CRETE, Neb. (uj.edu) — The University of Jamestown baseball team defeated Doane (Neb.) 10-8 in 10 innings Saturday afternoon, marking the 10th straight season the Jimmies have won 30 or more games.
In the nightcap, Doane rallied for a 4-3 victory to get the split. The two teams will conclude the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
With a win on Sunday, UJ will clinch the second seed and would host one of the two four-team postseason tournament brackets.
Game 1: Jimmies 10, Tigers 8 (10 innings)
Back-to-back Doane errors to begin the tenth inning proved to be beneficial for UJ, as Tanner Roundy (SR/Henderson, NV) and Drake Pilat (SR/Winnipeg, MB, Canada) followed with run-scoring singles to put Jamestown ahead 9-7 with no outs.
The Jimmies added their third run of the inning as Roundy came home on a double play.
Doane plated one run in the bottom of the inning but Aaron Pugh (JR/Boissevain, MB, Canada) was able to record a strikeout and a fly out to end the rally and earn his first career save.
Joe Harris (SO/Recluse, WY) (5-1) pitched three innings, giving up two runs on five hits for the win.
Grant Okawa (JR/Mississauga, ON) doubled for one of his three hits and also drove in a pair of runs. Jaden Yackley (SR/Lynnwood, Wash.) had two hits, scored four runs and swiped three bases. Roundy reached base four times, drove in three runs, and stole two bases, setting a new Jimmie single-season record of 34 steals. Zach Zurbrugg (SR/Bremerton, WA) also had a multiple-hit game for Jamestown, which ended with 15 total hits.
Game 2: Tigers 4, Jimmies 3
Doane scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 3-2 deficit and held on for a 4-3 win in Saturday’s second game.
Dirk Eymundson (FR/Parkland County, AB, Canada) and Jared Bentley (JR/Washougal, WA) drove in runs for Jamestown in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Eymundson made it 3-0 an inning later with a single that scored Matt Meraz (JR/Aurora, CO).
