimmies led 8-3 before a Haskell rally cut the lead to two points, 11-8. A six-point rally gave Jamestown the momentum while quelling any hopes Haskell had of extending the match to a fourth set.

FOR UJ
*The Jimmies hit .255 for the match, with 37 kills against 10 attack errors in 106 attempts.
*Britta Knudson (JR/Bismarck, N.D.) had eight kills and hit .438, while Ellie Michaletz (SO/Aitkin, Minn.) added six. Isabel Wedell (JR/Ellendale, N.D.) and Corina Ruud (SO/Breezy Point, Minn.) each finished with five, and Ruud hit a team-high .500 for the match.
*Miranda Lowman (JR/Mandan, N.D.) passed out 16 assists and racked up nine digs. Jackie Meiklejohn (FR/Dickey, N.D.) chipped in with 10 assists.
*Julina Niemeier (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) had a match-high 20 digs, her 16th match of the season with 20+ digs.
*Knudson had four block assists and Jordan Thomas (JR/Pingree, N.D.) three.

FOR HASKELL
*Alliyah Richards and Cailey Lujan had eight kills each.
*Amber Whitehair recorded 19 assists, and Sophia Honahni had 18 digs.
*Haskell hit .059 overall, with 24 kills and 18 attack errors in 102 attempts.

*On Sunday, Jamestown will find out its pool play assignments for the 2018 NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship presented by Delta Hotels. The assignments will be announced.
