Minot (uj.edu) The University of Jamestown and Minot State University hockey teams added two more chapters to their rivalry Friday and Saturday, with the Beavers sweeping the weekend series 2-0 and 4-1.
Friday night in Minot, the teams remained scoreless for nearly 52 minutes before Shain Scheschuk broke the tie with a goal at 11:33 of the third period.
Down a goal with time running out, Jamestown pulled goaltender Tyson Brouwer (JR/Lethbridge, Alberta) in favor of an extra attacker, but the Beavers tacked on an empty-net goal by Austin Kilian with 34 seconds left to seal the victory.
Brouwer had 41 saves in the loss. Minot State was 0 of 4 on the power play while the Jimmies were 0 for 2.
The teams met in Jamestown Saturday night, with the visitors taking a 3-0 lead after two periods at Wilson Arena.
Scheschuk found the back of the net for the second straight night, making it 1-0 at 5:35 of the first. Dylan Johnson made it 2-0 with a tally just under five minutes later.
Connor Navrot had the only goal of the second period, a power-play tally at 8:54 that increased Minot State’s lead to 3-0.
A minute and 30 seconds into the third was all the time Jamestown needed to get on the board. Trevor Okino (JR/Richmond, British Columbia)’s power play goal from Jason Richter (JR/Cranbrook, British Columbia) made it a two-goal deficit, and the score stayed 3-1 until another power play goal, this time by Justin Metcalf, made it 4-1.
Brouwer had 32 saves in the loss. Breyden Effertz stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced for the Beavers.
Minot State was 2 of 8 on the power play and the Jimmies were 1 of 4.
Jamestown, now 8-9-0-1 on the year, will to travel to Bismarck, N.D., on Thursday, December 13 for their first-ever meeting against University of Mary.
